I heard the band before I saw the logo or even knew their name but once I heard them in the middle of the night on Rodney on the Roc I HAD to hear more and was punk in an instant
I'm 8 minutes into watching this vid. C'mon. It's Greg's band and everyone knows it. Yeah he fully invited not just participation from members but fight back, give-it-your-all: Black Flag was dynamic just about as all the way a group can go. Yet Ginn hasn't appeared in an interview yet, I don't think the lead guitarist's and songwriter's NAME has been mentioned. Well look at Black Flag's chronology. Do your research MOCA. Ginn's legendary for keeping "integrity" at all cost. I've heard stories of what a shit he could be. I don't much doubt it. I interviewed him at SST in '85, quiet, thoughtful, intense guy. Don't know if I'll finish this vid with its own blatant bias though.
If yer talking about Rollins, Ginn is definitely no more a saint than Henry. Neither you nor I will ever know the full reality of any band's business or (the effect of time+active/creative personalities) that we were not part of...
Morris "It was becoming more apparent that this one person in the band was almost more important than some of the other people in the band." No kidding. Greg Ginn IS Black Flag, no matter who is singing.
today i visited the museum of modern art here in salzburg, they run a big Raymond Pettibon exhibition with his original artwork. His artwork is amazing and they displayed a lot of it. They have a big wall there which is only dedicated to the Black Flag Albums, Posters, Flyers .... :-) just epic
Miles Davis. Kurt Cobain was an actual artist. From his video concepts to paintngs and sculpture. John Lennon was one too.. Alot of those brits went to art school in the early 60's
how is it greg ginn and his brother are responsible for one of the most powerful influential bands of the last half century and yet neither seem to be able to string together a coherent sentence....
Greg is a super-nice guy at shows, always hanging out before & after, surrounded with adoring fans wanting autographs & selfies, he looks really healthy & still shreds his guitar apart on stage. When he plays he looks almost possessed like he always has. I didn't want to play "Black Flag superfan" so I didn't talk to him but I hung out a few minutes nearby and, yeah, he has trouble with words like Ray and you can tell he's super-intelligent.
I love how the whole purpose of this video is "the art of punk" yet anytime there's an image of the artwork it cuts away after a nano-second, then zooms in on the image, then does some effects on the image. Can I look at the fucking image for one god damn second without having to keep my finger on the pause button?
These Art of Punk episodes are great (if only they were a little longer),hoping they're not just leaving at three episodes,it'd be great to see more,The Misfits would be cool.
After watching this again I just realized how many times Raymond Pettibone and Flea say"Like you know" a lot of freaking times to point where I just start cracking up as soon as they say it.
I find it interesting that none of these black flag docs include interviews with Greg Ginn. I don’t know if that’s because he won’t do interviews (?), but Greg Ginn IS black flag. There is no black flag without GG!
Which is why I have absolutely ZERO issues with Black Flag still being a band and touring. After all, it is Greg Ginn's band. Frank Vallely (sp?) is pretty good on stage, too. Not great, but pretty damn good.
On March 5, 1985, the Dickies were one of a number of California punk bands to play a very unexpected benefit show; other bands on the bill included the Circle Jerks, the Vandals, and D.I. The show's beneficiaries were the Cypress College Republicans.
When I was a little kid, all of the old people were like apple pie, chevrolet and ww2. now for my little kids, old people are black flag and bad religion. tattoos, motorcycles, weed ha!! when I was a kid there were no elders like these.
Raw Nerve - Hemlock no longer active, but they’re so fuckin’ good band, I think I heard another tune in the background which called ‘dating problems’ the bass player of raw nerve runs a small record label - Not Normal Tapes’ you can find some really cool stuff there :)
Watched this on another site somewhere. Couple years ago. Its a good film. I like the interviews. It sticks with the subject. Love the Rollins and Morris interviews. Keith Morris is a lovely human being. BLESS♥
Simply amazing...what else can I say. I was so influenced by Black Flag and Pettibon's art, made me want to make punk rock flyers...which I did. Wearing a Black Flag shirt in in school would get you sent to the principal's office...Looking forward to the rest of the series!!
@@jameshampton3102 OK, so I'm surely wrong. I remember Rollins telling the story of how he was on his way to or from work when Ian asked him to jump up on stage and sing, or to try out. The song was Clocked In that apparently got Henry the job. I might be butchering the story, but I believe I heard that from the documentary "American Hardcore" or I might have heard it on a Black Flag documentary. You got me wondering so I'm gonna find it tonight & I'll come back & straighten it out.
some people approach me and think my tattoo is an unimaginative cover-up, others (the cool ones), just nod or start telling me their favorite black flag story. Then there's the young who equate this with henry, and i have to educate them on the GOOD, the REAL, black flag.
The REAL Black Flag to me was Greg, Henry, Kira and Bill. I'm not young, I got to see them several times in the mid 80s. When Henry was on vocals, it took BF to a whole other original innovative sound. So your opinion is just that, just an opinion.
Great stuff...maybe don't flash past the art itself so quickly. Sure the characters, the players of the story are important...but it is about the art, so show us more than a fleeting glimpse of the art.
my name is raymond pettibon and i designed this muthafucking thang
timeless
Also I think every documentary or feature, regardless of topic, should have an interview with Flea while he's sitting on a toilet.
Thanks for your art Raymond! The art on the Black Flag fliers inspired me to draw as a kid, and the scathing commentary inspired me to think.
Greatest punk rock band ever. They are why I picked up a guitar over 30 years ago and I still play.
Henry:No more loyal a compadre to Greg.Chuck, Keith, Flea...many others as well.I love my brother more than anything.Luyv .It's not Greg's fault--it's brain chemistry--and love, love, love will be returned w/hate.His enablers, his sychophants,on the other hand...y'all get the treatment yrselves...soon.Thnx Henry,Chuck,Keith,Flea. And love to Greg, my bro.
Wow, this really is from Raymond. I'm almost speechless...Thanks for your magnificent art!
Hi, Raymond!
Yes! The band's second single 'Antisocial'. Great stuff, I'm glad you pointed that out.
this is an amazing 22 minutes.
HOLY 'PUNK'S NOT DEAD' BATMAN'!MORE OF THESE PLEASE...AND THANKU 2 ALL OF THOSE WHO BROUGHT THE TRUTH W/ THIS PUNK ROCK DOC!
I heard the band before I saw the logo or even knew their name
but once I heard them in the middle of the night on Rodney on the Roc
I HAD to hear more
and was punk in an instant
Henry wearing a King Casio, now that's fucking punk!!!!!
Dukowski is sitting there listening to Keith and thinking that doesnt sound right but maybe i feel that way too
cool, Raw Nerve as backround music
for some reason when I was younger I thought the logo tatted on henrys neck was a bar code.
Found it in a book called Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. Such a masterpiece :)
in an old interview I think Keith once said they got the name from the bug spray
FLAG FOR LIFE
rad!!!
Ray got that Heavy Meds Glassy look.
3:45 made my day
awesome. Art turns me onto sth
Black FlagじゃなくてRaw Nerve,Salvation,Cult RitualとかYouth Attackレーベルの曲ばかり挿入されてて不思議、ファンにはうれしいけど…
This is fucking amazing
Pause button works for that..you know, the button that looks like half of a black flag logo, coincidently enough..
no they wouldnt no they wouldnt...many nwould come up with two bars. great logo, man!!!!
Flea: "Let's do this interview in my bathroom, sitting on my toilet!"
que legal
What's that song at 1:17?
Rich people buy Raymond Pettibon's painting but never listen to Black Flag. They don't listen to Sonic Youth, either.
oh for sure, Hank. I was a clone of Raymond Pettibone, but I was 13.
"some dark emotional content ..." LOL
dont get me wrong. Raw Nerve is a fantastic band, but why did you choose their music instead of actual Black Flag material? some issue with SST?
what are the songs at the little cut scenes?
would have been something bigger if they had the help of the Raiders! LAPD was already on board. What could have been lol.
I think black flag the roach killer played a part too
Is there a reason why Flea is being interviewed exclusively on the toilet?
I'm 8 minutes into watching this vid. C'mon. It's Greg's band and everyone knows it. while that is true, the video is called “the ART of punk” therefore the focus is on raymond pettibon as it should be...
What was the book in the beginning of this video any one know ?
(I gave you a thumbs up)...could it be because of Greg Ginn? What happened with him? Such a shame... : (
whats the first song?
If yer talking about Rollins, Ginn is definitely no more a saint than Henry. Neither you nor I will ever know the full reality of any band's business or (the effect of time+active/creative personalities) that we were not part of...
Half of these bands , not all, wou;dn't even exist if it wasn't for Ray's artwork. Ray Pettibon is like the 5th beatle in many bands imo.
Maybe with some nice New Age music...
Morris "It was becoming more apparent that this one person in the band was almost more
important than some of the other people in the band."
No kidding. Greg Ginn IS Black Flag, no matter who is singing.
My old band was influenced a bit by Flag.We had them stay with us in 1981 when Dez was still singing
Also 14:15
why is flea doing this interview on a toilet lmao
UK Tour!!!! wtf!!
Song and 10:50?
I laughed when I saw flea sitting on a toilet
had he been standing on it, he'd have been high on pot
I'm wondering whether whose idea it was
"Probably one of the more popular tattoos besides, swastikas... or whatever"
I have the 4 bars tattooed on my bicep.
I thought the misfits skull was the number 1 band tattoo.
People who tattoo band logos on themselves are complete morons… unless you’re in the band
I have the bars and a Misfits tattoo. 😊
Or whatever🧐
pity that you couldn't use black flag music for this program.
Greg would copyright it
The music's fucking sick tho
Quick someone edit real bf tunes over the shit ones

That's so sick
This is an awesome series, The Art of Punk. Things like this are what make UA-cam worthwhile.
How many bands have come with their own totally unique brilliant art?
not many
Dead Kennedys
Other bands may have had their own little art but black flag’s was the best and heaviest.
Tons! Crass, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Stereolab, Hood, Fucked Up (as featured in the intro/outro music on this doc..)
Journey

Sometimes people are meant to communicate beyond words. Actions speak louder.
Geniuses are usually eccentrics.
People who are really deep artists have problems speaking with words. Their way is a canvas or whatever. Genius type people

@@crooked-halo he’s a twat. he took all the royalties from the rest of the band.
Kieth Morris also GTA 5 DJ

the art of rollins
It's most likely because the don't wanna risk getting sued by Greg Ginn.
use the pause?
Charles J Gartner buy a fucking art book you shit ass
Art is more than just physical
This is possibly the single fucking best thing I've found on youtube to date.
Thank you !
6 Years Later... Did ya find anything better? If so please share. Thank you.
I don't think I've EVER seen Rollins and Morris ~together~ talking about Black Flag...
Never been happier to have those bars tattooed on me.
Poser
I got the bars painted on my dirt bike on my skateboard on my truck
Soo Punk Rock.
My all-time favorite band right next to Circle Jerks.
rise above
█ █ █ █
The album covers and black flag art , its so hypnotizing...
Were you on DMT when you seen them?
take a shot every time someone says "you know?"
Hoo lee sheet
I just love how Flea is being interviewed on his toilet.
Raymond Pettibon said he never went to art school but he has a BFA?
Pettibone invented memes long before the internet came round.
These Art of Punk episodes are great (if only they were a little longer),hoping they're not just leaving at three episodes,it'd be great to see more,The Misfits would be cool.
Why is Flea hanging in the bathroom?
LOL here's my black flag logo.>>>>> I I I I
After watching this again I just realized how many times Raymond Pettibone and Flea say"Like you know" a lot of freaking times to point where I just start cracking up as soon as they say it.
why didn't they use actual black flag songs?
Rigo Z Because Greg Ginn owns the rights to them and won't let them be used outside of the band itself.
Rigo Z ...GG probably won’t let them.
Why is flea on the shitter?
+Rhys Rodriguez Probably cause he has a lot of Ray's artwork on the wall
Whats the song at 3:06 ??
I find it interesting that none of these black flag docs include interviews with Greg Ginn. I don’t know if that’s because he won’t do interviews (?), but Greg Ginn IS black flag. There is no black flag without GG!

Crooked Halo mike valley and yeah the problem with new black flag is they’re too slow for black flag
Dank mans alley...because bands are not allowed to evolve and grow?
Mikael Lewis nah not that it’s their playing is slower that’s not an evolution or change

I’m trying to find that flyer that’s behind Chuck and Keith that looks like Michael Myers from Halloween......I just want a good look at it!🤔
'the bars' .

What if Ray did those bars for Captain & Tennille? Capt & TennIIII
Well done.. Explained a lot of the dynamic that has always been somewhat of a mystery.
Everyone who went to Rick Spellman's shop got inked with the four bars.
Flea: "Let's do this interview in my bathroom, sitting on my toilet!"
The intro to this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen.
How come?
raymond 'pettibon' ginn.

Flea was right Black Flag was a dangerous band to see back in the day I can attest to that being a survivor of both the Damaged & My War tours.
Proudaya
So Henry was friends with Ian from Minor Threat?
The more you know. :)
James Hampton they were close friends as teenagers.
Henry's from D.C. just like Ian, he was in S.O.A.
It was Ian who encouraged/pushed Rollins to "try out" for vocalist of Black Flag. The BF song "Clocked in" came from that.
@@crooked-halo From Henry joining? There are demos of Keith and Ron singing it though.

NO, I FUCKING DON'T KNOW. It's why I'm watching your fucking history xD
Flea has his toilet paper threaded "underhand". Punk rock is dangerous!
Flea on the toilet talking about the Zeitgeist of the Black Flag logo.
