Thanks for creating and uploading these fascinating interviews of Sonny Rollins. Ifirst heard Soony Rollins live when I was 16 years of age at the vanguard in NYC. Heis such an inspiration as a human being, and has attained thehighest level of musicianship, yet he continually strives for more. Heis one of thepremiermusicians that our country and world has produced.
These reflections. like a gas, expand to fill the space alloted for them. When thinking of EVERYTHING as a limitless whole (hole? :-) and not just music - there's a point beyond which thinking or conceptualizing adds or brings nothing further. Sonny's deep. When it's time to say Goodbye to himself at last, I bet he'll be ready (or at least not too surprised.).
To be a jazz master, it seems to me he must have either 1) prodigious musical talent; or 2) spent a lot of time learning the harmonic and melodic structures and relationships, and how to reproduce them on his instrument. That requires a lot of thinking-related study. It is the dilemma of playing jazz. It requires a lot study to play well over complex chord progressions. Then, it becomes difficult to escape one's thinking. Sonny was a prodigy, recording with Bud Powell and Fats Navarro by age 18.
@royallighting7 ehh.... u can look at it like that but u have to realise that there is a difference between thinking of what your playing over, and thinking about what your playing ya dig?
