I was 16yrs old and saw the Subhumans play a small venue in Dublin in 1983 they absolutley ripped the roof of the place, I was completely blown away, I knew beforehand to expect a gret gig but it was way beyond my expectations. Spoke to Dick after the gig and he was very down to earth friendly, intelligent and humourous, I met Dick a few times in the years that followed at various Culture Shock and Citizen Fish gigs etc and it must be said that the guy is still as down to earth, friendly, intelligent and humourous as he always has been. Dick Lucas is a real one off genuine decent bloke.
WTAF? - after all Dick's anti smoking songs & lyrics & here he is being interviewed - SMOKING!! - the word hypocrite springs to mind! - Subhumans are still a good band though - been listening to them & going to their gigs since the 80's.
Bollox Pig I always assumed the anti-smoking songs were as a result of Dick being addicted to cigarettes. I mean, it's not easy to quit once you're hooked; apparently it's easier to quit heroin. But lyrics like "I'm hooked on 40 fags a day," I always took as him telling it like it was at the moment of writing. I've never smoked but my sisters have and have had a hell of a time quitting, so I try not to judge people for habits they'd rather not have begun in the first place.
I agree with Jeanette about the first part, a tobacco user is more liable to despise his affliction. I know. Jeanette, I wouldn't say tobacco is harder to kick than heroin. Withdrawal from nicotine I would rate for mental discomfort at 7.5/10, physical at 1/10. Heroin withdrawal (assuming a long period of high dose use) is a 999/10 dark night (more like dark 6 months) of the soul, and physically is "beg god for mercy or drugs, whichever comes first". Tobacco is no big, especially when you are motivated. I've cold turkeyed both on multiple occasions (not bragging, just saying i'm not preaching from my armchair either). Live long and prosper. Dick's music has had a profound effect on my life, thanks Dick Lucas!
@@jeanettethomas5806 Quitting smoking is easy if you want to do it. i smoked between 30 & 40 cigarettes a day for over 30 years - i haven't smoked anything in at least 10 years now. willpower is the key ;)
@@Marc-ny6mg You're missing my point totally - ok so he cannot give up smoking- so what. The point was that he is a smoker who writes many anti smoking songs - it's hypocritical.
@@jeanettethomas5806 I've been in bands that have done very political songs but we'd put a lot of humour in them or criticise ourselves in them too as we can all do better. I think Dick does this as well for the most part. If you're just going to do dry finger pointing, preachy songs you'd better be perfect. Especially today when 'call out culture' is a blood sport.
I used to officialy film bands in the 90's d.i.y every one from GBH / Conflict / Angelic Upstarts / Eddie & the Hot Rods etc etc said Yes to me in advance no problem about filming them but when I asked Subhumans Dick wanted money up front no one else ever asked that(probably why he plays FARCE Fest in blackpool etc) love the band still but not him
