Christmas Is Real Train Time Too!

  • Model trains are a Christmas tradition. But a real steam train traveling on the New Jersey Transit commuter line at almost 80 MPH is a rare and amazing thing not likely to be repeated but it did happen back in the fall of 1996 and I was lucky enough to take the trip from Hoboken to Port Jervis with my late father in law who worked on the railroads as a kid during the Depression.
Half way through the ride to Port Jervis soot clogged the camcorder microphone so for this video I was forced to "graft" some pre-soot audio onto the video to add the necessary sonic excitement.
Okay, it's not audio but I hope you enjoy this (and show it to your kids and grandkids) and if you do there's even better footage shot during another one of these excursions by a team of people stationed along the tracks here:

Had I real financial wealth the very last thing I would want is a private jet. “Life is too short to waste it speeding between points A and B”. Merry Christmas to all 😄

Louis Jordan - Choo Choo Ch'Boogie
I'm headed for the station with a pack on my back
I'm tired of transportation in the back of a hack
I just love the rhythm of the clickety clack
I hear the whistle blowing, see the smoke from the stack
Pal around with democratic fellas named Mac
Take me right back to the track, Jack
    Choo choo, choo choo ch'boogie
    Whoo whoo, whoo whoo ch'boogie
    Choo choo, choo choo ch'boogie
Take me right back to the track, Jack.
Side note, as i was watching the the might class "J-3-A" 4-8-4 "Greenbrier" Steam Engine roll along on my monitor we had a minor earthquake and my monitor started to move. Whoo. Choo Choo.

Beautiful J-3 4-8-4. Can't believe how many carriages it was towing. My HO scale 4-8-4 wont even look at that many. Either will my Riva Rossi Big Boy😄. Great Video Michael. Merry Christmas from the Gold Coast in Oz.

Port Jervis has that tourist spot where three state lines meet at a point (NY, NJ, PA) and there's a big tower you can climb up onto and see everything. Did you see it back then?

The passengers gave the same reaction to the ride as this was being filmed as first time train passengers did 150yrs earlier I’d wager.
Did this train stop at Tucumcari BTW?
