Not complaining about the video. I haven’t done one, so “he who lives in glass houses...”. My feeling is that the 7300 is the Icom competitor for the 590. The price classes are very close. The 7610 is much more expensive than the other two.
You keep tuning the SSB signal slightly off-frequency. That affects the audio as well.

Everything comes down to performance versus cost = value. I've been a dx'er for 55 years, primarily cw. I can do it with an entry level rig or the most expensive rig. I don't need a 2nd receiver or a band scope, although they might be nice to have and play with. At the end of the day, everyone develops their own opinions, and for whatever reasons they think suits them. I've had my TS-590SG for 3 years and it can do everything I want and expect it to do. I'm 100% satisfied with it. What more could I ask for?
I agree, the TS-590 series is one heck of a radio for the money.

Unfortunately I live in a townhome complex and a good antenna is impossible and the local rfi s5. Great to hear how a good station sounds. I have a Ts590 and have always thought it was an excellent radio for a modest price.
I own a 590s and even though in the video it brings more noise in the signal audio on both ssb and cw is much stronger in the 590 than the 7610. Adjusting the filters and you can improve upon the 590 audio. Use the CW Tune too. It shows the 590 has better audio than the 7610, which is not what I think the author was trying to show. Maybe I'll stick with my 590s!

There used to be a saying in amateur radio, that if you only had $100 to spend for your whole station, spend $1 on your transmitter, $9 on your receiver and $90 on your antenna. It wasn't to be taken literally, but was supposed to illustrate how seriously you should take the building blocks of your effort.
I am a new 7610 owner, a subscriber and I like your videos; and this is another good one. I am confident these two radios aren't being shopped against each other. 7300 v 590s, sure.
I like the IC-7160 much better for the receive quality and audio as for one the noise level is much cleaner and the voices are more legible because of the lower noise level .Even CW is cleaner even with low just above the noise level . For me the TS-590S is a nice radio but it does have a lot to be improved on for me to even think of buying one . 73s and thanks for the comparison .

The elusive IC-7160. This is a unicorn. I'm so surprised there are so many comments here. I'm sure none of you own let alone seen an IC-7160 in the flesh. It's such a discrete build that Icom has even badged it in the video as an IC-7610 to conceal this masterpiece of fine Japanese engineering. Was really great to watch this, you can clearly tell this is the upgraded IC-7160 model you can't even Google for information. Great post.

is the Pre-Amp on the Icom off? It's on at the 590 correct?
I like your vids, thanx. You do have the 590 narrowed up on SSB, especially the low end. You are at 2.4KHz soft on the 7610. So the 590 sounds a bit pinched. Unless you change the menu, the 590 automatically will employ the pre-amp above 7Mhz as I recall. This will also increase background noise a bit over a rig operating w/o the pre-amp.. I have no problem comparing any radio regardless of cost. So this is a fair comparison. 73
Among my SDR rigs, I have 3 x Flex rigs and 2 x IC-7300's. I prefer setting up the display to show the carrier frequency properly on the signal of an SSB station - not plonked in the middle of the signal which is essentially wrong. You can do it with the 7610 and 7300, so the carrier is on the left edge of the signal when using USB, and on the right edge when using LSB. That is where the carrier is, not in the middle which Icom default the setting to.
How do you change this?
Push and hold EXPD/SET, go to menu item CENTRE TYPE DISPLAY and touch. Choose CARRIER POINT CENTRE (ABSOLUTE FREQUENCY) Then exit.
John K i did not know you can change that. I dislike having SSB show up in the center as if it was AM which would drive me nuts.
Your more recent comparison videos comparing the Kenwood 890 and Icom 7610 answer the issue raised by some comments about an uneven comparison. Those videos are nice also ----- well done on all of these videos.
Never figured I would find a comparison between these two rigs, I have a TS-590SG never opened , totally new in box and am looking forward to using it, just moved where I can have antennas now. Would love to have a 7610 but that’s a good bit of money for me

I have seen the unit you can buy to give you a receive only antenna jack functionality on the 7300, in the design you lose the antenna tuner, which is a problem for some.
I however just built my version of that unit with full support for both the tuner and the receive only functionality and more! Look for the plans/part-list soon on the 7300’s Yahoo forum.
Parts are interesting enough almost 100% available at Amazon. 1 proprietary tweak is all that’s needed. Some of the added benefits is RF shielding and a bypass switch.
I will make a few when the design is 100% complete, parts are around 20$ retail.

I would also like to know how you can compare radios if the pre-amp on the 590 is switched on ,that will increase the noise level.

I have always been a Kenwood Fan... Since I was licensed in 1989 and a friend gave me a TS520SE that needed repair for $100,00 easy fix so it was a good investment. Then I purchased a TS 440 Sat and loved it except that it never remembered the frequency that you were on when switching between bands. Later upgraded to the TS 450 SAT and really liked the radio and decided to stick with Kenwood and a few years ago at Dayton bought the TS590S AT , and yes I did like the radio...a great radio. Guess what?....Just this 1st weekend of June 2019 my wife bought tickets at our local hamfest and she won a ICOM IC 7610...wow what a coincidence seeing your video of the radios that I have. The IC 7610 is an awesome radio and yes I love the display and all of the other features it has. So now for what happwns next. The 440 has been mobile as well as the 450, and bothe worked well although a little big for the vehicles. The 590S At will now go mobile in the RAM 1500 mostly because of the LCD display will be easier to read than the vacuum florescent display of the 440 or 450 radios. A seperation kit for the 590 would be nice but the RAM has a large dash area that is just fine for putting a lot of stuff on top. I recommend you to compare the 7610 vs TS 890 S the KENWOOD have better filter the only thing the 7610 the menu is much easier than the TS 890s but the audio on the KENWOOD TS 890S is much better both are good radio

Would be nice to see your Rx adjustment ( also with Rx Equalizer ) on the ts590s what looks very narrow adjusted and Premap is on in this test
But anyway i have both ts590s and the older Icom 7600 I would also confirm 7600 or 7610 But the best recipient is really my old Yaesu FT847 :) Have fun its a great hobby we share

How a transciever A/B comparison becomes more usefull?
- Use external, equal loudspeaker, on each transciever.
- Switch each 5 second, between A and B transciever.
- Switch during the same station is talking.
- Use the same settings on each transciever (BW, GAIN, FILTER...)
- Cut out, to search stations on the video.
- Write the mode for this video in the content; SSB; CW....
May be you find some more facts?

TS-590SG and SDRPlay as a panadapter and sub-receiver are doing a good job. If I had enough money to spend on the radio, I would buy 7610 :-) Best 73! MXmas!

It is like comparing apples with pears! TS-890S vs. 7610 would be the same class.
Though this video is a few years old, I found it still valuable. BUT!!!...my peeve here is, not tuning directly onto the SSB stations' direct TX frequency--that "Donald Duck" sound is beyond fatiguing for me (personally). Another (minor) one is, not using/demonstrating wider filters. I understand you dabble in contesting, but myself, outside of CW contests, I'm a rawchew op, as well as an eSSB/AM enthusiast/SWL'er. So I want to hear the receivers opened wide, more than not. 😉
Now, many years later as more and more radio receiver comparisons flood UA-cam, the content creators of videos continue to tune slightly off frequency--why do most still miss this critical point?? And they use the standard narrowest bandwidth filter available...(blahhhhh)
Now, I MUST give you an standing ovation for doing the audio comparison PROPERLY!!!--actually took to my feet and clapped loudly 😂. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many creators are STILL using a microphone near the tranceivers' BUILT-IN speaker to make a "comparison of the receiver audio" --WTH!!!!!...are they serious?!!...wait, umm, yea they are. 🙄😒

It appeared to me that you had the icom rf control turned back just a little. Receive on the icom was less noisy due to this rf control.
icom has slightly more distorted audio, yet clearer to understand

Sorry, I have just seen your comment. Boy that is a tough decision. I am normally a Kenwood guy but I do really enjoy the 7610 and for the current price it would be hard to pass up!

The first (stronger) signal the 590 was a fair bit better. On some of the weak SSB signals the 7610 was significantly better, some were a toss up.
CW, the 7610 was a fair bit better.

Depends. Do you need a second receiver? Do you want a panadapter? It isn't if you are just comparing the receivers. The TS-590 is pretty good. I've been without a second receiver for a couple of years, and I really miss it when working split dx.
this is a tough call for me audio wise as the bands seems to vary almost constantly, at times I can understand the 7610 slightly better and then other times the 590 is slightly better ...overall to me the 590 sounds like it has a slightly higher noise floor but it could be the EQ settings or just the difference in speakers....cw audio the win goes to the 590 ...I think lol, would be interesting to see these radios in a noisy field day side by side in action to see which ones performs the best...I have the icom 7300 and ive had the 590sg and cant decide which one is best, sometimes the 7300 picks up electrical noise from lights etc , i just added a line isolator which cured most of it..... though for the price of the kenwood they should include the TXO and voice board as standard, this makes the 7300 a better value out of the box
I think its time kenwood put out a mid priced radio...They Did its the ts890S mite trade up to that one from my 7610 but im
happy with the 7610 real dual trx the kenwood only, one costs 3500 usd but it looks and feels very high quality
On the Kenwood the pre is on, on the Icom is Off. What test is this??????
Replied to a couple other comments that noticed this too, In first couple tests I grabbed from the footage yes It was on. I had hours and hours of it and accidentally grabbed some footage with it on. My mistake and my apologies. 73

Yeah slightly off frequency and preamp on the kenwood, which makes the comparison really hard! I was really keen for the 7610 but at this price I'll go for a 7300 and an amp :D
Unfortunately I did not catch the pre amp footage until I posted the video, I had tons of it with it off but was tired an not paying attention editing. And youtube wont let you replace the video. The 7300 is not a bad option at all, if your not contesting or want the RX antenna capabilities its actually a very good radio. I am still debating on keeping mine as a backup.
Get that and the amp and you will be pleased.

Good test, but probably you uploaded it at too slow audio bitrate. Beside this, it is worth on CW to keep the same VFO and CW Pitch frequency.

Pretty amp doesnt affect the reciever quality. If you cant tell the Icom IC-7610 has better receive then you are not listening.
The 2 radios are not even in the same class. Compare 7610 to 990. Granted 2022 now.

A little unfair of a comparison for starters. I don't want to take away from all the useful videos you have done to cover the 7610 but this may not be your best work. For starters your BW on the 7610 was at 250...not so on the 590. Your CW tone freq was not matched on both radios. I am not sure how this effects the passband on the 7610 yet but I do know it impacts the 590 significant;y. I also notice that you are not leveraging the rx eq on the 590 which is a bit unfair as well.
The guy just wants justification that the 7610 was a mandatory purchase to his station.
Yeah the fish finder, but a good RSP2 can solve that problem alongside the 590 :)
My next purchase will be the 890, both worlds of the 7610 and 590 with even better technology.

Horrible test for receiver!!! The audio on 7610 was warmer and more pleasant BUT the 7610 needed preamp 1 to be ON to equal s meter and sensitivity levels!! not a realistic test,,,, S1 on icom was an s 5 on the kenwood....

surely you need ears to listen to a week signal, dont believe you need a scope to hear week signals, maybe if you tuned across the band at a slower rate you might hear the week signals that you talk about.
Kenwood has slightly better sensitivity Icom has the quieter receiver.. Its a wash.I wish you didn't run the preamp on the kenwood. It made it more the noisy radio..Amazing a radio with a 1400 dollar price can equal one more than double the price. Of course your paying 1600 extra bucks for all that eye candy which is awesome And yes I own both.

I just wish Kenwood would come out with something comparable to this. Pretty big gap between the 590 and the 990.

Much nicer to look at the 7160 than the 590. Has many more bells and whistles, fun to operate. Performance is not everything. Having a good screen to use is more important in my book.

Please when you do a comparison on SSB tune the radio on frequency because what you just demonstrated didn’t sell me either radio. It’s not a true sound of how the station on the other end actually sounds like, really you are doing an injustice to both radios. These weak signals everyone’s talking about pulling out of the noise is great now but what is going to happen when the sunspot cycle starts up and peaks? The signal that you can barely hear now is going to be S9 and a S9 signal now will be 30-40 dB over. Did Icom and Yaesu consider that when designing these radios? If not there will be a lot of unhappy hams out there experiencing front end overload, and side rejection of signals on either side of center frequency is going to be a big, big problem. Just my take, been a ham here for 43 years and my first rig was a Kenwood TS-520, first contact was made in April 1977 on 40 meters in the novice center band, man what a thrill that was. 73 KB8ZF.
