_____
Dr. Alok Kanojia is a Harvard trained psychiatrist and realized many leading experts don't know about video games and thus struggle to help people with video game addiction or internet gaming disorder. In this video, Dr. Alok Kanojia discusses his personal struggle with video game addiction. In college, Dr. Alok Kanojia almost failed out due to playing too many video games. Video game addiction is different from alcoholism or drug addiction because video games can be done recreationally. Video game addiction does not have to be solved with abstinence.
This series helps gamers understand how internet gaming disorder can change the way that you think. Similarly, how video game addiction can affect relationships and emotions. Through understanding yourself, you can become a Healthy Gamer.

Shoutout to the camera guy for constantly panning left and right
jesus christ. this
Thanks !
Pretty sure this guy is standing in front of a green screen and the camera is robot controlled.
Auto trackers for this type of video setups have been around for a long time and have become pretty cheap in past few years.
@@PaulB-ky9sd He is very clearly in front of an audience, how did you miss that? He mentions it in the first minute lol
Looks professional, talks like a sailor. Must be a gamer.
LOOL
This has been up for almost a year? Devs really need to buff your AoE size. This is criminally underrated at 2k views.

2days 1.4k more :) its getting up there.. slow but steady :P
Cheyhey 16k views 2 weeks after the original comment. What a huge jump
20.4k three weeks later and 36.6k subs. Algorithm is picking up the pace.
The Dr is out there networking like crazy. This is good.
I love how he speaks from the point like he's an equal to the viewer who is also a gamer. No medicine terms and boring talk that distances the speaker and the listener. Instead he says words like "doing this shit for you guys" and "you guys". It's way easier to engage and listen to someone who speaks like your equal. Thanks for the video :).
I like it more that he didn't make it sounds like a joke or "see I used the s-word, i'm so coool".
Honestly had the opposite effect on me. As soon as he started cursing it I felt distanced. I agree that it's easier to listen to people who speak like you, unfortunately for me that wasn't it. He didn't continue in the rest of the video so here's hoping it's minimal.
Bruh you were doing this when nobody is watching. Your dedication is amazing. Your story is amazing too. People can relate to you especially since you were one of us before. You need to share your struggles more next time.
it always starts out as "nobody is watching"
@@michellamberg3230 alot of people transition from platforms tho
youtube algorithm should recommend this to a lot of other people
Like, comment, and subscribe, lol! We must smash that like button with all of our gamer rage, all that compassionate rage about how many it could help, haha. ;D
Can we just stop and appreciate the 10/10 hair. Out of this world.
I can't thank this man enough. This whole seminar enlightened me at my darkest moment, but more importantly, it soothed me greatly. 5 years ago, I arrived to the (wrong) conclusion that the only option left in order to overcome videogame addiction was to quit playing them indefinetley; in other words, to treat it like other addictions. So I did.
But quitting one of the things I love most turned me into a miserable human being. It just didn't work for me and I couldn't stop feeling the uncomfortable inner conflict. I feared if I started playing anything again I would relapse, and trust me that's scary shit. This lecture (amongst others) truly helped me to take a step back and approach this issue (with the help of great professionals) from another perspective. So far so good, granted I still have a lot of work to do. But somehow I had forgotten, a long time ago, something I truly cherished as a child: that videogames are both an art form and entertainment. Something so simple, got lost along the way from childhood to adulthood and they sucked me into a selfish vortex of self-destruction.
This last couple of years have been challenging, but at the same time pretty rewarding. So yeah, kids, listen to this man and listen carefully.
From the bottom of my heart, thanks mister (Dr.) Kanojia. Thank you.
How are you now? Do you still play?
@@SwordWieldingDuck Nah man, just living the IRL experience. Pretty decent so far. It's been harsh, not gonna lie. But I'm better than ever.
@@trustyWeedGuy I'm really afraid of IRL people say it's Free-to-Play but it's Pay-to-Win
@@lanfour4444 I'm afraid that's so true brother. Thank you all for your comments. Btw, I'm able to play again, and enjoy single player games once again without them interfering with real stuff, pretty happy about that. But online games are still a big no-no.
I love how he is constantly walking side to side and the cameraman has to keep him in frame.
I am pretty sure it's a motion tracking camera.
@@herochrisx What? First: That's not really a thing, and would especially not be a thing you could trust. Second: That does look like hand tripod panning movement.
@@TimoKanal Youre dumb lol. All the lectures in my university are recorded, and the camera always follows the lecturer. You know we have advanced software right and dont live in the 90s. Theres probably a reason he did this series in a lecture theatre, so he could make use of their motion tracking
@@josuke6869 calm down... he's probably not a gamer :P
@@TimoKanal This is over a year later but I still laughed at how ignorant this comment was.
commenting so this gets more exposure and UA-cam can start recommending this to other people.
don't usually comment but this is far too underrated. UA-cam please get this right.
I only discoverd the Chanel moments ago, this has to be at the forefront
It was recommended to me just now (specifically episode 4, and clicked on it to swap to episode 1, and now, i im actually very glad i did and know what ill be doing in the next 2 hours
i am commenting and liking to increase recommendation as well
Quem veio pelo Filipe Deschamps desse a mão no like!
Tmj!!
... from Filipe Deschamps too.
As a recent psych grad, I really would've appreciated if I had a class addressing this topic or had a professor that was like you. Definitely learned a lot and what you said really resonated with me.
I just love how open he is with his language, it makes it so much genuine. Makes a huge difference compared to other speakers. More swears!
Dude this is beautifully framed, I love the way that you go about explaining it. Well spoken. Thank you
Leaving a comment for the youtube algorithm because what I've heard so far from this guy has been more relatable than any of my therapists have been. Hope more gamers see this!
Another comment bump for how important and relevant this topic is and how often it is utterly misunderstood. Really hoping this blows up and helps a lot of people. Thanks for this!
It feels like this guy is going to blow up on popularity, and for all the right reasons
This guy speaks of things only some people will begin to understand. I am part of that group. He does seem to be on to something. That will change people's ways of viewing gamers. I for one was concerned of being an addict because I was told that I am. I don't see it that way, playing games kept me out of a lifestyle that would turn me towards drugs, I also spoken to others who felt the same way as I do. Dr K. speaks from experience and its the truth. People need hear this it will help others understand about who play video games and why.
UA-cam algorithm, please start sharing this. Love your work!
"I'd love to be playing more videogames but i am here doing this shit for you". I'll stop you right there. You convinced me. I'll watch the whole series.
Saw you from Devin Nash videos time to watch all of your videos keep up the good work.
Same here. I needed this.
Your Videos are insane. Not only are they extremely well structured and precise, but they are free and most importantly anonymous.
I want to express my sincere gratitutde for sharing your insight, as I have encountered multiple situations where I longed for an explanation for my behavioural pattern, which I consider problematic.
And thank you for putting my feelings intl words
This has got to be the best series on YT.
Twitch Will definitely Buff him More and More. Reckful was just a start!
@Khaffit He actually said once on stream that he's not that good of a psychologist, but it's hard to tell.. atleast if you're not an Harvard Andy yourself
@Khaffit Yeah. Giving a diagnosis shouldn't Be a thing without a proper analysis, but IT can still help you a lot!

@@jon477 Yeah.. It Hurts..
Wish I heard this 10 years ago, good luck everyone, self care is everything.
My friends on discord who quit WoW with me have all slowly trickled back and started posting screenshots and info about the game. Recently I admitted to them that I realized I've been struggling with gaming addiction since I was 3 years old. (16 yrs on WoW, I was introduced to N64 at 3 in '97) It hurts even more because we would all crack jokes about "bobbys maze" and had this "better then that" attitude boycotting them after the scandal, when information about the cosby suite came to light and the woman who took her life after her nudes were spread around the company. It feels like the people I've gotten to know over the last 3 years are revealing and admitting themselves as hypocrites. I'm really struggling with letting go of the 16 years worth of mounts, memories, and rare goods that I walked away from to write my own irl quests and work on my character irl. I'm struggling with setting boundaries in a gaming community and struggling with wanting to abandon them and their hypocrisy to the maze. So today instead of giving in I decided to look to Dr. K for advice, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for these resources. I genuinely feel that if I didn't have Dr. K's guidance and relatability, I might have conceded my life back to the maze too. Thank you.
Video: "Video Game Addiction Overview"
Speaker: "I don't think the term addiction is appropriate"
And even though it's appropriate where he talked about his addiction to it and then just said some questions
Now this is what I’m talking about he gets it. Nice work
This guy is a great lecturer. Good flow, very articulate.
Great video.. This topic should definitely get more exposure
Holy moly, this series is so accurate.
I just realized that I wasted an entire afternoon typing down quality italian subtitles (yeah I tend to OCD a bit on this stuff) for no reason since that they are gonna remove the subtitle feature in two weeks or so, this is awful x:
Apparently there may be a way but the channel itself must approve them or something, that is after september 28th though. I really wanted to help spread information about the topic and translate all these lectures in my languague but eh...
Can you guys upvote this so Dr.K can see it and maybe find a way to deal with it? Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to do that, that's really kind of you.
Im sure someone will benefit from this, thank you for your work :)
Maybe someone with video skills can edit it into the video and send to Dr.K for re-upload.
I got recommended both reckful and destiny's videos, glad I finally clicked and discovered your channel.
commenting for engagement. this was helpful.
I watch the Twitch streams every week. Love it ❤
This is such an important series. Algorithm spread this!!
Recently found his videos.
And i love this guy. ✨
This is my appreciation comment. 🥂
wow wow wow this is wonderful, I have a lot to learn in my life.
this will help a lot of people. big respect nd appreciation for what u do
I had my phone charging screen facing down and somehow opened UA-cam to this channel. Gotta say it did a better job than youtube scuffed algorithm
This whole thing is extremely interesting listen to. Please share more insight!
Pequenos passos... Um de cada vez! Bora ganhar XP! hahahahaha

Man, Dr.k is amazing!
This video shows that procrastination can be useful
This series was amazing man
Hello. I"m Dr. Goutamsinh Jadeja from Mumbai, India. This path of Dr.K is obviously one of its kind and unique. The part of this video where he mentions that gaming "addiction" is different is very impressive and true....actually calling it an addiction is also not 100% correct....also it would be better if there were some use of the black board behind with some diagrams as visual understanding is quicker.....thanks
Have been looking for this. I teach young adults about addiction issues.
Too good
This dude knows some shit, I'm gonna speed run his show. Let's rock and roll gamers
"too busy doing this shit with you guys"
your a champ im down.
So much worth it!
Watching this while playing games
This longer hair style looks amazing 🤩.
Peace, Love & Serenity
This man is an Angel 😊
UA-cam algorithms need to promote this.
It feels like a video from 2007 and he is talking about discord server. So weird
"You learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation" -- Plato
Good stuff

That's awesome
Well that's really all a disorder is. It's when in your given context, you're doing something considered socially deviant, it's impairing your capacity in life and there's some sort of breakdown in behavioural or cognitive function, like that's just literally what a disorder is. So for me gaming addiction appears to be just stepping into the waters of a disorder when it (gaming) is impairing your life in some way, and when it's influencing your ability to function both behaviourally and in accordance to the established norms of your society
I'm gonna learn the shit out of this playlist.
I love how all the ads for this channel.are video game ads 😂😂
Well, I'm in shock a little.. just found this video while (still) play Diablo II and after all of these years (since it was released), I'm starting to think if I can stop when I want.. 🤔
commenting to recommend
this is amazing
Very cool
This is what the internet needs
Its too bad the algorithm wont let this guy be on the front page. They are scared that this guy will lower youtube traffic cuz everyone gonna be out doing great things.
My brother and I were both addicted to drug. I got sober by starting a maintenance therapy and still am on maintenance therapy. My brother got sober cold turkey and is now addicted to video games. Cold turkey is not safe in any type of addiction. Addiction is a mental health disorder.
bro just saying that his hair here looks epic
Agora vou ter que aprender inglês para acompanhar esse cara kkkkk
god damn, Dr. K.
Yt algorithm didn't recommended this, I had to search for it, shame on It, only.
I FINALLY FOUND OUT HIS FIRST NAME AND ALOK IS SUCH A GOOD ONEEEE
Shoutout to the cameraman for keeping Doc in frame
Dr. K made me want to play Diablo 2 again
good video😀
Is there any way to get an easy full English transcription of the lecture ? *_*
I would love to do Portuguese subs for this whole series and spread this like hell
This is good
This resonate with me specialy hearing diablo 2 I can relate so much.
I've started watching this series of video and I would like to thank you very much for posting these for free.
I've been gaming way to much since I was a teenager and over time I though I was in depression but this series opened my eyes a lot.
lol i think nobody who actually plays diablo 2 would even accidently say diablo 3, I suspect he is just lying to get proper attention, like yours.
Yep. The idea is less gaming, more real world. We can all go through this
Watching this made me kind of seasick. The camera was swaying back and forth way too much while I was trying to concentrate.
True, thats what i thought too after watching this just a few minutes.
I hope the algorithm pick this
here due to new youtube algorithm
Nice video
Very interesting video. Any idea why he has Polish subtitles?
Sincerely,
Someone who is proud to be Polish🇵🇱
diablo 2 was the shit at that time man i feel you :)
Também já fui adicto em Diablo 2
Is there the full lecture somewhere online?

I'm playing Diablo 2 right now. :)
8:31 is it possible to learn this power?
Just what I need, someone to tell me I'm special. I'm sure I won't feel vindicated unfairly from this. 10/10 analysis.
