I wish there was a licensing deal with Jim Oldaker so this model could have been released as Rollin' Thunder. Much like Kyosho did with Everett Jasmer and USA-1.
Bought a Lunchbox back in 92 after getting my first job and I just took it out of storage and replaced the old speed controller with an electronic one. Love the video, I forgot how much fun it was putting together.
The energy you emit is contagious and reminds me of all the fun and learning experiences I had as a kid growing up uniting with other kids building and enjoying the fantastic world of RC electric and IC cars. Grass hoper 2,Vanessa's Lunch box, thunder cat, mardave maruder, carson, traxxis. I still have most of them as an adult! As a dyslexic child it helped me to explore a world out side of a system that didn't acknowledge my gift to be different. Rc kit cars helped occupy my inquisitive and curious mind. I drive my parents mad by taking things apart to understand how they worked and RC kits cars were one of their solutions. An education through fun is the best and most natural way to learn… Have fun and Keep smiling :0)
Thank you for this video. I just bought my first and when I was kid same thing. So all these years later I found Tamiya by accident and had to buy the Lunch Box. A kid at church let me try his for few minutes back in the 80s and I knew some day I had to have one. So thankful for Tamiya. I will buy other cars too now lol. I can’t believe you got the same 1060 ESC I bought extra too. Very helpful video.
Hey I'm happy I watch this vid and get my first rc car lunchbox and start my big great rc journey. 4 years later UA-cam recommend this vid to me AGAIN!!!! It brings alot good memories:-D So thank you my friend
This is one I would have been excited to get in Middle school but never did. The teacher from my middle school did set up a race and someone did have one of these. All I had was a 1/16th scale Radio Shack Porsche that ran off 4 C-cells.and did not have digital proportional steering. But later in life someone gave me one of the cars I would have loved to have had back then!
I never owned this kit because as the chap in this video said back in 1987 these kits were not cheap and it was not something I felt comfortable asking my parents for. These RC cars were nonetheless a big part of my childhood. My friend Craig was lucky to have this kit as well as others like the Midnight Pumpkin and the Hornet. I would go around to his house and play with them. We had such great fun tinkering with them. It was such a memorable part of my childhood. It is hard to believe that this was thirty years ago! I was in the toy shop the other day and saw this kit on the top shelf along with the Monster Beetle. It brought back all those memories. Good times.
this reminds me of the tamiya rc kits I built and raced in my youth .....the vw beetle "sand scorcher", the "grasshopper" buggy, the "wild one" and the lancia delta integrale. good memories . great video, have fun with your new monster truck ;)
+Robert voss I remember those RC cars from Tamiya. Those are truly a blast from the past. Oddly enough, those kits has been re-released too. You can buy them and enjoy the good memories again :)
My son is obsessed with RC cars right now and so am I. I had quite a few as a kid and was into them til I got into real cars. My favorite of my childhood was my Tamiya qd midnight pumpkin. Their entry level hobby grade rtr monster truck. We’ve been restoring old radio shack versions of the original pumpkin and I finally acquired another qd midnight pumpkin. We are in the process of reviving it now on our UA-cam channel. Iowa Budget RC Bashers. Great video man, I subscribed
Thank you so much for this vid! I kept having transmission problems and from this video figured I had missed the little sleeve that goes over one axle shaft. 1000 thanks and great video!!
I want one so bad. I was also a kid in the 80’s looking through tamiya catalog lusting after the Lunchbox. I don’t trust myself to put it together tho.
It's a hobby. I'm assuming you're as old as I am. I'm only speaking for myself, but reliving a part of my life that I couldn't before was a wonderful, heathy experience. I would encourage you to build this kit if it makes you happy. I don't know you but I want wish you and your family the best. Take care.
Very well presented and well explained film . I love the tamiya rc kits . I had the pleasure assembling and owning the Monster beetle kit years ago . I had hours of fun racing this model . I once had an incident when I accidentally drove it into a lake , and thought that was it , game over lol . But because of the huge air tyres it stayed afloat and other than a bit of drying out in the sun , I was lucky there was no damage and the beetle lived on . Thanks to you , Iam now inspired to go out and buy another . Thank you again . Nigel in the uk 😊👍🏼
+nigel hammond You're welcome Nigel. The Monster Beetle is one of those cars I always wanted. I might build it in the future. My gosh playing with it in the water must have been fun. There's a video of a Tamiya Monster Beetle going through mud and water as you described. You may want to watch it, I'm sure it will bring back some fun memories ua-cam.com/video/GBL__MtKjPw/v-deo.html Take care and have a great day! :)
My first RC back in 1988. Back then we had a mechanical speed controller and even flimsier parts -- I remember those rods that went from the steering servo to the wheels were metal and very thin and would bend all the time.
Well that´s something different to what you´ve got us used to. Great build, the way you explain the whole process makes it very easy to follow and understand....cheers....
good old tamya RCs... I raced them as i was a kid...good old times. 30 years ago here in Hungary you can not buy a ready to race RC, you have to build it. I like your videos QDC!
+BladeRicsi Thank you :) You can relive some of your good times from yesteryear. Tamiya has re-released a lot of the classic RC that you probably played it. Visit Tamiya website at www.tamiyausa.com/ for more information. Take care and have a great day! :)
These old kits are addictive lol Just bought and built a Tamiya Grasshopper for my Son (my first RC) and a hot shot for me. And then found a deal on a 2011 Avante which I just couldn't say no to and am now in the final stages of that build. Great job by the way. Seems cruel to use them lol
This was a project for my son and I. What a nightmare... until I found your video. Showing us how these things fit together before hand now the instructions are clear lol. I just wish the screws would have been one bag per number, I used to assemble furniture and only one company did that. They were the first ones on the showroom floor 😀.
You did a great job on painting it! This was the first rc car I ever had it was passed down to me from my older brother, I’m going to have to purchase one of these before they disappear for good.
Now, this is a bit unusual.. but a great fun looking car! And yes, I agree.. I think your parents did a good choice back in the day.. They also say that patience is a virtue, and you waited a good few years, patiently, until it was re-released and you could buy it.. and a well deserved treat it was to, no doubt! The best bit is that you probably did a slightly better job of it NOW, than you would have done back then as well, so in the end it was a true win-win situation.. :) That model ended up a piece of art, and a great working model too.. :) Have fun driving.. :)
+Rob BasicModelling Thanks. My parents are wise. Instead of just saying no, they decided to make it an educational experience about priorities in life. This kit is so much fun to build and play with! For the last two weeks on the weekends, I would play with it in my back yard for 30 minutes. It's loads of fun. Thanks for your reply Rob! :)
My tip is to place the decals before, and spray the clear coat after. This really helps keep the graphics sealed when the model takes a tumble! Then again, I beat the stink out of my models....
Oh, My Goodness! We missed you. Glad to have you back, Maestro. Landed back in Boston this morning after 4 weeks on a medical mission to Cotonou, Benin, a small, French speaking country, in West Africa. Beautiful land, amazing, warm people, but no hobby shops over there, hehehe... Whatta nice surprise you gave us. I remember this kit. Almost bought it myself but I decided to go for The Grasshopper, instead. Remember that? Love what you did with this RC model. Nice paint job and overall assembly, very clean. Great job, as usual. To me, the gearbox was the hardest part. You are branching out your skills. I think it's wonderful to be versatile. Nice choice. Congrats! Once again, Welcome back, Maestro. Your friend, Lou. PS: in case you wonder what happened to my Grasshopper? It's somewhere at the bottom of The Charles River with a couple of my RC planes. Not my fault, I swear, hehehe. All my best Maestro. Peace.
+lunganox Welcome back to the USA. I'm assuming that you went there for humanitarian reasons. If my assumption is right, then you are a very an admirable person. Cool :) Yes, I remember the Grasshopper very well. My childhood friend had one and I used to remember being envious of him having that cool RC buggy. I might build that one of these days. The Grasshopper has been re-released. You can build one again if you like. For more info you can visit Tamiya's website www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58346. Always a pleasure to talk to you. Peace and God bless. Your friend, Lou. (kadre@msn.com)
+lunganox HI, Maestro. Hope all is well with and yours (and your cat, of course). Guess what? Got the Grasshopper today from my local hobby shop and a 2 channel radio to go with it. Didn't get any upgrades. Told you I would let you know about the purchase. Maybe, this time, the gearbox won't be so intimidating, hehehe... DILEMMA: should I continue my hardly started resin 1:35, Ford T, 1916, Vickers Gun Carrier kit or shelf it for now and start working on the Grasshopper instead? Gotta call Dr. Phil. I'm going crazy here, hehehe... Thanks for sharing your work with us. All my best to you and yours. Take care, Buddy. Peace. Lou.
+qdc748a Hi, Maestro. Always nice to hear from you. Thanks. Yes, here I go again. This time, I promise to stay away from the river, hehehe... Happy Easter to you and yours . Take care, Everybody. Your friend Lou (kadre@msn.com)
Thank you for your kind words. This hobby is meant for all ages so you are never late in the game. My primary hobby is to build static model kits but there are a lot of RC videos on UA-cam I'm sure that will inspire you. Take care. 😃😃
Great job with build! I've always been a fan of Tamiya. My first kit was a Super G Grasshopper 2 and I loved it. I just ordered the lunchbox kit for me and my 10 year old daughter to build. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did the Grasshopper.
Fantastic vid, very interesting and makes me think even I could build one. Like you, I wanted one when I was younger (late 80’s)and now I just think I could build it. Thanks again.
Great video and you have made a fantastic job on the paint, i am 45 years old and this is still my favourite RC model ...and i never owned it(yet) i did have the monster beetle many years ago and also the midnight pumpkin truck. Happy new year to you.
Thank you. It's cool to know you like this video. If you can afford it, you might want to buy this kit and build it yourself. It brought back so many good memories for me when I built it and I never regret doing it. COVID-19 is everywhere so I want to wish you and your family safe from COVID-19 and have a happy new year! Take care.
+webslinger67 Thanks. It was a fun kit to build and play. It brought back a lot of good memories when I was a kid. I hope your Associated RC10 build will be as fun as my build :) Take care :)
Amazing video, I greatly appreciate people like you who don't just care about performance, but truly enjoy a classic like this. Also, your video was very informative. It's a thumbs up from me!
Fantastic build! I didn't even know Tamiya offered anything like that. They are an awesome model making company though. I've built many Tamiya kits and their attention to detail is second to none. I bet it felt real good to finally get this one! And to take a break from regular models. I built Revel's V8 engine model years ago and it was a neat detour away from normal stuff. As always, a pleasure to watch you build. I'm about to give you some feedback. The only thing that disappoints me about your videos is the part where you say, "This completes this model project." That's when I know the joy is over for today and I'm going to have to wait until we see you next time. :D And until next time, thank you and take care!!!
I always wanted a Hornet, so I got one. Then a King Blackfoot, an Avante, Boomerang (ie a Hotshot reissue), a Unimog, another King Blackfoot for spares cause I was jumping pretty high and long then a newer DB01 Baldre kit for something not so retro and higher performance. These Tamiya RC kits are highly addictive and lots of fun to build and run. I agree it's best to get the ball bearing upgrades. Enjoy your Lunchbox qdc!
Thanks qdc. You do good things for modelers. Doesn't matter what you do...do it for enjoyment always and you don't have to be expert. Great philosophy and that's why I've subed your channel and watch your vids. Cheers.
+Matteo's RC Movies Thank you Matteo :) You inspired me to build this kit :) Without your videos, I would never be interested in this project. Take care and have a wonderful day!
I can't say I was ever expecting you to build an RC, but I quite liked watching it, and it seemed you had fun at it too. They can be a bit pricier than static kits, but I think you should tackle a couple more! And my suggestions? King Kong RC CA-10 Kyosho Scorpion XXL As always, thanks for the awesome content!
+Mekhanic1 It was really fun reliving my past a little. If you have an urge to build this kit, I highly recommend you do if you can afford it. Take care :)
I remember the lunch box when it first came out, I liked it the first time I laid eyes on it. I noticed you didn't use Lube on any of the transmission parts?
awesome video man. The parent's story sounds similar to mine. Always wanted one of these as well as a hilux growing up, might have to get both in my near future! Truly inspiring video. !
Merci de nous avoir proposé le montage de A à Z. Ça me rassure, je vais me mettre sur le mien maintenant : pajero CC-01. Mais j'ai envie de tester aussi un CW-01 !
Decals, not stickers but hey, i'm a stickler lol.. also make sure you grease all the gearbox components well before sliding them together. Love my Lunchbox. Great buggy.
Hi. I bought this set a few days ago. Can you tell me the aftermarket bearings size and the power of the servo ? Btw its a great video about this bad boy . Thank you very much .
Beautiful looking love it 👍🏼 question? Did you put grease on the gears or just decided not to show that to save Time, because it looks like you put the gear box together dry?
I remember getting this for Christmas in 1989. It was hell putting this thing together!
I wish there was a licensing deal with Jim Oldaker so this model could have been released as Rollin' Thunder. Much like Kyosho did with Everett Jasmer and USA-1.

What a nice guy 👍 reliving his youth
Thanks! If you like watching me reliving my youth, watch my latest video. I made a video of my building an old Airfix Mirage IIIC from 1965!
Ok. From your "opening" smile, I can tell this is one of your favorites.

You know that you can buy a Super Clod Buster now?
I had the Midnight Pumpkin back in the late 80's, but wanted the Lunch Box too. Now I must buy one!
This was a fun kit to build. I remember the Midnight Pumpkin 😂. Take care
@@qdc748a have you built anymore rc cars Since the Lunch Box?
@@JeepsCafe no, I haven't. I might build one sometime this year 😁
By this measure, it should only take 5-10 MINUTES to make one fully ready to run!... if the body comes molded in the correct color.

You are welcome 😊
Awesome job QDC. Loved the theme music and split screen. Lol. Fantastic.
+Mike Trentadue You're welcome. This was a fun project to both build and especially play with. Take care :)
Badass! The groovy music at the end was awesome! It came out perfect!
+Jorge Mateos Thanks!
Great video man. My 6 yr old will get his for his birthday in the morning.
I think I'm more excited than him. I've always wanted one.
I'm glad you like it. Take care.
Great vid! Like everyone already said your enjoyment from making this kit really shows.
I legit have been watchin yuh channel fo 8 years😭
This brings back very happy memories, how wanted that along with hornet and monster beetle. Great days. Great video👍
How nice to see you again , we missed you, and I'm surprised that you didn't build a tank or even a plane, It was a wondrous kit... :)
+Oguz Can Gokce Thanks. I had to build it.
Take care.
Omg . I had one of theses when it first came out. Great build again.
I do a bunch of RC builds, going to do the Associated RC 10 again. You picked some good aftermarket parts , that thing should be fun.
+webslinger67 Thanks. It was a fun kit to build and play. It brought back a lot of good memories when I was a kid. I hope your Associated RC10 build will be as fun as my build :) Take care :)
paint the body with A-TEAM scheme & you'd be my hero 🤗 great video dude; explaining, doing, start to finish
I remember when these came out, great job on the build!
Amazing video, I greatly appreciate people like you who don't just care about performance, but truly enjoy a classic like this. Also, your video was very informative. It's a thumbs up from me!
I saw this in my local store when I was a kid, what a classic.
+Hayden Young Yes, it's a classic alright. Lots of fun too.
+qdc748a worth the wait id say, have fun ;)
Really fantastic. Happy memories. I’m so on this. A great video. Thank you 👏👏👏
You are so welcome!😀
Absolutely wonderful video - thank you
Fantastic build!
+Damon Bruce Cute. Yes, this was a fun kit to build and it's a blast to play with something I never had a chance to when I was a kid. Take care :)
I like the kit too. great looking build.
+modar Cool. Maybe you should build it too.
Your fantastic at building models
the thing screams 80's! this was a great video, and I thought the pink panther was different, cheers
+Mad Cow Rebel Thanks. It was a fun kit to build and play.
Great job the van looks great and fun I want to get one of these as well thanks for posting have a great day
Thanks for your kind words 😀
Thank you for a nice video. I hope some day I can build a car like that or similar. Take care.🙂
Thank you for watching this older video.
i had one as a kid and still remember it as a classic
I always wanted a Hornet, so I got one. Then a King Blackfoot, an Avante, Boomerang (ie a Hotshot reissue), a Unimog, another King Blackfoot for spares cause I was jumping pretty high and long then a newer DB01 Baldre kit for something not so retro and higher performance. These Tamiya RC kits are highly addictive and lots of fun to build and run. I agree it's best to get the ball bearing upgrades. Enjoy your Lunchbox qdc!
+Angus Allott It sounds like you are a big fan of Tamiya RC. Cool. I'm enjoying this little van a lot. It's fun!
Thanks qdc. You do good things for modelers. Doesn't matter what you do...do it for enjoyment always and you don't have to be expert. Great philosophy and that's why I've subed your channel and watch your vids. Cheers.
Oh and I got lots of those Tamiya RC kits cheap from Hong Kong. Helps of you live close by....
This is great. Your happiness about this kit really rubs off. Thanks for posting your video's, I really enjoy watching them. Have a great day ;-)
+B. Stuurder You're welcome :). I'm glad you like them :)
Cool! Inspired me to finish my Bigfoot Monster truck model.
+Anthony Velasquez Cool :)
qdc748a Thanks!
You did a nice built with this Lunch Box!
+Matteo's RC Movies Thank you Matteo :) You inspired me to build this kit :) Without your videos, I would never be interested in this project. Take care and have a wonderful day!
I'm thinking of getting this for my son for xmas
I can't say I was ever expecting you to build an RC, but I quite liked watching it, and it seemed you had fun at it too. They can be a bit pricier than static kits, but I think you should tackle a couple more! And my suggestions?
King Kong RC CA-10
Kyosho Scorpion XXL
As always, thanks for the awesome content!
Great! We grew up with this stuff too!
+Mekhanic1 It was really fun reliving my past a little. If you have an urge to build this kit, I highly recommend you do if you can afford it. Take care :)
nice kit qdc looks like fun to drive!
good luck on next kit
+iTzDeV Thanks. It was a lot fun.
Lunchbox was my first rc I loved it and to this day even though it's long gone it was one of the most fun rc cars I ever had.
I remember the lunch box when it first came out, I liked it the first time I laid eyes on it. I noticed you didn't use Lube on any of the transmission parts?
I have no idea. Sorry.
Makes me want to go out and buy a RC car. Sweet vid!
+xxPokey19xx Cool :) Go for it if you can afford it. Take care.
I had one of those in it's first run. It was so much fun driving it.
Thank you very much. Same here with me, didn't get it when I was 12, bought it myself at 42! Black edition by the way.
Great video well documented
awesome video man. The parent's story sounds similar to mine. Always wanted one of these as well as a hilux growing up, might have to get both in my near future! Truly inspiring video. !
Fun video i just bought this model the lunch box is the best👍👍💣
Merci de nous avoir proposé le montage de A à Z.
Ça me rassure, je vais me mettre sur le mien maintenant : pajero CC-01.
Mais j'ai envie de tester aussi un CW-01 !
I'm thinking about getting one of these or a Grasshopper for my nephew.
Great video as always!
BUY him a Lunchbox. And don't forgot ball bearings
Just remember, this car is so much fun when you upgrade the shocks and put the fifth shock in! It really helps with handling.
About a million years ago :P Enjoyed the video, QDC :)
+AtomPilz Fresser I'm old :)
qdc748a Damn... The 80s... Best music!
great build as always 10/10
+Gage Heasley Thank you :)
Decals, not stickers but hey, i'm a stickler lol.. also make sure you grease all the gearbox components well before sliding them together. Love my Lunchbox. Great buggy.
Nice build :-) Thumbs up for the Lunch Box and thumbs up for you.
Hi. I bought this set a few days ago. Can you tell me the aftermarket bearings size and the power of the servo ?
Btw its a great video about this bad boy .
Thank you very much .
Sorry. I built this so long ago that I forgot. Good luck with your build. This was a very fun kit.
@@qdc748a no problem . I'm sure it will.
Beautiful Looking Monster RC
nice one qdc a lot different to our normal stull looks great
+boltuss2006 Thanks. I'm a static model guy but I had to build this kit when I saw it. It brought back many good memories.
+qdc748a your a superb modeller I wish I had 1000th of your talent really enjoy seeing your work and memories are good
Beautiful looking love it 👍🏼 question? Did you put grease on the gears or just decided not to show that to save Time, because it looks like you put the gear box together dry?
It’s been years since I built this kit. I don’t remember now. Sorry. But thank you watching this older video.
Awesome video man, one of the best RC cars ever to come out. Loved it!
Nice vid, Colin. A refresh in your bench. Great work, my friend.
+Jose Daniel Masster_Ozymandias Thanks
