Fashion illustration is essential in fashion because it visually communicates design concepts before garments are made. It allows designers to explore creativity, refine their vision, and convey details to production teams. Fashion illustration also serves as a historical and artistic record of styles, enhances marketing appeal, and builds a designer’s portfolio by showcasing their skills and aesthetic. In short, it’s a powerful blend of artistry and practical guidance that supports all stages of fashion design.❤
His illustrations of the 1910s are the quintessence of the spirit of Art Nouveau. In his early works, the influence of Aubrey Beardsley is felt. And in his later works, Art Deco flourishes brightly. It is a pity that he passed away so early. His influence on fashion and style is difficult to overestimate. Thank you, Valerie! 😍💖
Wonderful! How could I never have heard of him?! Interesting that the faces - like those in Mucha´s pictures - are never really pretty or beautiful; and that the ladies` heels are much higher than the ones actually worn at the time. Thank you for posting!
Thank you!❤️Alphonse Mucha and Georges Barbier, despite differences in style, created works united by sophisticated decorativeness and sensuality, characteristic of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Both artists paid great attention to details, ornaments, and lines that emphasized the refinement and expressiveness of the figures depicted. Female images take center stage in their art: for Mucha, these are idealized images of women resembling goddesses, surrounded by flowers and ornaments symbolizing natural beauty. Barbier, in turn, created female portraits in the Art Deco style, focusing on elegance, refinement, and the luxury of costumes. Thus, both masters elevated feminine beauty and fashion to a symbol of their era’s style, each through his own perspective, creating iconic works that are still associated with the elegance and richness of early 20th-century details….😉
This is excellent, thank you! A few notable developments during the ‘20s; the influence of Hollywood on fashion, with some of the earliest “star” costumes designers such as Adrian at MGM and Travis Banton/Edith Head at Paramount Studios. The introduction of the bias cut from Madeleine Vionnet essentially changed fashion forever. Innovations in new fabrics such as Rayon and exquisite tailoring using velvets and chiffons.
Thanks for sharing these beautiful illustrations! Can you recommend any good books on Barbier? It looks like some of the images in the video come from a book? ❤
Hi❤️ 1. “George Barbier: Master of Art Deco” by Claude Thuillier. This book provides a comprehensive overview of Barbier’s life and stunning reproductions of his work! 2. “The Art of George Barbier: Love, Elegance and Art Deco” by Catherine de Goursac 3. “George Barbier: The Birth of Art Deco” by Franco Maria Ricci. It includes examples of his work in fashion magazines, theater design, and collaborations with famous designers of the time. 4. “Elegance in an Age of Crisis: Fashions of the 1930s” by Patricia Mears and G. Bruce Boyer .While not exclusively about Barbier, this book contextualizes his influence on 1930s fashion and includes visual references to his artistic contributions. Thank you very much for your interesting! Valerie.
Thank you for your feedback, I hadn’t thought about that. But, judging by my audience, more than half of them are men. So, yes, you’re right, I will focus more on men and men’s fashion in my stories. Thank you for watching!❤️
