  • Correspondent Mark Irons speaks to a woman whose miraculous encounter with modern-day Saint Padre Pio inspired America’s National Centre for Padre Pio.
Saint Padre Pio, a Franciscan friar from southern Italy, is widely known for his supernatural/mystical gifts, including the stigmata, the wounds of Christ's crucifixion.
Padre Pio's miracles attracted people from all over the world, and he was often overwhelmed by the crowds seeking his blessings and confessions. Vera Calandra, a devout Catholic, traveled to Italy with her sick daughter, Vera Marie, seeking Padre Pio's help. Miraculously, Vera Marie was healed after Padre Pio touched her.
Inspired by Padre Pio's life and miracles, Vera Calandra dedicated her life to promoting his name and built the National Center for Padre Pio in Pennsylvania. The center serves as a place for pilgrims to learn about Padre Pio's life and miracles and to seek spiritual guidance.
Today, Saint Padre Pio is buried in at the Sanctuary of Saint Mary our Lady of Grace, San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy.
Hosted by Montse Alvarado, EWTN News In Depth welcomes guests in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith.
