Always split your bamboo before adding to a fire. If a sealed section(airtight) is put on the fire, it will go boom. More noise than damage, but it may damage your hearing(temporarily) and may throw sparks to ignite your surroundings.

I'm a big fan of the show survivor and have always thought of this idea for a shelter and am always surprised nobody suggests it

Here in KY..we call this type of plant "cane"....and it grows in "thickets". I know it isn't true bamboo.....but it's in the same family. Here it only gets about an inch around at the base...inch and a half tops. I've built a lot of shelters with it...blinds...forts when I was a kid.....and made a lot of impromptu fishing poles.

Bamboo contains a lot of silica. If you are working with it frequently, make sure you keep your tools sharpened, because they'll dull out faster than you think.

Good video, just one thing that bothered me, when you started to pry the paracord off the machete, you were pushing your hand towards the blade, if you slipped you could have had a pretty bad time of it slicing into your fingers before you could stop the momentum. I would just wrap my paracord so you have to unwrap from the other end toward the handle. Just a little critique, but it could prevent large problem.

    Military Skills (lost)
    Jungle Malaya, Borneo (British)
I was surprised at the lack of Jungle skills (Australian Jungle Warfare Centre Canungra) 90s
Modern training (diluted, various activities curtailed)
    Boy Scouts skills (lost)
    Same with scouts (modern living)

I wonder when that landowner planted the bamboo. It's like cancer. If you want it, contain it. It goes berserk.

This stuff is bamboo, not cane. Where I hang out it's called "guadua". You guys (especially Alan) are unquestionably the lords of the southern Appalachians but the skills to survive nicely in jungle environments are a little different. Sure, I know bamboo is found here but is not commonly utilized. Couple of suggestions. Split bamboo doesn't give you much protection from a real downpour. Maybe the was another resource that could have been used for your roof. Most importantly, your split bamboo could have been used build a platform to get you up off the ground. Lastly, please don't sharpen your machete like that. It's a good way to slice your hand. Find a suitable rock in the creek and work your blade on it back and forth with both hands on the machete.

I totally agree with you, David. Dry sharpening is never good for the blade and takes about four times longer to sharpen. Out in the field, it was just easier to use Nouc Mam or concentrated fish sauce to sharp your K-bars and knives. Just make sure you roll up your sleeves or take off your utility blouse so you don’t get the sauce all over you, and easier to wash later after you’re finished.

I carry an Ontario 18 inch machete and a Swiss Army one handed trekker. Machete for large chopping and the Swiss Army for small tasks, too easy to cut yourself with a machete on small tasks. I have used a machete for over 40 years and I know how to use one. I dull 8 inches of the blade in front of the handle with a file, just incase I hit myself with it while chopping, I only use the last 10 inches of blade for chopping anyway. Learned that while surveying and I hit my legs a few times, never cut myself.

I would have thought (with no experience) that the halved canes you used for the roof would have all had the green side facing towards the outside of the shelter. Are there any pro/cons of alternating The layers the way you have in the video?k x

Bamboo in ancient Vietnam (even now) had very wide usage. You plant bamboos around the village for defence against wild animals and invaders. They can be used as weapons. Bamboo shoots can be eaten (they're quite good actually: ua-cam.com/video/LZ09TqD4ER0/v-deo.html) or you can put rice inside for a very aromatic meal (ua-cam.com/video/0eS1qBMJh_o/v-deo.html). Obviously, you can make furniture and shelter with bamboo. You must plant some bamboo in your bug in location.

That bamboo makes a great rice cooker with angle or slanted cuts to make a rectangle door on the side of the bamboo. Just add rice, water, and lay it at an angle either over or next to the fire to get at it easy. You can make chopsticks from the bamboo while its cooking, which doesn’t take to long to see the steam escaping from your bamboo door. Then serve with some pepper and some Nouc mam. You can also sherd and mix some can tuna.
“Ngon Lam”, which means “Tastes very good!”
