What a coincidence! I just bought an old old ax that needs a sheath! Tip: Old purses are soooo cheap at thrift stores. I have a real leather pink one I’m going to use!!
What I love about Coalcracker Bushcraft is how simple and yet pragmatic all of these videos are. I have stayed away from an axe sheath because I thought it would be too difficult to achieve. Thanks so much.
I was excited about seeing this video. I’ve never heard of o4 seen an “S” needle. Would have liked to have seen more of the using ie stitching with an S needle. Thanks👍🏻
Very cool!! I’ve been looking for an easy traditional leather sheath project! Now I can get my hatchet out of the old tshirt it’s wrapped in. Lol! Thanks DW!
Really nice to see someone making something with thin leather, and not vegetable tan! I have a tonne of low to mid range leather scraps, and Im looking for projects for them. This video is a breath of fresh air mate. I have some axes and hatchets with no sheaths, and about 3kg of leather scrap. I think I will follow your guidance, maybe sew in one or two layers of welt, and do some DIY sheaths to protect them. Really appreciate this video. UA-cam is full of vids about how to make sheaths out of super expensive tan, but this is the first I found using more affordable leather material. Thx
FYI it would be really easy to use/modify this pouch design so it ties off around the handle behind the axe head like an overstrike protector. Good skills mate
Very cool! I would worry about the handle, if it's able to "swing" at all, kind of wallowing out the slot on the bottom. (Hey, SOMEBODY has to worry about this stuff, LOL!) It made me think about the possibility of maybe putting a couple of stitches through both layers right at the ends of the slot. I thought that might strengthen the potential stress points.
..been there.. done that! Lots of fun and accomplishments.. Plus you can learn from any mistakes.. great confidence booster! Thank you, thank you! Be safe😉
Last small details, wrap head in plastic wrap, boil the leather and wet form. Boiling will stiffen leather (at least the pouch area), and wet forming will customize the fit, and even can reinforce the cut for the strap.
Really like the distressed / traditional look of that sheath. I'm planning to glue & sew some distressed leather on some veg tanned leather and put a welt in it, but make one in this style. Fun video! And yet another reason to carry some scrap leather and artificial sinew with you in the woods.
I just made two bit covers, they don't cover the entire axe head, just the cutting edge. I made it from an old Craftsman tool belt. I incorporated the " Craftsman " logo that was stamped on the belt. It runs right down the blade and looks super cool. For the time being I have it sewn with small nylon cordage, I plan to get rivets and rivet the leather together and then put straps on each one so that you can fasten the cover to the bit. For now I have elastic cordage holding the cover on, it works well but doesn't look so swell . Great video, I really like the look of that cover. I may end up making a couple of these too :P Thanks a ton for all the tips and tricks you share.
A bit off topic : But I am having thoughts on all of the Bushcraft shelters, not addressing wet. Getting wet and how to stay dry and warm. This is the season where thermal sensitivity is paramount. An example was watching a 55 gallon drum liners vid that showed a raised bed, which was covered by what I saw as a tarp to small. The water hits the drum liners and you will be wet. I am seeing the same across all Bushcraft channels. Now I am just a Nube and have very little experience, but It has happened to me and I was hoping this could be incorporated into future videos across the board.
Good video. Don't forget to condition that cabin-axe's wood handle with come boiled linseed oil. What about making a how-to-video for fabricating a new Leather Handle Guard/Collar for Axes and Hatchets? Not all wood handles are designed the same, some are long-tear-drop shaped, so how do we achieve the best collar fit?
Thanks for the video. It comes at a time when I need to make a cover for a tomahawk. I assume this will work on one of those as well as it will on an ax, but I don't have any leather. For that reason I was wondering if you think I could use a piece of hyde from a farm raised Nauga that I harvested back in the late 70s?
Thank you. I have never even heard of an S needle before. I wonder if a light coating of oil on the inside of the pocket would slow down rusting of the axe.
I’m pretty sure this will not work for my splitting maul. I was just using the sledgehammer side to sink some angle iron in the ground to support a post on a deck I was working on and the blade side cut my leg without it barely touching me. I need to make a sheath for it now.
Let me suggest a Tenkara fishing kit for the survival pack ..... my entire kit weighs 4 ounces.... at first this may seem a stupid consideration but..... give it some thought..... yup....
awesome! cool idea, if you could maybe suggest how to make a belt loop for an axe that doesn't result in the axe hanging at a weird angle? I have not had great luck with trying to make one myself. I believe it is because I have a strap on my axe sheath that sits just under the butt of the axe.
I made one side of my loop higher and that seems to work well, but you need thicker leather. And I'm sure eventually it will fold over. Ooo, just jad an idea 💡 sew the loop on crooked 👍🏽
I don't want to seem negative it was a nice project but it seems like you could have definitely got a little closer to the edge of your leather piece. Not that the rest is wasted necessarily but I feel like you could have had a lot more usable piece left over. Thoughts?
I like how he described how to do it with absolute minimalist approach. Projects like this are great for helping beginners to focus on the ideas, theories and concepts of crafting without getting nervous about specifics and OCD traps like precise measuring.

Just thinking same thing!
Pls post pix

That’s pretty cool, Dan. Freakin awesome!
Wow, I made one a lot like that 46 years ago. Still have it on the axe

Awesome design and looks pretty easy to make. 👍👍
Excellent class on sheath making! Looking forward to some knife sheath projects like that!
Nice and simple but looks good. Thanks for the video. ATB, Gary CT Backcountry.
Thanks Dan ! I'm no leather expert but and the end of each cut maybe use a round punch for a hole at the end of the cut so it won't split later !
Perfectly simple. Thanks for sharing this information with us!
Very cool! You could even put like a toggle to keep the flap closed too
I have three axes so this is a Great project for myself to do...now to find a place to get the hide 😁

Quick and easy, as you say!
Thanks for sharing 👍🙏
Thanks again Dan for sharing a little knowledge!!
Great video Dan!! Could you please do a video on making a simple leather belt pouch?? Thank you!
This would be great. I’ve been wanting a belt pouch and was debating recycling an old worn out pair of jeans to make one.
This axe sheath is like a belt pouch, just make it a little smaller
That’s pretty cool !!
Nice and easy project!
Excellent demonstration. Thank you!
Awesome quick and easy
Cool project, that axe needs some TLC
very well spoken Descriptive clear in precise. I bet you're a dad 😂. for real though awesome video and a great teacher thank you
Very nice brother, thank you.

Post a pic. Sounds v cool.
Great video very interesting
Great project!
This video made me a subscriber🌸
Wicked awesome!!!
Hi Dan.. Really super informative video. Thank you. ATB. Nigel
head and handle need some love too
Good project. Thanks
Sent over from Corporal's Corner. Subscribed,
Could do you a video on a simple leather belt pouch?
Nice sheath, Thank you
Great beginners sheath!
I like it.
Kewl. I'm doing it for my hawk tomorrow.
Nice !
Nice Dan, I should be making a lot of these. I have lots of axes. Take care.
Thank you !!!
Nice man!
Alright kids , grab your axes and get busy
nice and easy
subbed from corporals corner. He gave you a shout out in his video upload today.
I think I got the shortened version that didn't include the stitching bit.
Still good though

I've been taking apart old tool pouches for leather work. So far they've been working great.
dont advertise that, or the save the nauga protesters will be after your butt lol
Thank you. I have never even heard of an S needle before. I wonder if a light coating of oil on the inside of the pocket would slow down rusting of the axe.

Nice job. Is that axe just used for splitting? It looked like it could use a good sharpening.
pretty good video, did you have your mother sew it for you
Let me suggest a Tenkara fishing kit for the survival pack ..... my entire kit weighs 4 ounces.... at first this may seem a stupid consideration but..... give it some thought..... yup....
Show us the stitching! Cool vid thanks!

@@beinghuman3225 that could work. Thanks!

I call this style of sheath a wallet sheath
Did you cut up your leather couch? Seems like a lite ounce leather.
They have a new invention out in the last few years. It’s for measuring things they call it a measuring tape lol
I like how he described how to do it with absolute minimalist approach. Projects like this are great for helping beginners to focus on the ideas, theories and concepts of crafting without getting nervous about specifics and OCD traps like precise measuring.
Where can one purchase this marvel of technology?
@@LukeC3 only the military has access to that type of tech. It hasn't even been passed down to engineers yet.
@@beinghuman3225 dang it. They always get the good stuff
Sheath is the last thing that axe needs. Needs a new handle, needs some linseed, needs to be steel wooled with balistol, probably needs sharpening too
Where can I learn to sew for bushcraft and leather working?
That was very simple, would like to try. Where can I get sheets of leather. Alan Rice
If you didn't have leather or animal hide, what other materials could you use? Thanks for the cool video 👍🤙🤙🤙
Mantap lanjutkan bang
Why are the "likes" not counted?
Thank you! I know your time is valuable but... I was soooo waitin on the stitchin part and you totally skipped that part!!!
Look into the "saddle stitch"
you can just google " how to saddle stitch leather by hand " and that should get you all the information you were missing.
Any recommendations on where to buy that leather?
this is the first video ive saw from you in a while. i dont know if you were taking a break or if the youtube algorithm is screwing you??
👍
Comment for the algorithms 🤣
Thank you. Axe sheath for dummies. This dummy heading to Tandy leather.
Need some oil on that handle.
Hey bubba, I'm not getting any of your notifications
OIL THAT AXE HAFT
Wouldn't duct tape be easier?

I LIKE::: but MINE has to have a WELT
