In case you all forgot, the Fire Nation citizen that discovered the info in the library was none other then Admiral Zhao. He even mentioned the library near BOOK 1's finale.
"You think you are the first person to believe your war was justified?"
Such a powerful line, and the fact it came from a show originally aimed at kids is just mind-blowing!!!
"Man, you can say that about Vietnam but you can't say that about world War 2, and you definitely can't say that about us just defending against guys that wanna genocide everybody and scorch the earth"
That is a powerful line
we get it. you saw that tumblr post too
@@patrickmaybe2197I mean no one needed Tumblr to come to that conclusion
@@patrickmaybe2197 people still use tumblr?
Wan👏Shi👏Tong👏did👏nothing👏 wrong.
He clearly laid out the terms of their visit to HIS home. They lied and abused that. Doesn't matter what their intent was.
Well, he belittled Sokka and his offering, although Sokka was right that a knot should count as knowledge. Outside of that though, I'd agree.
@@craigpayne3265 Well he did accept the Knot so clearly he counted it as knowledge.
@@craigpayne3265 He accepted a frickin wanted-poster.
They were also right to lie. I’d lie to an owl to get a one up on Hitler.
@@jacksonhodge4638sometimes neither side is wrong but disagreements can happen anyway
Let me just remind you exactly what Toph's doing when the library started to sink:
She's holding up the entire buried structure by the tip, while both keeping it intact AND while Wan Shi Tong is pulling it back into the spirit world.
And that's all while she's at a huge disadvantage, because of the sand.
I bet an older more experienced Toph would totally handle that Whole Tower/ castle a little easier.
@@rollyro71for sure. Towards the end of season 3, Toph mentions she's been practicing her sandbending, then proceeds to form a perfect replication of the entire Ba Sing Se in an instant. She taught herself sandbending to an exact precision in the time span of like maybe a month or two max, likely less with everything else going on at the time. Even if you put end-of-show Toph back into that situation, I get she could still hold the library up long enough for everyone to get out, and also hit the sandbenders hard enough to save Appa
Also notice, that when toph let go of the library to fight. It start sinking hell fast. So yeah, she was making a big difference
From Wan Shi Tong's perspective, the reasons for war doesn't really matter. As he explained, everyone always thinks they are justified and the "enemy" is evil. Consider this made up scenario (none of this is canon), they defeat the fire nation, and the world is peaceful. However, fire nation are viewed as second class citizens and mistreated by the general public. A new war breaks out and now the fire nation goes to the library trying to explain how they're mistreated and they're only trying to get their basic human rights back. Wan Shi Tong is ancient, he's probably heard it all and seen it all. We can't just go "but the fire nation are the bad guys" and expect him to just agree.
It’s the simple “one mans terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”
very nuanced take.
Sounds like how WW1 ended and WW2 started
very true. as long as humans are alive, there will always be fighting and battles, with one side trying to justify why they’re the ones that are right
@@parmisiguess But Wan Shi Tong allowed past experiences to cloud his judgment, and this is wrong
One thing to make note of is that most animals in the show are hybrids, but all of the spirits you meet so far are singular species. A panda, two koi fish, a monkey, a GIANT wolf, a massive centipede (granted, with many other faces), foxes, an owl. I personally think it's meant to represent that the spirit world is a world of ideals (pure expressions of what they are), and that the physical world is a world where very little is ideal, but everything is still special.
Could that be why Sokka wondered what kind of animal the fox was?
That's why Bosco the Bear is the true King of Ba Sing Se
The musical groundhogs were not hybrids. He didn't ask what that was then.
Interestingly enough, non-hybrid animals were occasionally seen or mentioned in season 1.
Wan shi tong was voiced by Hector Elizondo, he played in the princess Diaries as Joe the bodyguard
7:25
Yeah, that was a super impressive call by Arianna. Picking out voice actors is no mean feat, especially if they're not among the most famous and quirky actors.
Wan Shi Tong literally translates to "He who knows ten thousand things".
That is the direct translation, but the phrase in Chinese is more colloquially translated as "Mister Know-It-All", matching the somewhat arrogant personality of the Owl Spirit.
It definitely doesn't help that they promised they wouldn't try to get an upper hand against other ppl then immediately betray that promise. The owl spirit was already weary of humans but gave them a chance to prove him wrong. They betrayed the chance he gave them. Doesn't really matter if their reason is good or not. They solidified his view that humans are untrustworthy.
Big thing I'd say is the spirits don't care about the affairs between humans because we always do the same thing. They are eternal enough to say this is just them doing human stuff all over again.
i forget how good this show is at foreshadowing
Talking about the Lion turtles?
@@Skeletongentleman7808 Also the libray Zhao had mentioned before.
@@aneffortlesssmileDon’t forget 2 episodes before this one, when Appa saves Sokka and Katara from Mai and Ty Lee, and Sokka says, “Don’t know what we’d do without you.”
The professor character is given some genuine depth with limited screen time
5:42 Wan Shi Tong is one of those things I don't want to encounter face to face, his design is scary in so many levels
10:39 let's just take a moment to appreciate how awesome Toph is: holding the library from dimensional travel
Appa is Aangs oldest friend, the only living connection to his people. The only connection to his life. Well, except Bumi. But even Bumi is 100 years older now.
Something interesting about the sand benders is when they used the sand on their feet to anchor themselves is similar to what katara did when she froze her legs to the ground in episode 18 of the first season
I haven't watched the video yet, i'll watch It tomorrow (2am i'm sleepy) but do you remember when Commander Zhao said "i have found the real form of the Moon and Ocean Spirit in a library in the earth Kingdom"? Well this is the library.
this episode scarred me as a child and it still hurts as an adult ;( poor appa
it is the driver from princess diaries, nailed it.
This library was brought over from the Spirit World thousands of years ago.
The Spirit World exists alongside the physical world, but only certain people can see the Spirit World.
This show has good animal representation
Goddamn owls.
LMFAOO
that lion turtle sure looks crazy
indeed almost looks godly
The Si Wong Desert has the hottest, driest climate of anywhere in the Avatar world.
It literally means "Desert of the Dead".
That sounds like a Zombie Movie.
@@fireball1249 it'll be "Dessert of the dead"
Wan Shi Tong is voiced by Hector Elizondo.
And thus, the arc of tears begins...
Omg! This one is a banger. That owl was scary af first time I saw it lol.
So cute that you two have your Appas while watching AtLA episodes! 😊❤❤❤❤😊
The driver from The Princess Diaries, Hector Elizondo, is in fact the voice of Wan Shi Tong!
We are getting to some of the most intense episodes. I already feel tears coming.
I guess it's just me who gets a laugh out of Toph's "yall always forgetting I'm blind" jokes. This episode had 2 great ones. No reaction.
This and the next few episodes get really good!
Knowledge Seekers are also great library assistants, searching the world for information that they bring back to the library.
I'm so ready for the Cactus Juice episode 😂
@@VoidVintagemushy giant friennnnnd!
The Knowledge Seekers are roughly designed after Sophie, one of the Avatar staffer's dogs.
the beginning of the SUFFERING--
The "Misty Palms Oasis" is a cantina built atop an underground iceberg.
3:51 Yeah, I definitely didn’t hear “vibe reader” the first time I heard this.
Now thinking about it. If sokka hadn’t come back for the eclipse information aang could of stopped them from stealing appa. Especially seeing that their plan to to work the fire ended during the full moon didn’t even work anyway. So in a way you can blame sokka for everything that’s happened.
You are very right about the voice of Wan Shi Tong, it is Hector Elizondo from princess diaries 💯😌👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Great call Arianna the spirit is voiced by Hector Elizondo of many great movies but yes Princess Diaries as well!
You didn't recognize Zhao? He was the firebender, Zhao himself mentioned this very library to Iroh at the end of book one.
The katana-wielding bartender makes some of the best frozen beverages this side of the Earth Kingdom.
The ice is cut fresh off the iceberg every morning.
Wan Shi Tong is such a great character.
I always laugh at the fact that even though she was in the place where all knowledge was stored, Katara started digging up for information about Aang’s past. 😂
LOL love hearing ol' Raphael Sbarge voicing the scholar. Can't unhear Carth/Kaiden.
Wish he did more voice work. He perhaps lacks range - but he makes up for it with a great sounding voice.
This is one of my favorite episodes. So much i can talk about from it.
Both sides of a war have a viewpoint. I know it may seem really crazy...but Hitler didn't see himself as the bad guy. He saw himself as the leader Germany needed to recover from WWI. So in his mind he is probably just trying to do the "hard thing" that no one else will do but for the "greater good" type deal.
Same can be said for any war really. Greater good and good are subjective. The owl spirit is not interested in bloodshed, no matter the reason. He created the library so humans could be better. And war isn't being better. It is more of the same.
"Time to start excavating." *pulls out a trowel* 😆😆😆
The burnt parchment reads:
The date of the darkest day in Fire Nation history is the 19th day, of the 7th month of the cultivate rule dragon year.
According to the chart, the solar eclipse is on the 1st day of the 8th month of the superior military monkey year.
@6:48 @Arianna You're thinking of Hector Elizondo.
Me without looking: it's Hector Elizondo. I'm just a fucking dork and he's been in a million things. Unmistakable voice. Not to mention the archaeologist is Raphael Sbarge who was everyone's least favorite crew member in Mass Effect and Carth Onasi in KOTOR.
My second favourite creature from the show! Respected The Librarian owl dude!
Yes! Us lefties are special!
OOOO THE UPCOMING EPISODE they’re my favorite to watch other reactors react to.
Just pay attention to aang ok. That’s all I will say
Aang showing Katara a picture of the lion turtle ❤
Aang knows about the prairie groundhogs from when he traveled the world over a hundred years ago.
Sokka hit the owl with the professor's book
I know this is an older reaction, but has anybody ever looked into a supercut of all the times Ariana says ‘I hate this/that’s in this series?
It's really only the monster right? Ko, the owl, the unagi, probably the serpent

@@Diegesis most likely. I feel like it’s because they’re all so close together that’s makes it memorable. Still, fantastic content from these two on this series.
It is the driver from Princess Diary.
as a little kid i was so scared of wa shi tong
Spoilers for korra:
I wouldve loved if jinora, in an attempt to escape, had attacked wan shi tong. But he would have dodged, saying "ah, sokka style. Imoressive" implying that he did learn it.
The next episode hits so damn hard. Aang is a lot like anakin from the first 3 movies. This show does have star wars influence
Well Dave Filoni who made Clone Wars and Rebels and helped with The Mandalorian also did work on 8 episodes from Book 1.
they basically went to an immersive, real-life ephemeris simulator
Remember this professor
Remember the name of this professor because he’ll comeback later on! 😉
Am I the only one that thinks these two act like aang and sokka when they're together?
I just love watching the magic of ATLA takeover newbies
If only the oh so wise spirit had talked to the ocean and moon spirit to ask them what the last firebender did exactly with the knowledge from his library. Or the foresight to see what Sozin's comet is, what it was used for in the past, how it upset the death of many animals and races (including you-know-what kind-of-animals, sky bisons and the airbenders) and how it might be important for the BRIDGE OF THE HUMAN WORLD AND THE SPIRIT WORLD to bring back balance to the world.
Someone else said it before. He might be "he who knows 10.000 things" but actually applying any of that knowledge, he fails to do. He has all that knowledge, but fails to act on it. 100 on wisdom, intelligence 1.
By the way, you know who is supposed to be the spirit of light and peace? That's right. Raava. The spirit inside the avatar. You know, that person whose judgment you failed to recognise.
People defend Wan Shi Tong, because from a human standpoint you might think that he has a point, as human wars are endless. But Aang, the Avatar, is no ordinary human.
Besides that, I don't remember seeing Wan Shi Tong battling during the war of the North to defend the ocean and moon spirit against the human that had tried to use knowledge from his library? So you let the fire nation have their knowledge, but refuse to give that same treatment to the Avatar. That's called choosing sides. Something he claims not to do, because he refuses to let his knowledge be misused for wars. By the way, the war had already been going on for almost 100 years by the time Zhao found the library, so there's no talking "he didn't know about the fire nation" BS.
Appa 😢
Some think Professor Zei ends up in the Spirit World.
what would have happened if wan shi tong he could share his knowledge with anyone
Here... we... go..., again
Oh .... There we go again ...
Some parts of the animation here and the way the creatures are and the owl, the wolf, the voice, the stakes in the situation-is it iust me or is it giving Ghibli?
Forget everything else yal got going on. Pleeaasseee drop the next episode early 😭😭 these are the best episodes out of the season cmonn
If you think about it from a realistic point of view that guy wouldn’t live long down there.
@maple what are you drinking in this video?
Arizona Tea but the green screen is messing with the decal lol 😂 so it looks all crazy
*See's the girls holding their Appa pets* Yeah....about that...
