Excellent info as ever Paul. I heard the GH6 has a Video ‘Wind Cut’ filter as well as audio which would have come in handy on those beach shots. It works by using the powerful internal fan to counteract local weather patterns.
Now that's a good idea... we could have like a 'wind' umbrella ... brilliant. Don't tell anyone.

I need to as a question please: I shoot only in 4K in remote areas of Africa filming the daily life of indigenous people with black skin on the red ground, in Africa or South America. Which color profile could you suggest beside v-log? I mean with GH5 MKII. Thanks

I think the form factor of the S5 is the way forward for Lumix cameras regardless of sensor size. I also hope they continue with the mark “II” designations. i.e., S5 Mark II, GH5 Mark III, G9 Mark II,and GH6 Mark II and so forth and also on…
I also prefer the front dial encompassing the shutter button too, and rather the full size HDMI instead. Would also be interesting with an OLED Top Panel LCD, not that 90’s looking version on the G9, and option for CF Express cards as well…

Thanks for yet another great video funny as well as wonderful footage of the windy day. I'm content that i remain seated in boat patiently waiting, it seems to have "saved" me a lot of money, probably to spend it on the GH6 (if i feel i need to feed my GAS).

Super 16 is exactly how I saw m43 a while back. Though quality and sensor size-wise I wonder if it isn't nearer the Technoscope 2-perf format (ignoring actual aspect ratio) used for all the old spaghetti westerns. And apparently, Leone wished he could get as much depth of field as possible.
Maybe deep DoF will return as the new trend soon?

I've just watched (and enjoyed) your stream on the GH6... love the picture quality you get and your honesty... I feel your pain !!! I know what you mean about the GH6S, but what if the GH6 is good in low light? Wouldn't you rather have that with class leading IBIS? The 5.7K at 60P tease might give us an indication of the total resolution on the GH6 which could indicate that it might be better in low light than the GH5... I think we'll know more in September?

I have my doubts as to whether that will be possible with 24MP, but as we all now know my crystal ball needs throwing in the bin :)
I bought the GH5 Mk 2 as I have two GH5’s. I wanted something that would match my existing cameras. I have been testing the autofocus and I’m very pleased. It will get a real test today as I have a gig shooting some live theatre.

I have shot 3 documentary films while in lockdown with the GH5 & GH5s and I have never had so much success as a filmmaker. You are right, waiting for the GH6. Loved your video as always and music.

GH6 must have fantastic autofocus and raw output, minimum. Something else I've got to have is an easy to use internal timecode generator.
I just love your style of review/video presentation. You have a wonderfully mild and restful presentation style, dry humour, and a good sense for music. You really ought to have more subs.
And I think you're right on about m43 for documentary work. I've been using GH cameras for docs since 2012, and the greater depth of field and therefore ease of focus is so useful in the world of documentary. Even though you can't get the hair-thin depth of field of f1.4 lenses on full frame, you get depth of field which is shallow enough for subject separation. An Olympus f1.2 lens will give you all the subject separation you want for documentary. Not to mention, m43 lenses are just so much smaller and lighter. You can put a GH5, Panasonic 12-35, 35-100 and a couple of Olympus primes in a shoulder bag that is way under the airline carry on limit. You can't get that focal length range with full frame at the same weight.
I'm all on board for the GH6. 4K 100p at 10bit is going to be insane, and I've already got all the lenses I need.

Your summation Paul is spot on! I personally, as a GH5 owner shall skip the version II and eagerly await the release of the GH6. I have to laugh when many You-tubers get so wound up about sensor sizes because the extremely expensive equipment I use in my job as a live sports broadcaster is still 2/3” yet this is what most people consume when watching their favourite teams every week!😂🙏🏾
Exactly, we went for years happy thinking 2/3" was 'Pro' for TV when it's about 8mm wide !!! I know quite a few TV news guys who are using the GH5 as the 'large sensor' option for news... and it's perfect for what they do.
I heard about the PDAF (Pigeon Detect Auto Focus) system they are working on, but I know a guy that knows a guy that knows your friend and he said they blew it with the card slots, because one is slower than the other.
The Dual PDAF sounds promising?
@@extrashot it’s definitely innovative! Sounds great for wildlife photography. Although I’m not sure how functional the camera will be, if your subject eats your autofocus system. But I guess you can say that about any camera! 😂

Asking for a friend who, uh, has once or twice, uh... got out of sync starting and stopping recording while paying attention to what he was shooting and recorded moving between shots, but not the shots themselves... Do you professional camera guys have a cute term for doing this?

I can assure you... from personal experience, that professional camera guys have also got 'out of sync' with the record button. I don't know if there is a name for it.... but the editor was calling me quite a few when I did it !!! 🥵

How visible is the difference between 10 bit 4:2:0 and 4:2:2? That's may be a deciding factor for 4k shooters considering the gh6 when it comes out.
That's a good question. What we know from the S5 is that 5.9K 4:2:0 10bit downsampled to 4K, looks a lot better than straight 4K 4:2:2 10bit. Personally, I prefer bit depth to colour sub-sampling any day. I notice banding a lot quicker than colour resolution. I think it's tough to spot the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 without a colour resolution chart?

Given how focused canon and Sony are on pushing spec numbers, the gh6 might go 'out of date' sooner than panasonic expects. How can it be kept relevant?
-Built in nd, competitors are unlikely to put this into generalist photo cameras
-zcam/red/apple style double exposure hdr
-a battery grip that adds sdi and XLR
-a follow focus accessory that drives the motors in the lenses
Any one of these would excite me more, and stay relevant longer than 6k
That's a good point... plus everyone's new launches seem to be delayed by the worldwide chip shortage, which for some manufacturers just means they have more time for development. I predict things will move even faster next year!

I suspect you're right Cliff.... but the GH5II may attract a lot of new users who won't want to pay GH6 prices... and the GH5II is not a bad camera by any means!

With the new generation we proberably get The new stacked Sony sensor and quad pix autofocus system. What Will this mean to the micro four thirds system? I'm exited. /Niklas

Trouble with MFT is it seems there is not a lens that 'is provably better' (makes full use of thin flange and small sensor) than larger formats.. affordable 10-100 with zoom rocker for example.
It seems for AF testing we should divide up into 'classes' - clearly this camera fails as you dance about/leave the frame.. but my hunch is that it would stick to a face for a high quality commercial zoom presentation ? For the Zoom presentation the camera should have a setting to lock the focus in the 2-5ft range. Obviously a proffessional setting like that is beyond the nouse of any manufacturer as they never shot a job.
Indeed the costs/size/mass make a differnce in multicam/live environments. Obviously those environments have to be indoors as these people forget that minor ND niggle - a particular fail on that nice Panasonic box that I have forgotten the name of (and existence of).
Good point about the live multi camera market... and that's been growing significantly for corporate clients recently.

@@PeterVCook it does have a bunch of improvement for sure over the G7 - but the 10 mins record limit and big crop in 4K is a bit of a drag. The 20MP is good though!! I’d probably lean more toward a G85 if I could find a good price.

What did you get in the end? The more I use full frame, the more I think it's the future standard format... so maybe S5. The only problem would be if I had a large selection of M4/3rd lenses!
@@extrashot I eventually chose the S5, thanks for replying! I do sometimes miss the stabilization of the GH5 and MFT in general but what I get in low light ability seems to pay off very well for the content I shoot
Panasonic is focused. Wait, it's weird to say Panasonic focused, since they suck at focusing.... so I'll say they decided they need a camera to bring the GH5 back to the $2K price point. At the same time, since this camera exists at $2K, now they can release the GH6 at a higher price. This is the ENTIRE reason for the Mark 2. Panasonic first cannibalized the GH5 and put it into the BGH1 and they found a way to sell a GH5 for a more expensive $2,000 price without a screen or much else besides a sensor and a firmware update. They upgraded the hardware board slightly because the GH5 hardware is so old that they were forced to upgrade some of the hardware based on what is available on the market today. Now, they are putting the BGH1 firmware and barely upgraded electronics with the telltale live streaming feature straight from the BGH1 BACK into the GH5. Panasonic's innovation is targeted to cannibalize their own tech in as many ways as possible and re-establish their pricepoints. The Pigeon detect autofocus is epic and indeed is better than their existing system. If I can't afford a Sony is 2021, I am still buying a classic GH5 for $1300 on Amazon which is by far the best value.
The BGH1 is basically the GH5S inside, but it looks like there is a market for the camera brain in a small cube with no frills. There's quite a few cameras around with that form factor, and I do get it for things like corporate fixed installations, especially in this socially distanced world. You're right, I'm sure when the GH6 arrives it'll be at a premium price point, but the GH5m2 is being launched in the UK with a recommended price of £1499 ($1699)... that's also good value?

2:55 In many ways Panasonic seems to be protecting consumers from themselves. e.g. It's a different battery from the GH5 because, if you buy the GH5ii your other camera is an S5, NOT a GH5. I think they made the right battery choice for the GH5ii. No one that owns a GH5 already should really be getting the GH5ii.
true... the GH52 isn't aimed at existing users, I think it's more of a stepping stone to the GH6 for people trying M4/3rds?
I’ve been wanting a GH5 for a while and I love that Panasonic updated it with the Mark II so it was the perfect purchase for me.
I don’t need the higher resolution of the GH6 and $2,100-2,500 is out of my budget for a camera anyways.
AFAIK the recording in 10bit 4:2:2 should not be done with the h265 codec because there is still no hardware support on the PC graphics cards. It would be more or less unusable. On the other hand h265 allows to squeeze much more information into a 200mbps file than h264. So the decision to do 10bit 4:2:0 h265 seems to be best for the 4k60p.
Also, 4:2:2 has a color information for every second pixel. The bayer pattern delivers the color information on 4 pixels, so you need heavy oversampling to get enough color data for real 4:2:2. I'm not sure if 4:2:2 gives a big advantage on a 1:1 readout. It makes a lot of sense to store the 5.7k on the GH6 or the HighRes/Anamorphic of the GH5 in 4:2:0 (h265).
I'm not sure many processors are good at playing H.265 that smoothly at the moment. Given the choice, I'll always choose bit depth over colour subsampling. Give me 4:2:0 10bit over 4:2:2 8bit any day!

@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 I won't shut up about anything pal. The auto focus weakness is an issue versus Sony and Canon. Sorry but it is. It is the main reason why I went to Sony as I love Panasonic...just not their autofocus technology which is arguably the worst in the industry.
The AF is working, but unfortunately not smooth enough for real world video use. The jitter and pulsing as it finds focus make it very unnatural. I'd still go for a Sony if AF is important to you. I'll be curious to see what the GH6 will bring, but so far I've got no regrets about largely leaving the Micro 4/3 system. I've still got a GH5 but am in process of selling it and all my micro 4/3 lenses. Hopefully not too late now that the 5 ii and 6 are officially announced. 😬 My lenses might be easier to sell soon even if the body is harder to sell for a good price.

I'm sure it looks much better if you set the focus speed to slow. I do this all the time on the GH5. It moves more natural and there is much less overshoot and pulsing. I expect this to be much better on the GH6 with the much faster readout, even if they don't change anything else (which we don't know).

No, sadly the AF is still no good. Can see it pulsing in your tests, a little slow, which wouldn’t be a problem if it smoothly found focus, but you can see it jolt so… still pants and certainly unusable for video
