A call for adventure, the lure of the mysterious, a cautionary tale which equally warns and also fascinates, Wojciech Kilar's masterfully builds in 4 minutes a beautiful tale which leaves us ambivalent to the true nature of danger. The harpsichord sparkles guarded by solemn and unflinching piano chord. We are aware that we are thrust in world that spiritual forces are in motion. It is the sound of an old world knocking back at our doors. Old Europe in its former Baroque decadence , Medieval Europe in all its obsessive pursuit either with the expression of the divine through its cathedrals or morbid fear of a seductive Lucifer. Then comes the voice. Classic, feminine, non threatening but unsettling, strong but not motherly, mysterious but somewhat too familiar. What is this thrill? We listen to the melody which comes to us in waves, relenting, retreating, circling us, caressing us, then leaving us only when we admit not being ready to part with it yet. At first we are not necessarily stricken by an overwhelmingly beautiful melodic device but our defense bow down to its relentless nature. It build and builds and never allows us to breath nor to wonder where it is taking us. By the time we get to the second phase of the Vocalise at 1:30 we are not only eager to give ourselves to the music but we are equally curious. The melody has just changed rising higher and higher. What is happening we ask. Vocalise stands as the musical expression of how even the strongest of us will fall to the seduction of what might even seem simple, banal, unassuming, harmless. It's not its sheer power that finally defeats us. It is its relentless nature that little by little chips away our mental resistance. The bakery on our way to work which after 6 months of smiling at us finally serves the doughnut we once laugh at, this sitcom based on ridiculous premises which grows on us by the 10 episodes. I could be the embrace or the kiss which we never aimed for that once entertained in a moment a levity leave deep roots which blossomed in indestructible obsession. By the time we succumb to the temptation, the true nature of what we've given ourselves to reveals itself fully. at 3:33 the dark change of chord expresses amazingly the realization that we've opened the flood gates, that while we are basking in pleasure we are fully aware that we are signing away ourselves to an unbeatable force. We've been deceived and now suffocating in this fragrant powdery coat of danger we are too weak to say no. We have been deceived and maybe we yearned for that thrill.
You can lose yourself so easy on this ... U can picture heaven , love , and all those things that puts you closer to god ... And when it s over i wanna play it again to find that feeling again and maybe this time it won t go away when the tune is over..i want to keep that state of bliss again and again like a junky but i can t ..a thought comforts me : you will
Who needs words with a voice like that? Listen to it and feel a million memories struggle to find the meaning....all closing in on something important and focal in your life. Then finding it's release. Money can't buy that emotion.
I don't know how a voiced of an angel sounds like but when i heard her, Sumi Jo's voice this could be the voice of an angel so relaxing, so inspiring, so peaceful... Thanks for sharing.
She is an angel on earht singing for deadly people like you and me, but she will live for ever. God!! evry time I hear her voice I feel like I´m in heaven.
I saw her in St. Petersburg, Russia with little Jackie Evancho and Dmitri Hvorovstovsky at a concert called "Bouquet of Opera". I loved Sumi. She was flirtatious and and completely charming, and like a surrogate mother to the little American singer.
no words...no adjetives.....no way to explain this voice....and THIS song...its...like to be drinking a beer in the sky with thousands of angels.....floating....watching the world going on...
I just found my heart and my soul listening to this masterful composition and exquisite interpretation by Ms. Jo. Just marvelous. Divine. Exquisite. Profound. It is perfect love and peace contained within song and harmony.
Superba voce! Este de fapt una din vocile preferate ale mele langa si pe acelasi loc cu: Virginia Zeani, Angela Gheorghiu, Mariana Nicolesco, si alte voci divine: Florica Cristoforeanu, Elena Cernei, Hariclea Darcle, Arta Florescu, Maria Slatinaru, Eugenia Moldoveanu, Maria Cebotari, Maria Bieshu, Silvia Sorina Munteanu, etc. Daca ai ocazia sa asculti "The Flower Duet" - Lakme - Delibes, o sa ai o surpriza foarte placuta. Sau Regina Noptii - Flautul Fermecat, sau Ave Maria - Caccini.
Who needs words with a voice like that? She is reaching down deep into your long forgotten soul, rekindling lost memories, lost passions. Touching what you thought was vanished and offering a guiding hand to what is possible. Rarely such a voice comes our way.
I don't know what the voice of an angel sounds like but when i heard her voice, Sumi Jo's voice this must be a voice of an angel so peaceful, so relaxing, so inspiring... thanks for sharing. I love it.
It’s truly amazing the power of music…this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my entire life. It was so exquisitely composed that people might find their hearts and their souls listening to it. It’s just marvelous, divine and profound... No adjective could ever describe such an overwhelming masterpiece. I’d dare to say that this song takes your mind far beyond your reality to the land of dreams!!!
ethereally sung Sumi spins her magic and voila we are moved deeply and profoundly! Her mezza voce is tender and devoted. Her Coloratura never forced or pushed her ability to find the delicate sweetness of this haunting melody and never force the vibrato and volume brings rich depth and yet a lightness that makes this piece Amazing!
I;ve never heard this before -thanks for posting, oaanaa. The music is fabulous with Sumi's voice ethereal/celestial/Heavenly. And yes - the picture is awful of her - she's such a gorgeous looking woman - but not in this photo!!
@TheNadia61 You have all the right tastes in music - I listen to this during the day while I am working and also see the film from time to time. I don't like that photograph either but thank you for the music - very haunting and I hear it even when I am not listening

I found this song a few days ago and i must say that i can`t stop listening.... the feeling is so impressive....what a magnificent voice and interpretation, i think that i`m kind of falling into some kind of magic forest... the idea of the beer is not bad at all...haha, maybe in the middle of the forest there is a beer fountain...XD...anyway..beautiful!

@oaanaa I like the picture. It's an unusual picture for an unusual & non-classic song which, btw, is gorgeous. As is Sumi Jo's voice, always. Like some heavenly creature residing here for a time. ;)
LIke many I share the view that the photograph is sadly not a good one. But the music reminds me of so many things that are so easily forgotten in this mad, lost world! If this music makes you think of floating angels - then you are truly fortunate! And gifted to be alive!
@wanderazo I not only find this music haunting but your words. They are full of longing and lamentation. Whoever and wherever you are - you are gifted to have known such pleasure in a world that is lost and hungry!
I love how this is just pure vocal with no words.

I don't hear heaven. I hear melancholic sadness; a yearning of the lost. Inspite of that, or maybe because of it, totally mesmerising.
