My dad was a bricklayer and so was my grandfather and his father, for some reason my dad didn't want me to be a bricklayer, but I saw a flemish bond on a building and wanted to make sure that's what is was, to this day I live in New Orleans and love to view all the craftsmanship in some of the old brick buildings. Very few people notice, I do and appreciate the fine craft that it displays...
Many thanks for the video as always. Just completed my first Flemish bond garden wall in 35 years. Had lots of nice comments from 1 bricky, 3 builders and various neighbours so pleased with myself. One thing I had big problems with was dealing with misshapen bricks when trying to plumb the piers ie on the stretcher section the top would measure 107mm and the bottom would read 103mm. Trying to plumb was a sausage. Any hints would be most welcome.
I often leave the queen out and lay the stretcher first, I'd quickly measure off of the quoin header and mark in the mortar where the stretcher goes, It makes levelling the queen so much easier. Excellent video as always, very informative!
My dad says you have done a really good video and he says your the best bricklayer on youtube. And I have really learnt loads of tour tutorial videos thank you 👍🧱 keep the good videos up.
Thanks buddy glad you and your dad are enjoying the videos 🤙🏼🧱
You just stole my thunder .A was ready to say . Holly be buying you new boots lol. A love. They yellow london bricks since a stayed in Carshalton and worked up town as a stonemason. Stay strong you two x
Next project is flemish, really looking forward to it, been wanting to do it forever!
Flemish bond is my favorite bond. Although its a slow and expensive build it looks great.
Currently doing blockwork at college but cant wait to get back onto little bricks I find it much more fun but really enjoying it so far
Glad to hear you're enjoying it so far. I coul5dnt wait to get in the bricks. You will seriously start enjoying it when you get to arches and the really technical stuff. I remember absolutely loving it! 🤙🏼🧱
What brought me here was the writer Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, believe it or not.
He was on the Joe Rogan podcast, # 1158, talking about a cab driver in Philadelphia who asked if Palahniuk knew why Liberty Hall (1756) was in such great shape and why it would be around for a long time more. Palahniuk casually replies it's because the bricks were laid in Flemish bond, which took the cabbie by surprise. Nobody ever got the answer right.
I had no idea there would be different ways of laying brick, but it's fascinating to know about methods that experienced craftsmen consider their favorite.
Flemish bond my favourite one for garden walls 👍👍👍
Couldnt agree more buddy. Love the look 🧱🤙🏼
Cheers for that mate. Saved me a bit of time!
please explain what a queen is, the commentary is really good, I have a friend in West Wickham who has a Flemish bond built house, keep up the good work
BLWP That was a serious pilllar , nice work pal 👌🏼, gonna miss you f king and Jeffing at the sky though 🙄🤬🤬😂🧱🧱👍🏼
🤣🤣🤣 F ind and jeffing, I like that 🤣🤣
James is the strongest!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you think about it logically, alternate rows of headers and stretchers have to be stronger.English bond is much stronger than Flemish bond for the walls thicker more than 1½ brick. Flemish bond shows more attractive and pleasing appearance of masonry work. Flemish bond is economical as it uses broken brick bats, although it requires some extra mortar for additional joints.
Great video thanks 👍. Would like to know how to set strings out for 9inch brick work yes please. And yes please video on that quadra bond you said however you spell it.
👍👍👍👍🍺👌 Thanks for your efforts 👍
Hi thank you for the video it was very helpful but could you give me advice on doing just a straight flemish bond brick wall with no corners. Many thanks
Nice set out worked on a Flemish bond wall in the footing before I got pulled off for making good 😂😂 nice refresher
You are our Hero👍👍👍thank🙏💕 you very much
Hey man,
Thanks for the video!
And I think you have demonstrated the only time a brick can be used for a-fence...🤔🤨🤷♂️ hahaha
I think _Flemish-Bond_ is just as strong as _English-Bond_ but it looks better!
However, when it comes to stitching in a pier, then I think _English-Bond_ is superior in terms of strength and economy as the _English-Bond_ uses less bricks and the stretchers run deeper into the pier also.
So yeah, I’m a _Flemish-Bond_ guy and I’m gonna use it for the foundations of my new _Timber-Frame_ house and I’m gonna use *Staffordshire Blues (Class A)* all the way up 6.5 feet, because they are waterproof, insanely strong and are also very very precise in terms of their size.
It might be a bit expensive, but I have to use bricks because of where it’s located and I don’t have a massive crane!
👍👍👍
Another great video mate. And a preemptive congrats on reaching 10k subs!
Thanks Marcus 😁🤙🏼🧱
Great channel cheers flemish is awsome
Hi Matey, love your videos and I couldn't help about your battered shoes! You are just incredibly funny.
Charlie Chaplin boots - get thisen sum clogs lad
Queen closer ALWAYS goes next to the quoin Header. Easier for them to remember! Unless you use a 3/4
Face both sides =13 1/2 inch wall
I love the 'Football bond'
Get as many headers in as you can.. 😅
We had always started head stretcher first course then 6 inch first brick on the return to get that three quarter and not have the queen in there on the first course
I like random bond. You don’t see a lot of it here in the uk but you see it a lot in Germany and Holland.
good video as always mate but i think we would learn more form them if you were to do 2 corners you have soke about how you do the corners first then run the rest in on a line but i think it would be helpfull to see what happens when they meet up as depending on the length it wont alway be possible to marrie up the header streacher similar for all the other bonds as well how do you deall with that
Quacka if that’s right never heard of it would like to see it thank you 😁
Hi Rodian, I watch a channel called
"Martin Zero" I think it would be great if you did a collaboration or at a minimum a review of some of his videos. He ventures and around old Manchester/ North West's industrial past and talks about the History. BUT the old brickwork that he gets to experience in his video is amazing. It would be great to understand how, from a bricklayers perspective, how hard and the effort it talks to complete such old feat of brickwork engineering. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next video pal.
Well done.
Please make a video about quetta bond x
Please make a video of running a line in 9" brickwork pls
Any idea how much extra bricklayers charge to do Flenmish vs Stretcher bond? Either including cutting or assuming cut bricks are provided.
Dont get a robot in, get rodian in
You are right looks great strong too.
And yes setting up lines for 9" brick work would be tastie that would catch the boys out schooling me
Is the bond not originated from Belgium ?
would appreciate it if you could make a vidieo about quetta bond
I'll add it to the future video list 🤙🏼🧱
Thenks you for shou me method of fremish bond
Hey Rodian, first off, thanks for the vid sir. Just for your info, didn't get the last 2 notifications for your vids....
Glad you enjoyed the vid Rob. That's strange, maybe your phone decided to turn the notifications off? Thanks for letting me know though 🤙🏼🧱
Use Lego to work out bonds if you are unsure. It works well except for the queen where you'd need two pieces to make a q-closer. It would work for demonstrations models.
... It looks like Caramel Ice cream and even sounds like it. I worked with different plasters and stone compounds; Vacuum mixing. And I often wished I could eat it LOL! Maybe if I worked on a line, I'd have to have a break for Ice cream.
I would love to see how to set up the lines please
rodybond is the strongest
🤣🤣 Deffo
Does this bond only work on that size brick??
Question??
What is the max span a 9” retaining garden wall can be before you have to build your first pier?
That would depend on how tall the wall is and how much it is actually holding back. If in doubt, put them in. A 9 inch will still fall over if it stays damp. A nice bit of tumbling in looks fantastic. I don't know the answer, I don't remember ever being taught that as there are too many variables.
Thxs guys
Didn’t get a notification from UA-cam for your last three videos so I’m commenting in the hope you can make some money off these tight bastards 👍
English bond has no continuose rib joint anywhere in the length of a wall but Flemish does which is why English is stronger. You did ask!!!!!
Hi Philip, this is a non bricklayer question! What is a rib joint?
@John Bowkett well if your looking for a man hole on a Friday night English bond will do!!!!!!!!
Do you wear them boots all the time or just when filming ??
What would you charge for 8 x 6 m garage base?
Flemish is derived from the region of Flanders (Vlaanderen). It's the Dutch speaking 'part' of Belgium.
Pls make the video kawatter bond don’t know if Iv spelt it right
Flemmish bond is my favourite type of wall. Please tell me when will I learn this in college?
Level 1 or level 2
Thank u
To be honest I cant remember when you will learn it, my guess is toward the end of your first year
Morning , more bonds than Ian Fleming .
🤣🤣🤣🤣
English bond is stronger as headers tie through full on 9 inch
Flemish isn’t Dutch, it’s Flemish.
We’re easily offended when people associate Flemish with Dutch. 😂 (Flemish = Flanders = Belgium), obviously the Flemish people have been around way longer than the country we reside in.
Just an fyi.
Flemish bond is amazing and so much fun to work with.
Bricks laid wages paid!
What's quatter bond then borris
How about Flemish from Flanders?
how do you fiinsh the top
I have done a video about topping a poer cap ua-cam.com/video/Rkk42p3MY4U/v-deo.html
Hopefully this is what you're looking for?
I'm a great fan of Flemish bond myself, and while I also do like English bond, Flemish is my own preference. Neither of the two are seen very often here in the US, where running bond tends to be the norm. Overall, an good presentation.
0:58 the left shoe is smiling at me?
The language of flanders is flemish is a region in netherlands and belgium and is 1 of belgiums 2 languages ...
👏👍🏻
Sean Connery is the best bond.
🤣
It is Dutch bond mush
👍 👏 👏 👏
Please keep shouting at the planes as I like to see the jokes and expressions that comes out of the drama caused by the planes LOL. It won't be the same without having a go at them planes.
🤣🤣🤣 Bloody planes
jonathons right flemish is stronger than english bond there would not be much difference between them i read a long time a go that there is not much difference it was research at some univirsity
And when you have 3 5 7 or 9 stretchers between a header it's no where near a strong as English it just looks better
Kristian Cooper That would be garden wall bond, not Flemish. I was shown at college, a steel ruler being able to be plunged down through a new built Flemish wall from top to bottom. It was also used to show that 3/4 used at stopped ends do not work technically correct although the prevent cracking and peeling out. So agreed that English is the strongest bond.
👍
Bricks laid wages paid !
What are you seeing as an average wall height nowadays
I assume you mean garden wall? I would say waist height is probably the most common. They can vary a LOT I've built some 6 foot high and some you could easily trip over 🤙🏼🧱
Rodian Builds thanks for info Rodian
Your boots are still laughing at you !!
They love a good laugh like me 🤣🤣🤣
@@RodianBuilds don't know how you work in them things flapping about and getting wet feet ....you need to look after your feet .
I didnt mind them untill a couple of days ago....I stepped into a puddle and a wave of water flooded my boots. Think I need some new ones now 🤣🤣🤣😉
Thought Flemish bond was the strongest bond ...I remember our collage tutor saying so about 30 years ago .
agreed
English bond is the strongest
your tutor was a twat then
@@jackrussell9811 that really made me laugh
English bond🙂
that beeping splash screen was extremely annoying
👍 👏 👏 👏
