Thank you, I moved from Mangere East to Papakura in Feb this year I until this video I didn't know there was a museum! And it's just up the road! One thing I did learn when I moved here, is there is lots of everything, like the barbers you saw, not one or two, but heaps. And one thing I noticed that was different from Mangere, instead of being flooded with American burger joints, there's many many more and different ethnic food outlets instead, and their burgers are better. While Papakura is old and can do with a freshen up it does have everything.
My mother lived in Papakura in the 1950s. She moved there with my father in the 1980s until her death a couple of years ago. I would go up to stay with her before she went into care with dementia. Papakura is quiet.
I've always liked Papakura: they don't have the usual chain store rubbish as the malls, with some real shops. You do get a bit of low-life activity but not so bad as Manurewa. That centre should be an interesting visit, lol. Looking forward to it Curls ❤
I’m so glad you went to the museum! My brother and I used to work there about 5/6 years ago - he worked with the artefacts and in exhibition installation/maintenance/deinstallation, and I was the Education Coordinator/Host/Marketing person. I helped create those light boxes you filmed. And that tent area in the military gallery was where I ran school holiday activities and games, as well as where we hosted school visits. Thank you for showcasing the awesome place ❤️
I did not know there was a Lil Abners in Papakura. There's one in Papatoetoe that I used to go to often. This is one of the things I love about this channel. Making me learn new things every day.
There is also a fabulous walk around Karaka waterfront around the new home development just across the motorway from Papakura and Conifer Grove plus wattle downs all worth a visit to walk around their walkways around the waterfront - very nice.. Don't forget to visit Clevedon Markets , Kawakawa beach and the Botanical Gardens at Manurewa - the best gardens in Auckland.
I use to live in Papakura, I remember driving home once from work to see two Maori boys shirtless in the middle of the street fighting while their friends watched from the footpath
As you know by now you can walk through any street in New Zealand and you’ll be sweet bro. Reason why we say it’s rough in some spots is just cause of the things that go on when you close your curtains. Just like anywhere in the world there’s good and bad people right around the corner
Kia ora Curl's, been following you for a wee while now "lol that sounds creepy 😂 anyway loving your truth about NW and adding the tomato relish and loved the interview on Project and they loved you too, so many "ands" bit like the barber's 😂 cheers Curl's love the walk about 🙌🏼
Papakura has some streets that are not so good and probablybest to steer clear of if you don't know the area, it also has some really nice areas. Mangere and Otara were traditionally the suburbs you avoided, but that tag moved to Manurewa/Clendon. Although, there are some nice areas in Clendon and Manurewa. I grew up in Mangere through the 70s, 80s, early 90s and have walked and played sport all over South Auckland. Compared to other places in the world, South Auckland is not that bad, just a few streets here and there can be problematic. And that is due mainly to suspicion of strangers. Nefarious activities take place in any suburb, most people are unaware its going on, even in affluent areas.
I grew up in Manurewa, and I will agree that by the time we moved from South Auckland, Clendon was a place to avoid. Edit: always loved Mangere and Otara tho
Thank you for this awesome showcase of our awesome little town! Did you happen to notice all the garden boxes around town full of edible plants? These are beautifully maintained by Sustainable Papakura and a full of edible plants for the community to help themselves to and enjoy! Also, you need to come back and do a street art and food tour of Papakura!!! As a Japanese fan, you missed a trick walking past IZU. One of the best Japanese fine dining restaurants in Auckland. Go see Bun at Satay Noodle House for an epic Cambodian feed. Pop to Ishtar for authentic Iraqui food that'll blow your mind. The Broadway Foodhall for epic Smash Burgers witha Sam & Jamie as well as a variety of other yummies. Tumeric Flavours of India is the best Indian around. Wash down with craft beers at The Beer Spot or cocktails at Broadway Lounge. And that. And Teeta from Grounded Roots cafe is just gorgeous, that's a great spot for people watching over a cuppa.
I grew up in South Auckland in the 50s and 60s when it was a lot different to today but have family living in the Manurewa area and they love it there.
Downtown is the scariest place to live, especially on an early Sunday morning when the sun begins to show the human damage from a night out and it's mostly because of the numbers.
I've spent many a night out in downtown Auckland and have hardly ever run into any trouble. You have the odd idiot running around, and you may see the odd fight. Every suburb or place has hot spots, but overall, downtown is generally tame compared to other places in Auckland. Alcohol is the biggest issue.
@@2l8mate59 lived there, worked there - ambulances coming for the drug casualties, people passed out in shop doorways, every water fountain smelling like piss and random piles of vomit every Sunday morning and also two hookers and a bouncer murdered in a week and there are rumours of people buried in the domain which sometimes turn out to be true
Papakura town is great to have a walk around, do some shopping in their high street shops. They have some super eating places which we definitely enjoyed. But my daughter lived there for a couple of years and it was a nightmare for her, she had to move out after 3rd time being burgled. Visiting is different to living there.
Originally from Scotland. Lived in Papakura for six years now. I love it. With Takanini being close by there is no need to go into Central Auckland for anything. Manakua not far away either. What's not to like? Shame that you missed the new beer spot and it's cool food court.
Your reaction to all the barbers is hilarious; ultra thick curly hair needs more regular grooming - unless long hair, dreads, or twists etc are your thing. Add to that how well put together/styley Pacific Islanders have always been, you're always going to get a ton of barbers in highly concentrated Poly areas. Its the same here in the US in Af Am neighborhoods, there's a barber on every corner and you'd be hard pressed to find a local's hair looking anything but amazing :)
I agree, we love our hair. In my case it gets real nappy as it lengthens and many of us brown people have like Black people hair rather than white people hair. Some are barbers basic and cheap, others are expesnive salons for ladies wanting colours, bobs, perms etc and some are ethnic aimed at Polynesians, Asians, Indians and even African hair braiding for a group of Negroes moving here.
+1 on the Esmerelda's recommendation, such nice people and good prices.. maybe skip the burgers but everything else is pretty great. (the bacon burger is basically a mega butty with veges)
Definitely a Kererū. They always are wearing a nice clean white singlet -that's how I recognize them anyway. Our biggest bird with the smallest head, lol.
You know Papakura is known “Papakura Town of Barbers” right? 14:13 you missed the beerspot it has an awesome garden bar and there is a really nice food court next door where you can but a meal and take it back to the beerspot. Im glad you didn’t walk into the other tavern tho, got a bit nervous for a second there phewww
In my area N.W & Pak are similar. Countdown can be pricey, not always. There are many stuff in Paknsave that are more expensive than N.W. & vice versa. Not all N.W’s are the same and not all paknsave’s the same. Each area has different prices.

Curls I think you need to do a few interviews with the locals in each place you go to please....
Yeh I second this!

Thanks bro, if he doesn’t go I will.😂
@@OkinInc still think of Callums Bakery ( potato top and bacon and egg pies) when going into Greggs in the UK.

carol yes manurewa say no more......😱😱
Great videos cracked up over some your comments - your making Papakura sunny even in the rain.
It's amazing to see you go to my hometown, genuinely glad you loved it and I certainly miss the place. Can't wait to see where you go next
Just watched you on the project. Proud of you bro. Keep it up
Glad you enjoyed your visit to Papakura. It is a cool place. Moved from there to Pukekohe earlier this year. Like to see you visit Pukekohe.
Town is nice. If you want trouble just go to Redhill 😂
Fun fact) the laundromat at 6:08 used to be a video store, used to buy or rent movies and CDs

Meself like the rain because it is more scenic the places with less people around
Thanks for the walk around, been over a very long time for me down south side, come to my home town Clendon... On second thoughts.. no don't!
