The guy has a style that is head and shoulders above almost everyone out there and I get a bit misty eyed just thinking about how good this guy is. I know all the guys work now but everytime I would watch a film and think, 'god this photography's good' it was Deakins behind the lens. He's a cinematographer who would never take you out of a film for the wrong reasons, everything is so carefully crafted and considered, but you will remember the stamp of Deakins work and that's that you'll think 'crikey this looks amazing'. What a truly monstrous legacy he leaves behind him as he continues to move forward and now onto new things like 1917 where he is sure to clean up every award available. Constantly innovating and problem solving. What a true icon of cinema.
not just the transitions but the music choices are also perfect. This was on my watch later list for a long time, now i will not delete this to come back once a while.
I’m so glad Roger is also so unbelievably humble & open about sharing his craft! It’s amazing to know that such a masterful artist is heartwarmingly generous, kind, encouraging and still on the quest to learn more- rather than becoming egoic or aggrandizing from the well-deserved adulation.
What a fantastic journey of a life dedicated to telling visual stories. It is magical to see the impact that powerful images have over our lives. This must be the most rewarding part of being a DP. Slowly building a catalog of images that have changed people. Images that will be around for centuries. Images that show your progress and talent.
I have probably gone back and watched this video over a hundred times. Such a well-put together video thst shows off and pays tribute to one of the the greatest cinematographers in the film industry
There's something he started doing more constantly in the last decade that makes everything inside the frame pop. Sort of like a 3d effect. The lighting, lenses, camera angles, movements, all work together to give texture to the scene. His visually stunning frames can't be mistaken for somebody else's. Perhaps one day I'll fully understand how he does it...
Xplozhun85 I mean many cinematographer have access to these new lenses and cameras, yet few make a shot sing as well as RD. The first time I've been aware of that was with No Country, and it's on film. He masters everything from the colors to how the light reacts to an actor's skin. Somebody will figure this out on YT one day lol
There are some photographers, who can do that and there are some cinematographers, who can do that. Not many of them it is true. Study them and you will get there :) Don't forget to read and look for other art form as well :)
I think he gets the call more as to when to shoot that particular shot, magic hour when if you scout/ block with intent, you get that gorgeous backlighting that a good sensor can handle well. He is the master of that. He shoots for his colour palette in-camera, which is an incredible commitment that his pedigree commands. His directors thank their stars that he his shooting their films.
Goddamn brilliantly edited, holy shit. The music choices are perfect as well, and it's just synced together in such perfect harmony. Christ this is good.
I like how dramatic the music gets the the Coens are mentioned and how it's almost like Barton is Deakins being led to the Coens, who emerge (embodied by John Goodman) like a demon out of hell.
props to the filmmaker of this fittingly professional classy elegant tribute to Roger Deakins who is both one of the absolute best most artistic passionate cinematographers alive and in the history of cinema while I was hoping for the music to change, perhaps to include some iconic Coen Bros music, I can see why it did not, rather remaining the classy music to maintain the paced elegant editing of this fitting salute also glad there is no voice over, as those are often annoying in these kinds of salute montages; altho one does need to look up to get the important information on Roger Deakins and his amazing career...and one of the text blocks offers a nugget that makes this video al the more inspiring to any artist wanting to work, and have a career even, in the film world... Deakins almost left making movies, having returned to England, it states, after working on a forgotten 90s flick which it states he describes as a bloated mess...and fortunately for cinema and its lovers, esp those who appreciate the Coen Brothers, the Deak apparently ignored his agents advice to ignore an offer, which instead Deak fortunately took, to work with the Coens, as their own career was growing, on their quirky wonderful Barton Fink, which thanks to the Deak is as eccentric and beautiful to look at and watch as is the script and material...Deakins went on to work with the Coens on all their masterworks and later to work with others of the best directors around, on some of our most beloved films, including Frank Darabont (Shawshank) and later teaming with Sam Mendes which lead to the best, looking and feeling, Bond film ever in Skyfall and even more recently teaming with upstart maverick filmmaker Denis Villeneuve on the amazing Prisoners ... a partnership that will give us the new Blade Runner 2049 film which if nothing else we know will be beautiful to look at thanks to the world's most fantastic professional cinematographer Roger Deakins, who is clearly a class act of an artist and man...
Just saw it today, it s incredible job you did, it gave me chills on your music, just like his movies, a underneath reservedness with full emotion running, classic! And your video just did that as well! Thank so very much, for making this classical Roger Deakin tribute !
- Oh Brother Where Art Thou? - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (his best job) - True Grit - Skyfall - Blade Runner 2049 (only achievement). Where are those other four Oscars?
Great selection. Great images. Great story telling. I was expecting some explanations on how to create a story in a visual manner, but only watching these sequences was beautiful and made me to deeply think how they were created and what they want to communicate.
Thanks a lot for this video. I made myself a drink with the intention of watching some quality entertainment as I indulge. However time was ticking, my drink was half empty (not full) and my spirits were down. Clicked this video as a last resort, not expecting much but at around the 5 minute mark I knew it was a straight to "liked videos" type of deal. The music choices were perfect as well as the editing. So much so, I felt compelled to leave this comment. Thanks again.
SIR WHY AREN'T YOU MAKING VIDEOS ON A DAILY BASIS??? I couldn't believe this video belonged to a small channel. I'm both astounded by and angry at you. GREAT work. Pure beauty.
What a beautiful compilation of the work of the great Roger Deakins. Wonderful! However, in case you are interested, your written sections had a few punctuation typos, usually involving the lack of an apostrophe. For example, you wrote "Deakins successes" and it should be "Deakins' successes". Nit-picking from an English teacher.
This was like an astral travel into the soul and creative mind of a great artist, I literally have tears in my eyes after watching it! Great job on the editing
awesome piece of work this is! What was the music for it? Thought it ebbed and flowed brilliantly (a lot of change in tone and pace!). Like a few others have mentioned the transition at 9.30 is seamless - the whole piece is lovely I find myself watching it over and over

Couldn’t have said it better, totally agree.
@@yourtube2784 thank you for sharing this with us! I appreciate your channel.
Best editing I have ever seen in a yt video
He WILL finally gets his first Oscar for his mind blowing work on Blade Runner 2049
You're goddamned right about that!
Vin ce correct
Did! 💪🏾
Yeah he did get Oscar for Blade Runner 2049 and 1917...
Truly one of the all time great cinematographers. His work should be studied in every class in cinematography and film making.
A beautifull edit! the transition at 9:25 !!!
Wow, beautiful editing man. I wasn't expecting this video to be as exceptional as it was lol
Thanks, glad you liked it :)
that shot in fargo @04:55 man... it gets me everytime..
There are only a few people who I consider heroes. Roger Deakins is one of them.

Well done documentary on Roger Deakins. I could watch a breakdown of Deakins' work for hours on end. Beautiful imagery, yet always serving the story.

I agree, noticed the more recent ones seem to just glow a bit more than the older stuff!
Could be the new digital cameras he's using! The Alexa XT has a higher f-stop than most film cameras now. More f-stop means more light in the image!

that car chase scene on 8:58 is by far one of the most beautiful car scenes I've ever seen!!
what movie is that from?
@@ginario6791 no idea actually, would really be interesting to know
jeroexx nvm found it, it’s from prisoners👌🏼
I just mentioned, that there are quite a lot of my all time favorite movies filmed by him...
This deserves more views. Great work.

Thanks for tracking down all those early works
Thank you Roger deakins for your inspiration and images.
This is one of the greatest videos ever made
Pretty awesome... thanks. And Roger Deakins is an amazing cinematographer... He deserves an Oscar.
Beautifully made James. Great tribute to a great Cinematographer.
- Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

This may be the best video i've seen on youtube
Such a great time capsule of my greatest visual influence. Very well done James. Absolutely told.
Thank you so much for making this video. His work is inspiring every other way.
Sicario was a great movie
And even better Cinematography , off course ;)

This deserves a voiceover
Love the music
Beautiful.
The images are more powerful than the words.
Love the matching the horns with the actual trumpet transition at 4:05
Great work. He's a legend
You've done him a service, with how well you edited that mate. Nice tracks too!
Very much appreciated, thank you!
Wonderful experience
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

A beautiful body of work given a beautiful tribute. I didn't know the Deakins shot "Rock It" for Herbie Hancock and 1984, by the way .
With Godley and Creme directing
9:35 smoothest transition of all time...
Very proud and thrilled to listen to Nick Cave, most beautiful ost in the whole world ..
Thank you so much, James, for ur wonderful work OMG This is soooo nice...
GREAT video! I loved it. Thank you so much for making this
your assembly and editing of these scenes are excellent! Mr. Deakins is a cherished composure of visual essence.
Beautifully done! 👏🏻👏🏻
Roger deakins the best😍😍😍
Very nice work. I am very moved by his work and the way you put it together. Thanks for posting this!
Awesome visuals on this awesome director and great editing on your part!
Great Editing...👍
It's a shame that he did not win any oscars.
He just did
Love that score from the assassination of jesse james. i can hear that voice over narrator just listening to this score.
Nice work buddy! So touching!
Brilliant tribute, well done
He was born 24 May 1949 - not 1942.
Thanks for putting this together!
I really enjoyed this, thanks!
Amazing edit.
This is beautiful! :)
I loved the background music
Great work.
WoW! just Wow!
Thank you¡
he loves Silhouettes
Nicely done!
OMG! he shot the music video Rockit. 1:29 thats all i needed to know.
[tips hat]
you should do more of these...
literally every frame a painting
I wish one day there will be a movie directed by david fincher, cinematography by roger deakins, and written by aaron sorkin

Jesse James is so fucking good
Wow..... Sir
What, Roger also did "Rockit"? You never learn out.
Legend is legend
Finally have the Osca.
Sad that Blade Runner 2049 wasn't released when you created this.
It would have made this edit even more interesting.
I LIKE IT, THANKS (But the music is annoying.)
Very nice, but always spellcheck before hitting “render”. It’s “receive”.
Cool
There should be scenes from "How to train your dragon" movies. He also worked on them.
Wow.
I could only think of Watchmen while watching this
Beautiful video. What movie is that scene from at 8:58?
圣Sam Sinatra灵 Thank you. That scene’s from Prisoners.
James Murphy you're welcome, and thank you
Help?
May I please know how do I get license to use music used in these videos for my youtube channel?
Interesting use of Koyaanisqatsi - totally distracted me from the content of the video.
What kind of equipment do you have to use for effects at 6:32 or 8:07?
That’s a lens he had custom built which is nicknamed a Deakinizer.
I watch on my phone UA-cam videos. I’m not reading such small text. Just something to think about-thank you for your effort
Ok, thanks for the feedback 🙂
Ask Roger Deakins if he shoots for mobile.
