Thank you Guthrie, for being kind enough to share your time with us. You're a good human being as well as being a great musician. Sorry to hear your hands giving you trouble. Hopefully they'll get back to where they were, but it's nothing noticeable to anyone but you I suspect. 😊
Joe Satriani also even E.V.H. Cramps of hands from over repeatedly Playing their guitar 🎸 even Stevie Ray Vaughn. A jazz player say they have to try unfreezing their hands 3 hrs. Before any Performance with guitar Warmup's excersize's
Hey Guthrie, what is your approach, how do you deal with jumping in last minute gig playing covers as a duo? I had the opportunity to get up and play guitar with a friend last night for a 4 hour bar gig. Laid back gig acoustic, I on electric. Was asked less than 24 hours before, had not played out in over a year and less due to ongoing health issues. More of an intermediate player, decided to do the gig. It went ok as bar goers saw. I made many mistakes and got fatigued pretty quickly following, transposing on the fly. Have the option to play the same gig again tonight. Just curious of any short hand approaches, tips you have to prepping. Was given partial song list. Thank you for all the great content. Hope your hand gets relief soon.
Criminally underrated. You've really inspired me to start playing again w/ renewed vigor. For weeks i been listening to your live performances on UA-cam over and over at work. You and uncle larebear have some bitchin tunes man. Really digging what you guys are up to. Thanks for everything you put out for us.
Fabulous blend of country, blues, soul, swing, gypsy jazz. Sounds so tasty and tasteful. This is becoming a whole new style unique to you. Great lessons and insights. 👍
This was perfect actually. How do i say this? There is a difference when you are messing around like this for fun and when you trying to share a teaching, that makes me feel like listening for fun and enjoying compared to attentive listening to learn. Although i was still picking up what you have been telling us. If y'all don't know by now, its chord shapes, caged, triads, Major, Minor, 7th, and M7. The foundation is key. I been playin 22 years and didn't have this foundation in the beginning so i started over basically 4 years ago to unlearn and relearn. Because of Guthrie really driving this home tied in what i was piecing together from others. A big ahha! moment. This was cool to see a guitar debut. I appreciate this video
Thanks, Guthrie! I see a chiropractor for my neck arthritis mostly (too young for it, but flew Navy in jets off the carrier). Causes pain down my arms and into my hands My chiropractor also does my wrist and hands and it’s incredible relief. Good luck with it. Have fun at the Bitter End.
This is insanely good. I just watched Lage's solo acoustic thing from Belfast right before this and this improv is like a companion piece in that my jaw remained dropped.
That intro contains some of the most amazing original vocabulary along with several nods to the historical legends. Hope your hands heal well Guthrie! I’m in my mid 60s and starting to feel some “pins and needles” when I play.
So sorry Mr GT to hear of your struggle with your hands. Man, for us, we can't see any difference. The fluidity, speed and confidence with which you move across the fretboard is astounding. But sure can commiserate. As an older player, and living rural where we use our hands a lot, it started to be worrisome. Fortunately, like you said, regular practice and stretching has reversed what looked like a decline. Will be hoping for things to improve for you. We need to hear you for many, many years to come.
"Nerve Flossing" or Nerve Glides have been a huge help for me. Never knew what it was, but it's here on UA-cam. (Median, Ulnar, or Radial are three great ones for hands/arms) Also, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Boron, and Turmeric are all great for the fluidity and easing up the pain a bit. I take them all the time. Recently started the Boron as recommended by Dr. Berg (again, here on UA-cam!) Definitely worth looking into if you want your hands to feel like your 25 not 45!
Sounds great as usual. Just getting a chance to tune in mi amigo. Btw voltaren was a life saver for me before as far as hand pain and tendonitis in my shoulder and elbow from an old boxing injury etc. Also, I just hit 50. It might help? I don't know if you are interested? But, just throwing it out there. Have a good trip etc. keep rockin! Thanks for all the music! 🙏🎶
Hi, I have also had problems in the past with my hands and wrists while playing. I bought wrist warmers, which I wear when practicing. They solved my problem and perhaps would help you.
Glad you guys got this collaboration cranking. It is so good. I have mixed emotions about having to share you guys with other cities. I selfishly want to keep you all to ourselves here in Music City.
Ugh I just finally moved out of Chicago two months ago! Very disappointed I won’t be able to catch you. And martyrs is one of my favorite Chicago venue! Nooooo
Guthrie, when I hear you play with that natural flow where you connect ideas on the instrument effortlessly, shows that you are in great shape brother! Keep sending these superb ideas our way. Thanks a ton!
my gosh that is some badass guitar off the top! omigosh dude you are crushing it… if there’s trouble with the hands from out here on YT it looks and sounds flawless, don’t sweat brother
Your flow as a player is so cool. I watch your stuff actively but I also just listen sometimes when I'm working just to absorb the melodies. Oh and btw, my two main live guitars are a Tele and a Grestch Jet. They compliment each other in a cool way across a gig I think.
After this video, I’d love seeing you guys do a video of having fun trying different guitars just up the road at the Chicago Music Exchange in February!
That thing you played, that you didn't know what it was, sounded F'n Great! Along with everything else that you do on guitar. Nice exploration. Love your style, man. Really looking forward to the 3 livestreams next week. Cool gig, you got going, in NYC. Sweetah!
That opening riffage was... well, there are no words. I mean, Glorious, Remarkable, Phenomenal, Stellar, come to mind... but still, jaw dropping speechlessness. 😯 Thank you so much for the share, GT! By the way, anyone who's interested, Jordan Perlson uploaded some really awesome Drum Cam vids. Go show him some love! 💖
You sound as great as ever! Would you ever consider doing a studio/music room tour? It would be cool to see the room and a little behind the scenes. Thanks for all the amazing content!
Guthrie Howie here there is a warm. Up exercise and it is stand up straight and move your shoulders up and down helping with the blood flow to your heart and hands sounds great
Guthrie, I’ll share - weird as it is. I’m a middle aged Midwestern dude that plays guitar every day, gig once each month. Career isn’t music. Went to a yoga class with my wife after she didn’t want to do it herself. Thought I’d go to bank up some points to use when I screw up. They did stretches that made my hands, forearms, elbows and shoulders feel like they did when I was 20. Shocked. I kept going with her - but partially because it is in another town and no one knows me. I was shocked with how it helped.
Sweet! Finally close enough for me to make. Bit over a 3 hour train. Get a hotel and hang in Chicago for a weekend. Already texted my travel agent. And she's booking the ticket tomorrow at ten. I will be there!
Gt, with that gretch pickup switch. You probly know this but anyone who doesn't One easy way to figure out what pickups are active is to grab something metal, little screw driver whatever and tap each pickup with it. You will hear it through the amp clearly. In and out of phase is another story.
3:10 wonderful bluesy jam over the progression that became most popular with Hotel California. We are limited with chords, but all about music is too choose from our unlimited ways of input.
Gretsch controls on that one Switch nearest your head is the pickup selector down=bridge, middle=both and up=neck. The toggle switch just below that one is a "Tone" switch similar to the Gibson ES345/355 uses capacitor to emulate middle=no capacitor used/brightest tone, down a bit less bright/similar to tone turned halfway down, up=way less bright/tone know turned all the way down. Master volume on the lower cutaway Individual volume knob for each pickup The toggle at the bottom of the guitar is a "standby" switch which is off in the middle and the up or down are signal pass through/on. TV Jones filtertron pickups are the nuts. can get great tele tones but no hum.
I came to the comments for this! Wasn't disappointed. Thank you! I've always wondered what all the controls do but never enough to actually look it up 😂
@@StarlightGuitars Glad you filled him in on this, I knew because I used to play a vintage 68 Blackhawk, The down position on the pickup selector was where I lived, adjusted amp. for that, never used the other switch much/occasionally. Actually liked the Standby switch. It was my 1st good guitar and only one from 1970 til 76. Then went les paul and Rosewood tele. It had the SUPERTRON pickups in it, they were the BEST PART of that instrument for sure.
Oh wow this playing is amazing GT! Such rich musical ideas its so good to hear and very inspiring, real blessing thanks so mutch for sharing. I love that flow man so glad you put out this videos! Im sorry to hear about your hands. I had heavy problems with my tendon and comfry really helped me a lot. Playing double bass gigs and not practicing a lot gave me pain. But you have to take the smelly brown one of DR ANDRES. I suggested it to a musician friends with tennis ellbow prblems since years and it really was the only thing that helped him. Its a natural thing just ugly smelling i personally really feel the strenght in my hands coming back after i put it on. I dont know if you have a complete other thing, but If you would give a try and dont find it i would from the heart send it to you. i can buy it here in switzerland. Man GT your to young to have problems and pain is shitty and scary but yeah we all get older..take care of yourself man, i wish you all the best. Thank you for your awesome videos! It's what they say: until you're 40, you body takes care of you. After you're 40, you have to take care of your body. As a 40 year old I should be taking that advice seriously ;) But it's almost weekend so time for a beer (but not as much as 20 years ago!). Gretches are great, but it's a different story than your regular fender/gibson!
Look into Turmeric Curcumin and Magnesium supplements ( One each, once a day ). I had joint pain in my fingers and knees, and after taking those for a while, I don't. I'm 68 years old, by the way so, obviously, those types of aches and pains aren't uncommon 😆
Bro, what do we need to do to get you out to Oregon somewhere some time? Stop by and say hi on your way back from Hawaii? Wife and I enjoyed your show at the underdog last month, thanks!
Hi Guthrie. Maybe try some stretching exercises, this might help your hands. Regularly playing sitting down gives me neck issues, so I have to stretch it out. If you search on YT there’s a good John Petrucci video on this subject. I also take Glucosamine for my joints, but you may find that Curcumin, Omega 3 or Cod Liver oil supplements give some relief. Hope this helps.

Come to California and bring Larry. It’s warmer here in the winter and it might be good for your guitars and your hands!
Love how the Gretch makes you play subtly different
That Gretsch sounded fantastic!🎉
Just love watching you play. Keep the lessons coming. I look forward to each one!

Amazing what you do with a Tele … but I’d love you to apply your talents to that Gretsch … it would be an awesome addition to your show!

You are a fantastic musician.
Bring your jacket. Its absolutely freezing that time of year in Chicago.
Dang, that Gretsch sounds really good!
Hi Guthrie, arnica oil could help with your hands and wrists. Wish you all the best 👍🏼

Celebrex and acupuncture have kept my hands playing for the last twenty years. Try it!

The Gretche sounds beautiful in my book. Sounds like the real deal.
