On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-14-18.
We're looking at a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss in Calypso Coral ( Orange ) Paint. The car comes with the factory V8 302 CI engine.
The car's Owner is Pat Mitchell. Pat’s had this car since 2001. He shares he did the restoration himself and it has taken 10 years due to finding parts, time, and money to acquire the parts. He shares he’s not an “Expert Restorer” and the car is not “Concourse ready” however you can see it looks OUTSTANDING! Pat shares he’s always liked big cars with big motors, however after a ride from a friend in a “Boss 302” he just liked the power and handling of this one.

Wow it looks great! Pat was spot on about the parts hunt. Boss parts definitely don't grow on trees. Kudos to him for his patience & his wonderful Boss 302!

TheGunfighter45acp, sorry but I have to disagree. There are several people that have Ford NOS parts for those cars. Of course, the Ford NOS parts are quite "pricey" but a properly restored '69-'70 Boss 302 Mustang is highly valuable. I own a one-only a 1970 Torino 429 SCJ 4 speed drag-pack plain-Jane station wagon. Ford museum has offered to buy it from me 3 times, for big buck$, and I always declined. I also have a 1969 all-options yellow Boss 3012 Mustang that I bought new from TASCA Ford in RI. To this day, I don't have a clue about how many all options '69 Boss 302 Mustangs that were ever made or how many still exist.

Good times for sure!! Back in January of 1970, a guy I was working with traded in his 1969 Torino Cobra in on a 1970 Boss 302 fully optioned in a color called Grabber Blue. He gave me a ride that car one frigid night in the winter in northern Wisconsin. The roads were perfect, and we were running a steady 80 mph when he floored the gas. The rear tires broke lose and the car fish tailed slightly. That hood scoop opened up, and it sounded like that big four barrel was sucking the clouds from about three counties

Wow! Pat has a gem. 👍👍 The only thing I would change is the factory braces (2) from shock towers to the firewall. Scott Drake makes a single piece unit called an export brace. Every Mustang and Cougar deserves one. Great video Lou.

When we look at this 1969 Mustang it highlites why many of the sterilized creations made these days are considered unexciting.
When the driverless car crap takes over in years not far away we will further yearn to have a piece of history coincidental with when free will was plentiful. And so the prices/ values will likely rise.
An A+ to Pat as well as a pat on the back for ten years dedication to this restoration !

Lou, as you know, I bought an all-options yellow 1969 Boss 302 Mustang new from TASCA Ford in RI. I still have it and I maintain it to always be in pristine showroom condition as much as possible. Initially, I wanted a 1969 Boss 429 Mustang, but Bob Tasca Sr advised me against doing so. Over the years, I bought 4 high-performance cars at TASCA Ford from Bob TASCA Sr himself. He never steered me wrong. I still have 3 of those 4 cars today. I loaned one of the 4 for my brother's 1973 senior high school prom and he totaled it that night. The car was a '72 429 CJ Torino Sport. BTW, '69 Boss 302 Mustang didn't have the "Shaker Hood" ram air scoop option, but TASCA Ford installed one of those kits on mine before I took delivery.

@@loucostabile I thought I had told you about my '69 Boss 302 Mustang.. Maybe I didn't. If you spent a day, or two, with me, you'd be amazed about my auto/truck knowledge and all the classic/vintage vehicles that I've restored and/or worked on. I currently own 9 classic/vintage Ford high-[erformance vehicles with the 10th being a 1961 Ford Starlina tri-power 390 engine an 4 speed transmission. It's about 95% fully restored and it will be 100% done in about two weeks.
I'm gonna be building a 1969 Ford Boss 302 Mustang model kit in a few months, and this video really helped me with colors and details, especially under the hood, that Google Images could not.

Ever the pedant, the front “spoiler” on this car is actually an air dam, whereas the rear “spoiler” is a wing designed to create downforce. That foldaway rear seat makes this Mustang a real practical classic. Impressive red line on the tach hints at the thoroughbred engine under the hood. Perfect condition, in fact the only fault I could find was a scuff mark on the dash under the ignition caused by the key fob. Hats off to the enthusiastic keeper for persevering with this restoration !

This car doesn't have the rear valance cutouts for the exhaust tailpipes. Mine came with them. Mine also came with an AM/FM radio. This car has aftermarket gauges, and the speakers are not correct either. Mine also came with aluminum valve covers, not chrome. Boss 302 Mustangs didn't come with P/S either. Manual close ratio steering only. I made my own under hood panel between the grille and radiator support. Mine is fiberglass. Mine also has an under the hood "Monte Carlo" bar like was in a Shelby Mustang. One non-factory I did was rear disc brakes from a '79 Lincoln Versailles. I did that conversion in 1981 from a wrecked car. Very easy conversion and well worth it.

Sweeeeeeeeet! Lovin it! I'm really not a fan of Orange - but when its broken up with the c-stripes and such., its loads more sexy and palatable. The design is perfection. I had a '69 Boss. It was white, and it had the 3.91 rear axle, a Hurst competition + shifter with reverse lockout (red knob so you had to pull it up to go into reverse)a cue ball instead of the T handle. It had the back light (louver), the wing, radial TA tires didn't have the rims this guy has. I had hood pins, without the standard latch. I don't remember a rev limiter, it would wind to 8k RPM with no problem EXCEPT the spark plugs would fail after about 2000 miles and needed replacement to get that kind of performance.. The compression was real high, I want to say 13 but I'm not sure. The plugs would wear their electrodes because of the high compression (I think) and that's why they needed replacement so often. The car had a dual point distributor because of the point bounce at high RPM's so it was tricky to tune. The Holly carburetor (I think it was a 750 double pumper which seems way too big for the displacement but it would really rev) leaked from the fuel bowls all the time and needed constant attention. The pistons extended below the casting of the cylinders and tended to crack, I heard if you got the engine balanced professionally that solved the problem, but it was likely pretty balanced to rev that high. Ford only gave the car a 90 day warranty and the guy in the video was right, no air conditioning. I live in Arizona and never noticed! When the car is so cool you are cool too! Anyway, I bought the car with 2,000 miles from a guy and all I had to do was take over the payments!!! It listed originally for about $3200 dollars so I got it for less. Hard to believe. It had Hemi heads and 15 mm spark plugs if I remember correctly. Traded it in on another car, never gave it another thought with the idea that there would be more cars like it, but then the smog motors came along and now, nearly 50 years later I am full of regret. Oh well, sorry for the long post. PS I don't think I had the two gauges in the pillar on the left or the simulated wood dashboard.

Something that was neglected to mention about the Boss 302. What set the Bosd 302 apart from a plain 302 was the Boss 302 had heads off a 351 Cleveland

Those all-chrome Magnum 500 15x7 wheels were an option. The standard wheels were argent paint Magnum 500 15x7. BTW, Cessna airplane landing lights could easily replace the '69 Mustang grille high-beam headlights. 300,000 candlepower high-beam headlights are fantastic.

The Boss 302 and 351 Cleveland engines are what the Chrysler 318 polysphere could have developed into if Mopar hadn't foolishly discontinued it. Wonder how much more "fun" the Boss 302 Mustangs would be if they had built 400's in them (which also had 351 Cleveland 2V based heads).

My dad had that identical car. It was his daily driver. It was stolen from our driveway in March of 1987 in Dallas Texas. We had to fight the insurance company to get what it was worth in 1987....$7,000. An undercover cop came by our place two years later because the guy who stole it was confessing and he wanted to check his story. They chopped it for parts.

sweet. One of these would eat those Chevelle 454's and Camaro 396's on a road course. Ford was so ahead at suspension and braking. Just handled great for a 69 and hooked up instead of constantly wheel spinning. This car was made for SCCA Trans Am series and competed with Camaro Z28 with the Chevy 302. Both were purposely underated at 290HP so they could race in Trans Am which was 300hp and under. The bigger brother Boss 429 was made for Nascar which used Big Blocks.

I didn't know about the "no shaker scoop on 69 Boss 302" either. I've seen photos and video of Boss 302's a lot of times, but I guess I never noticed that the only Boss 302 cars that had them, were from the 70 model year. Come to think of it, this is the first time I've wondered whether all Boss 302's had a shaker scoop, or whether it was an option. The more I think about it, the more ashamed I am for being a Ford fan who doesn't know this stuff! Lol

@@loucostabile this guy is right. With bosses, Shakers only came on 70's.
Weird that the BOSS 429 had the rear quarter scoops, but Shinoda removed them from the 302.
Interesting point.
Just recently discovered that the 1969 Boss 302 did NOT have side scoops in the body like other 1969 Mustangs. So, the 69 and the 70 Boss look the same.

Lou Costabile, I have a 69 SCJ Cobra, no drive train, it's a drag-pack car, had ram -air, 4sp., locking rear end, buckets, console, etc.
now it's rolling on an 8 inch and has bad floors. :( has 140 mph. speedometer and 6,000 rpm tac.
I've been talking to a fellow that has a wrecked Tesla. he want's to make it electric! think I'm gonna sell it and see what he does with it! :b
it's a shame but I've been storing it twenty yrs. or so. I'll get 3 grand, and I payed a lot less back then.

Lou Costabile, too rich for my blood! think I know where the original engine, 4sp., and possibly the rearend is, but those would be 10,000 give or take! just too cost inhibitive for me. :(
that feller also has a ram air setup for 428 but that's even worth maybe 2,500 just as parts!
it's a shame, but unless I win the lottery before I sell, it ain't happening. :b
the floor is bad but rockers are good, the rear quarters need just patch panels, plus inners but many need the whole panel up to the roof and are still considered restoreable.
subframes good. it's special for cobra as the shock towers were pushed out slightly from the fact..
I've done displays such as lrg. diesel engine cutaways etc. im also a machinist. I could do all the work. welding, paint, mechanical, fitting interior, etc.
(I've been looking forward to the work), but realistically can't afford. :(
sometimes a guy has to turn his head and let stuff go, I guess.

The Pantone 17-1744 TPX Calypso Coral is the color and the SDS is based on the type of paint used to make the color.
