- In today's video I show you how to to make a latex mould and how to use liquid latex. Liquid latex can be used for mouldmaking and in this tutorial I'll show you how to thicken your latex so that it's strong enough for all types of casting. You can use silicone for mouldmaking, but it can be expensive and I find liquid latex to be much easier to use and it tends to be cheaper. But hopefully you now know how to make a latex mould and the basics on how to use liquid latex. Materials Needed: Latex. Latex thickener. Brushes. Cup (or other container). Something to stir with. An object to make a mould of.
Steps:
⦾ Place the object you want to make a mould of on a non-porous surface (e.g. plastic, vinyl).
⦾ Pour your latex into a container and use an old brush to apply a thin layer of latex to the mould (remember the flange!). [Note: Some objects may require a layer of Vaseline or talc to de-mould].
⦾ Repeat 3-4 times once each layer has dried.
⦾ Add latex thickener to the liquid latex until you get the desired thickness and now again apply a thin layer to the mould.
⦾ Repeat 3-4 times once each layer has dried, gradually adding a thicker layer each time.
⦾ Once the mould is to the desired thickness you can then de-mould the object.
⦾ Trim any excess if you wish and get casting!!!

If I wanna make a mold of a very tiny object such as a smooth stone can i just skip the thickener that you used? It is 1in x 1/2in
You might be able to, your mould will be very fragile though!
@@paulc2250 If I were to make a mold for a small smooth stone, I'd attach a clay funnel shaped pour area, encapsulate it all in clear silicone RTV, cut it open with an irregular cut (so it seals when closed) just enough to pull the stone out, then close and pour resin in through the opening in funnel end of the mold

What would be the procedure if I were to use sillicone instead? Can I just use the cup that I want to mold inside a plastic container (as a barrier) and pour the sillicone all around the cup up to the edge? If so, can I then use my sillicone mold to cast resin like you did in the other video where u used this mold to cast pins with resin? (I just dont wanna use the latex.. too many layers seems time consuming). Thx!!
You probably know but others don't - You can use other than the thickening gel in latex. Layers of thin fabric, like gauze, will stiffen/strengthen your mold. You can also add fiberglass (as used under joint compound on walls). Of course, you'd want to add these only after the first several layers that pick up the detail and be careful not to make the latex too thick in any one coating because it air cures and thicker areas may skin over and prevent curing under that area.

I just use 8 layers of the normal stuff without a thickner works perfectly for thickness and strength some moulds I have are ten year old just using 7 to normal layers brushing on a very thin layer first to catch that detail, i use it for casting parts for my model's saves alot of money on buying resin parts for my military ww2 model's!

How do you stabilize the mould while pouring plaster, cement, resin etc if it's more intricate mould with a face or something? Or do you suggest using silicone instead, for more intricate designs? THANKS!!

Hi Anthony, i would like to make the missing part of a fossil using it's imprint. If i put latex inside the imprint to have a positive mould, can i use on it latex to have a negative mould, (maybe must i pour talc on the positive before applying latex) ?

Can you add mica colour powder to latex too give colour to your molds. And how do you make a stiff mold to hold your latex mold so it doesnt shift or move as you por your final product to make final pieces like out of resin
Good video, Anthony. You might show folks how to make a mother mold to back the latex. I've used latex primarily to cast concrete but it does require a release like spray Pam the cooking oil. I don't like it for resin or things that heat up but when I used to cast resin into latex molds, I'd use a release like PVA. Your video on Sugru reminded me that there's a series of materials (like their Apoxy) available from Aves that you might check out. Keep up the sculpting - and the videos!

Welcome to the channel! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 And thanks! It depends on how thick the layer is, if it has no thickener it'll take a few hours, if it's a super thick layer it can take a couple of days to fully dry!

You can indeed, done it several times before and you can also colour the latex with latex paint which is mixed into the liquid latex.

Thanks for the tutorial - latex seems better than silicone, question is what do you actually make the positive mold of? the latex gives you a negative of the piece what do you make the positive out of after the clay one is ruined?
No problem Shayne! I wouldn't say latex is necessarily better than silicone but I find it's easier to use and more versatile, and definifely cheaper! It all depends on what your making, as silicone might be better than latex for the project. Hi Maya, yeah you should be find patching it up with the method in the video. If they're small enough a little dab of thickened latex should be fine, if the holes are larger you might need to make a small sheet of thickened latex and then stick that to the mould with some more liquid latex. Hi Shanda, you might be able to but I'm not sure how strong it would end up being. I think Sugru would work better for this if you've heard of it? I'm making a knife prop and I sculpted it in Plastalina clay (oil-based). What would you recommend to separate the clay from the latex? Also, what should I use to cast the prop? Would it be possible to use more latex to cast it and use something to separate it or should I use something else like foam or silicon? Thanks for the video!
Hey Madi! The latex itself once dried should come away fine from the prop however if the clay isn't smooth you may end up with a textured surface on the knife prop. I wouldn't reccomend using latex to actually cast the knife it just wouldn't work well. An expandable polyurathene foam would work well and is pretty easy to use, it all depends on what kind of finish you're wanting on the prop, I wouldn't recommend silicone as it'll bind to the latex and you'll never get it out. if i want to use latex as filling material in a punching or kicking bag, say i pour it in a pvc cylinder shape bag, will it set or harden?
No it won't, it may form a thick skin but it will still be liquid, I wouldn't recommend using latex for that. Maybe use bean bag beans instead?
In between layers are you putting a cover over your cup that has the latex decanted into?
I am yeah, I usually just put some clingfilm over the top so that it doesn't get a skin on it 🙂

Anthony, thanks for the video. You have pinned a link to colouring resin. Will that substance colour rubber latex equally well? Looking at responses you have given to viewers here, after leaving the mould for 1-2 days between thicker layers, do you clean/wipe it at all to prevent dust etc. collecting? Using layers like this, do you have any problems with lamination if the end product is malleable? Thanks in advance.
No problem! You can actually buy specific pigments made for colouring latex so I would use those, I've used them before in the past and they're very easy to use, very similar to a paint. If you have a particularly dusty work space or you're working on other stuff then you could wipe them, but I don't think it would make much difference aslong as the underneath part of the mould isn't exposed (which it wouldn't be). I'm not sure I understand the final point, the mould itself is still very felxible but the more layers you add the stiffer it becomes. They layers adhere to eachother too so they don't 'come apart' or anything like that. Hope this helps!

It depends what your making, silicone is stronger but more expensive and slightly more complicated to use. Latex is cheap but easier, but weaker too. I have the 25 litre size and think it was around £100 although they come in different size at different prices. Hope that helps!

I'm trying to find something I can use to make a mass of foot to upper calf silicone mold before Halloween gets here. You can get special latex for your skin, although I have a feeling it's very similar to normal liquid latex. I think skin latex dries quicker, this stuff would take a while. You could possibly use alginate for a body cast? What are you casting with?

In terms of making the mould itself, how cost effective is the latex, in material use? And do you require to use a different brush on each and every layer ?

Hey Robert. Latex will hold up completely fine to Polyurethane resin, you shouldn't have an issue. Latex is a cheaper option to silicone although a latex mould won't last as long as a silicone mould would. You can use the same brush, just make sure you clean it well before each use, however the latex will eventually ruin your brush and you'll have to throw it away, but it can survive for quite a lot of uses and washes.
Latex is just as good in my opinion as picking up fine details so you shouldn't have any issues there either. 🙂

I've started building/sculpting in clay,( life size 3D portraits) is there anything that I would need to coat the dry clay piece with in order to make a mould in Latex, some are quite large. I see you suggest Vaseline or talcum powder, which would you suggest please, there are some under hangs and also some rough surfaces?

Hi Sue, It's a difficult one as I can't see them however what I would suggest is coating the clay pieces in a varnish first to really seal it up. Once that's dry then I would use a thin layer of vaseline before latex to help get it off. If they are fully 3D with lumps, bumps etc you may need to cut a seem in the back of the latex once it's dried in order to get the latex off, then you can glue it back together with some superglue and add a small amount of latex over the seem in order to seal it. If that makes any sense?

Hi when you have finished putting about 25 to 30 coats on the model, how long before you can take it off model ?
If you allowed each layer to dry before adding the next one it should be ok to remove in a few days.
Do you know why does latex turns pink in the container or cast, is it some chemical reaction caused by heat or something, is it expiring, I'm making some casts and a few are turning pink at places
It could be to do with sunlight. Latex should really be kept away from sunlight as it can weaken the material, but that's all I know really!
Probably a simple question. Could you suggest a good pigment? Something I can add to the latex directly. I'm working with 15 gallons at a time if that makes any difference.
I've only ever used proper latex pigment which comes in liquid form, it's not too expensive and the colours can be mixed too and works really well. If you google latex pigment some should hopefully pop up!

You'd never be able to make liquid latex thick by using latex on its own as it's just too thin, or if you could it would take aaaaaaaaages! The only material I'm aware of that thickens latex is a proper additive but there might be other options out there, not sure though!

It depends on whether it's had thickener mixed into the latex. For the thinner beginner layers maybe a few hours, once the latex gets thicker it takes longer to dry so anywhere from 1-3 days, it all depends on how much you use. It changes colour when dry though so you'll know when you can apply your next layer of latex. Hope that helps!

*(#1.)* is this the same kind of latex as the SFX/Halloween makeup? Because I have a big bottle of the SFX kind and I’m curious if I could use it to make molds with...🤔
*(#2.)* does it *need* to be meticulously brushed on, or could you simply dunk the item in it and leave it hanging over a drip catcher?
(Obviously this could pretty much only be done to small and fairly simple objects...but I’m curious if it would make any sort of difference in the process... good or bad. 🤷♀️)
Lol. I think this latex is different to SFX latex and is specifically used for mould making, you might be able to make a mould with SFX latex but I'm not sure how strong it would be. And yep you can definitely dip an object, I've done it several times with various things, even when I wasn't making a mould, just requires a bit more space doing it that way. Hope that helps! 😁
can a latex mold be put in the dishwasher or hand washed? and or is it safe to touch good with?
Yeah you can wash a latex mould no problem, not sure about putting it in the dishwasher, I'd just handwash it with soap and water.
also how long between layers? and you you clean brush for each layer? does latex have to be covered thats in cup so it stays usable? thax
Depends on the thickness of the layer, usually a day. Yes clean your brush. And yes make sure to cover your latex otherwise it'll start to set on its own.

Thin layers usually take a couple of hours, thicker layers can take a couple of days.
So how many times can this latex mold be used vs a silicone one? thanks this was very simple to understand how to do... i see a 16'' lion mold made of latex selling for over $200... i wonder how much latex cost to make it ? thax again.... i have a 3d print i want to make into a mold for concrete...
You can usually use latex mould several times depending on what you're casting and the shape of it whereas silicone will last far longer. $200 sounds far to expensive for a latex mould, you could probably make it yourself for cheaper!

Great video, just wondering if each layer has to dry completely before the next layer. I know with silicone each layer is meant to be tacky and didn’t know if latex was the same?
Glad you enjoyed it! I would say it's best if each layer is fully dry because otherwise the bottoms layers might not fully dry/set.

Do you have to use a thickener or can you just do more layers?
In order to get a proper thick wall of latex I would recommend adding thickener. It is buildable without a thickener but it'll take you aaaages, especially if you're making something thick like a mould.
So, what about clean up.?. It looked like you used the same brush on every layer.. Can the brush be cleaned. ? I bought a pint bottle of Monster Latex to try, It came today.. :)
It can be cleaned but over time your brush will get ruined. Oh well have fun!

It's Polycraft liquid latex thickening gel/additive. You can get in on Amazon and other online sites!
Hi .... is the latex left over after each coat still useable for the following coat or does it start to cure ?
Yep you can still use it, just make sure it's covered otherwise it'll start to go thick and get a skin. It lasts quite a while, but after about a month it becomes unuseable if you've added thickener.

Question I have some scars on my skin that I want to stamp on to paper.. I can build layers with latex and peel off. But dont know how to tranfer on paper, any ideas?

I just had a look and it looks like you can't get it in the US. But I did find a site called Holdenslatex which has some very similar products to what I used and is based in the states. Hope that helps!

How long does a latex artwork last? Does it ‘deteriorate’ after some time - like go limp? Thanks for your video.
I think it lasts a pretty long time, doesn't deteriorate as far as I'm aware, it hasn't with me anyway. If anything I would say latex seems to get stiffer and more rigid over time and looses it's elasticity. Hope this helps!

Length of time latex lasts depends on how you look after it. There are a few things you can do to help keep it serviceable for a long time.........Keep out of sunlight. UV light from sun destroys latex, so keep away from sunlight at all times and preferably store in a coolish dark place. .......Cleaning. Don't be tempted to use detergents when cleaning your mold. Petroleum by products in some detergents can attack latex and reduce the serviceable life........Always use mold release spray, or brush on when casting.

You can but you would need a really thick well supported latex mould (depending on the size) if it's just a small flat shape then you shouldn't have any issues.

I'm not sure of the name of the chemical but it's called 'Polycraft Thickener Additive For Latex' and I think I bought mine off Amazon.

Just binge watching and see that you used it in the imbedded resin/tacs video !! So many projects lol hard to remember them all. 😊. I guess then one could put almost anything liquid - that will harden and pop out again, not stay stuck.

Have you used latex for molds on textured plaster?
I haven't but I have used it for clay and it works fine. The only issue you might have is that the surface of the plaster won't be perfectly smooth, so if you're going to use the latex mould to cast resin for example after it's finished, you'll end up with a frosted surface on the resin which would need sanding down, if that makes sense.

It is haha! You can get it on a site called MBFG and it's called liquid latex. Think the large one I use costs about £100 or so, so not cheap but they're available in smaller sizes too!
Can I make flat sheets to practise tattooing on using this method?
I'm not 100% sure how well latex would tattoo but yeah you can make flat sheets with it 🙂

How long does it take to dry between layer and layer?
Hey Jorge! It depends on how thick you apply the layer of latex, if it's quite thin (unthickened) a few hours should do, thicker layers can take a day or two!
Is there any way to accelerate the drying of latex?
Hot air or a fan should help accelerate the drying process, i'm not sure how significant it would be, but I think it should reduce the time quite a bit, similar to how you would accelerate layers of paint to dry!

It is very expensive and I am looking for some material to reduce costs but I can not last so long making a mold. Do you know any other economic way to make molds for can't reproduce in plaster?

can you use this on your face i brought a bottle of polygen liquid latex and not sure if its for face as it does say for all uses but also says craft moulding so dont want to risk doing a small area on my cheek if this stuff is just for moulding only lol many thanks if u do get bk to me x x x ps if i cant then i will happy play around make something tnis video was helpful im just asking a dumb question lol or maybe not
Hi Emma, I wouldn't reccomend using mould making latex on your face, much better getting proper makeup latex. That being said I've had this all over my hands before and haven't had any issues but still I wouldn't reccomend it. You can also be highly allergic to latex too so if you are going to do in then always do a patch test to be on the safe side! Hope that helps!
