Great review. I am wondering if Danvers is catfishing Hank, pretending to be the Russian fiance. She referred several times to fantasy football on her phone, but we never see it. Assuming that everything in True Detective is for a purpose, I'm wondering if Danvers is getting back at Hank. Hank used to be police chief, so he must have been demoted to a regular cop, which explains why he tries to undermine everything Liz does.
I have wondered the same!!! Hopefully it’s true! But still wonder why she’s so lenient with him and doesn’t properly discipline him for insubordination.
I agree -- plus this idea she's on Tinder, but all her Tinder dates are out of town? Sounds like she is making it up. @@courtneynia
I think Pete could be behind it as a non-harmful way to get back to his father.
i like that!
Knowing that from the first info we got about this season that no one from the previous ones would be working on it, I only ever expected a highly produced fan-fiction, and I like it as that.
Anyone not just having fun with a story from the same "universe" and instead are comparing every aspect incessantly, set themselves up to fail from the start.
The 6 episode run is showing its effects. The writing is sometimes very immersing and emotional, then others it is rushed and repetitive.
With only two episodes left, they really need to lean into the themes that set them apart rather than are similar, if they want to have any sort of identity otherwise the whole thing falls flat.
The rose petals on the camo sheets had me rollin'. Somebody got me a set of the pillowcases as a joke on time. They still didn't explain the phone hack, lol.
8:31 you are so right, Steve. Why was Navarro even visiting Rust's mom? Who the heck was gonna eat all that food if Rust's mom wasn't expecting anyone?? That scene took me right out of the episode.
i had no idea it was Rust's mum!
@ninagrierson-jones5812 oh yeah! So the Wacky Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man is Rust's dad, Travis! I can't remember the mom's name, I'm sorry. Fiona Shaw is the actress.
@@ninagrierson-jones5812because it’s not. Travis is Rust’s dad.
She had people there right before Navarro was there. They're probably still in the house. Rose is one of the killers. That's why she dodged Navarro's questions. They are a group. Probably the Turtles.
@GregorySnipe Well, Navarro is dumb. Why not just ask her bestie Rose about the spiral? Rose indicated she knew about the spiral. Ugh, this show is so frustrating!
If you go back and watch episode one the exit sign also goes out slightly after the normal lights. Typically, these would have a battery good for 90 minutes so cutting a generator wouldn’t knock them out.
So fast Steve! Amazing! Horrible Hank isn’t very smart lol. I felt a little sorry for him but not much and I did laugh to myself with the flight attendant at the airport.
I think Navarro is connected to the spirit world not a mental illness. I agree about the Wheeler incident tying in to season 1. It would be epic if Rust came back.
I agree with everything you said except the jump scares. I love horror but I feel like it’s overdone in this show. The story and eery setting works great but the horror element seems slightly cheesy and takes away the power of the story for me. Something horrific is going on here obviously and I want to see them tie it up effectively like they did in season 1
I agree about the music. .
I really like this show and your breakdowns are much appreciated. This last episode was really good there is a lot of dark stuff going on in the personal lives of these characters. I agree with you, original score would have hit harder on that suicide scene not sure what Rose was all dressed up for cooking a feast for one. Unless she is a member of the cult lol good job man.
Quick comment on the music. I'm not a Billie Eilish listener so TBH i didnt know that song during the sister scene was her (nor the title until watching your reviews). The song's lyrics work with the scene imo. Maybe if it was a metal song/band that 90% of the population didn't know of I'd feel the same way 🤷🏽♀️
likewise, i didnt know it was billie eilish either
get a grip lmao this show makes season 2 look solid
Theory that Rose is deceased and only Navarro sees and talk with her
Kind of messes up the message of "no one cares about Indigenous women" when the Coast Guard finds Navarro's sister's body in less than a day ✨️IN THE OCEAN✨️
But were they out looking for her when nobody knew she went missing?
@toriboy25 someone sent me a link to an article on how the coast guard would find someone really quickly there, because they found one person once quickly. Hmmm
I mean they *could* have found her quickly by accident. And honestly we don’t have the luxury of waiting episodes for that.
Nobody else heard the call and why did they tell her like that on the phone. I dont believe legally they can tell you like that... something odd about it or just unresearched. If those Coasties were around Dexter would have been half an episode
Those guys are referred to as nomads several times, and they’re nomads because they’re following caribou herds are and hunting them. That’s why there are antlers everywhere, not because it is a connection to season 1.
its been confirmed season 4 is a direct sequel to season 1, there are nods to the first season all through this season, including the antlers
@@ninagrierson-jones5812 Agreed. But I think the “nods” to S1 are exactly that - acknowledgements that we are in the same universe. At most the mention of the Tuttle family is a reference to wealth and the evil that men do with no consequences as in S1.
I disagree about Rose, she mentions she was an important professor in her past. What kind of professor? This might be relavent in future episodes. 🤔
As much as this episode leaned into horror tropes, this was the one where I really felt things are not going the supernatural route. Among other things, the electricity being cut in both videos seems to indicate the same perp with the same MO.
If Julia saw a ghost of her mother laying prone, does that mean she saw her murdered? There's a theory out there that Navarro might have a deadly alter ego of sorts we have yet to see and may have deeply affected Julia.
.yea i need to know how this ends, really like the performances, the only thing im on the fence about is the cult having such a strong background in a town rust has been without him coming across it, idk
I disagree on the Billie Eilish song. I was taking in the scene and listening to the words of the song at the same time. It was incredibly sad. It hit for me! I’m really enjoying this season. It’s different and I’m here for the horror aspect of it.
hey happy it worked for you! :)
Awesome review! How did I miss the white noise transition -- that's an amazing catch. Also totally agree with you on Billie Eilish. It's too much and distracted from the scene.
means so much thank you!
Thanks for the review. I am thinking Peter is involved somehow.
It’s weird that sudently Liz is the believer
I love your channel and your content, long time subscriber 😊I do wanna say I loved your recap but I noticed we didn't get much of your own thoughts on the episode, personally I hated it, the fact that they made no real progress in the case and that they are now seemingly adding paranormal stuff into the story (I was SO hoping it would be realistic). Plus some of the character behavior seemed untrue to their character. Just wanted to hear more of your thoughts! Great video though!
Yes! Less recap, more review. Sometimes Steve calling a show on its bullshit is what gets me to make the most of my hate watching (looking at you Sharp Objects!). I have said for two weeks that I am giving up on this season and yet I keep watching it.
How does the teacher ( geologist) know that no one goes in Tsalal station, and no one leaves? He said he's a geologist, what they're doing is not his expertise...but MINING would be...seems like Hank in 1st episode is familiar with Tsalal, toolin' around like he knows the place Tsalal station has haircut day, cleaning ladies and delivery guy so how does geology teacher KNOW that the scientists are so isolated? Are these guys sworn to secrecy and celibacy? Oliver hunter guy creepy and dangerous...how did his girlfriend know he was looking to NOT be found? What more is she not saying? Episode 1 when when Liz is showing the tongue lines to Pete, she points out the marking on it are like the ones on the indigenous woman they found frozen a year earlier...hmm...that's weird. Sounds like they need to have support groups for not listening to the dead. Pete tells Liz that when he spoke to Clark's mother in Ireland and asked if she'd heard from him,she said he's dead to her. He apparently must've been expected to give up your life to Tsalal station, and Lund, the founder...was Oliver Tagaq the enforcer,to keep the guys on point? Was that why Annie was supposed to keep their relationship quiet? Oliver wasn't a scientist so he could mess around, and he "left" Tsalal just before Annie was killed...huh,not at all fishy.
Agree with everything u said about this episode
I’m really feeling like I need to binge season 1 again so I don’t miss these connections. I’m a huge Billie Eilish fan but I do get what you are saying about that moment. I don’t know though, I kind of liked it. Awesome review as usual Steve. You’re the first video I watch after an episode so I can see what all I didn’t catch lol.
me too, i noticed the nods to the first season but i need to watch it all again so its fresh in my mind
I must be in the twilight zone because this show is a complete mess. The writing, wooden acting (even Jodie who I love), cgi.. more like a b Netflix show. And not, it's NOT because they're women..
fwiw i didnt know it was anoter billie eilish song but if they were gonna pick a song like that it kinda makes sense to tie it to the theme music imo
So if I get put in a mental facility, I can just walk out at any time. What is the point then.I think somebody let her out though
You can’t. It’s just a plot hole. There are lots of plot holes surrounding the whole sister situation
@@Tender.fiddles We might find out more
It depends on whether you were admitted voluntarily or not. You can leave (against medical advice) unless you were admitted via a physician or coroner emergency certificate which would hold you for involuntarily for 72 hours. Juiles went in voluntarily
@@sarahsarahsarah9093 Okay sounds right.I guess Navarro didn't know that because she was rightfully pissed.
@@Loch1210 The desk clerk at The Lighthouse did inform Navarro that it was a voluntary facility. She clearly did not realize that or didnt remember she was told that when she checked in her sister.
@4:25 you just want an organ playing in the background
missed ur sly comments
EDIT: I AM ENJOYING THE SEASON, PLEASE DON'T USE THIS COMMENT AS YOUR SPACE TO BASH.
It feels like almost too much story is left to resolve given the remaining number of episodes. Here's my tally:
- Presumably, Clark is in the caverns, but why?
- Where's Tabaq?
- How did the scientists die?
- Who murdered Annie?
- What did Annie find?
- Polar Bear, Oranges, "She's Awake", Corpse Mom: Hallucinations or hauntings?
- What's up with the water?
- What's up with the stillbirths (yes, presumably the water)?
- How did Liz's husband and son die?
- Why is Liz the guardian of Leah?
- What's up with Hank's mail order bride arc? I saw a theory that it's Liz trolling.
AGREED!!!!
i agree there is way too much going on to wrap up in 2 episodes . the first season is my favorite then the 3rd season then the 2nd the 4th might be the worst
In order:
We’ll find out why Clark is in the caverns soon…literally the biggest plot point of the whole season
Same with Tagaq
Should get an explanation once those bodies have been processed in anchorage
We’ll definitely get some Annie K closure too…she’s def significant
Polar Bears, Oranges, etc might never be outright answered but it’s supernatural stuff so like…not a big deal imo, just watch the Shining
Water has been polluted by the mine
Stillbirths are presumably because of the fcked up water
Jake and Holdens death will be revealed…too much plot around them, we’ll definitely get an answer
Liz is Leah’s guardian because she was married to Jake, Leah’s father
And lastly, Hank is weird lol idk
We only have two episodes! There is no way they finish this up in any way that will satisfy the audience, even the people who say this show is soooo amazing.
It’s so annoying that you literally need to be mouth fed every single plot resolution. Please for once in your life have some sort of original critical thought.
I am enjoying the show. It is entertaining and that’s hard to find now.
Nice review, though a fart noise would've sufficed to describe this show...
wait arent there 3 eps left? i thought we were getting 7 eps this season...

Joel Montgrand officially became my 4rd husband after this episode
Think u had enough
@@paulcarpenter7844 lol. This is what happens when I don’t wear my glasses.
@10:15 - peter telling Kayla she should admit she never wanted a kid as important - important to what, and how? Season 1 had characters develop in a way that impacted the relationship between Rust and Marty which in turn impacted their ability to solve the crime mystery. Important pieces come together = satisfying resolution. Kayla not wanting a baby, and Peter already knowing it, changes what, and if so, how is that "what" important to the story? If this were a soap opera/telenovella, where relationship drama was the only point of the story, I suppose it could be as important as anything else. Here, do we even know what the crime is yet, such that far extended emotional side notes over half way through is anything less than a badly written, meandering story?
yes, plus Annie being a midwife and Liz attending a wake for a stillborn -- birth is important here
You’re viewing this in a naive and accusatory way. Obviously Peter was in a rush to start his own family given how bad his was. It’s all unfolding and EP5 really makes a point of it. Peter is desperate to grab onto any person that gives him the what his own father couldn’t
@@FaffyWaffel well, yes - if this were a soap opera episode written in 12 hours, having side characters squabbling about who wanted the baby would be perfectly sufficient. Not for anything worthwhile - reducing the (arguably) only sympathetic character into a boo boo baby who loves mommy stand in more than his wife and kills daddy is so stupid, the fact sophocles did it with more subtlety 2500 years ago says it all.
Ummm, so fast that I’m not sure I’ve even seen the episode your reviewing yet!
Fastest man on UA-cam!
WOO
It's true, detective as a series is pretty overrated period but this season's pretty terrible. Ill wait until it's finished and read up on how the story ends.
This isn't a HORRIBLE show, but the quality is like Law and Order SVU level, major broadcast network fodder. 8.7 is really difficult to wrap my head around.
8.7 is just a above an 8.5 B (average). there is way way worse out there and I dont think that is this.
@7:00 finding a reason to show your favorite actor smh
you know me to well
One things that’s bothering me about this show is the lack of any strong, sensible men. None of the cops, miners, or any town folk seem to give a damn about the deaths or finding out what happened. Most of the time they’re either a hindrance or loafers!
the young cop? The older cop? there are a few strong sensible men in it. We could say the same for the lack of strong sensible women in season one.
@@ninagrierson-jones5812The older cop is not strong or sensible. Neither is the young cop.
It's because it's a woke TV show made by woke social justice warrior feminist I mean literally everyone's talking about it in a negative light even me this is a god-awful show I'm just watching the review when I saw this so if you like strong men watch another show
Man I’m skeptical on how they’re gonna wrap this all up and it not be something supernatural/paranormal.
It will definitely be supernatural at this point. Half the people on the True Detective subreddit are convinced there were supernatural elements to season one, even after you show them interviews with the season one creators saying NOTHING SUPERNATURAL happened in season one. Ridiculous
This feels like a My Honor level of terrible, my friend.
I wish they had just made the movie Issa Lopez wanted to and didn't shoehorn True Detective elements into this.
We are four episodes in, and we still don't know what happened to Danvers' son Holden. My younger son almost died because of a drunk driver, so I'm scared this is what they will depict on screen.
i am pretty sure she crashed the car which killed them both- there are many hints to this so far.
@ninagrierson-jones5812 I think so too, like Steve pointed out - Danvers drives drunk all the time. If she killed her family driving drunk and continues to drive drunk, I hate Danvers. Full stop. People who drive drunk are TRASH. The guy who almost killed my son didn't stop, just kept driving. He ended up getting a YEAR in prison, and he was out in less than 6 months. My son had to be airlifted to Colorado because the doctors in Montana didn't feel they could reconstruct his face. We were there for 6 weeks and my son was in a medical coma for two weeks.
There aren't any redeeming qualities I see in Danvers.
This show has been disappointing to me. Not that much has really been happening and none of the characters are really that cool. They are all negative and depressing all the time..
The real mystery lies in how anyone can still say anything good about this show at this point.
If they just made a show called "Night Country" with no connection to True Detective, it might have worked better. But the fact that they took this story and made a half-assed effort to repackage it as True Detective makes it feel like a money grab.
Fucking A what a woke piece of trash this is
This show is just odd it's a very odd show it should not even be part of true detective not even enough episodes for the season 😔
This season is TERRIBLE
I’ve been trying to hang in there for this show, but I watched the first episode of “Mr & Mrs Smith” and it was so good, it made see how bad this season of True Detective is. Season 4 feels like one of those shitty Netflix shows that’s filmed in Denmark or Spain, and there’s a cop with new murders to solve that also tied to the missing girl decades earlier, but also that ancient nature thing that the town doesn’t talk about…🙄. The writing is bad, the acting is verging on melodrama, if Rust Cohle shows up, I’m gonna be mad, because it would be tarnishing season one and the character.
I gave up watching after the second episode, but I’m still watching your reviews.
hell yea!
Homie I like you but this show BLOWS
Think of how much they spent to film in Iceland! The Yellow King isn’t even that rich!
Leah’s graffiti is so ridiculously perfect; trying to use aerosol in subzero weather or any paint in those conditions is just silly. Fiona Shaw obviously has a nice wardrobe budget. Hahaha. Wasn’t Navarro going to spend Christmas Eve with her sister but instead is found at a very fancy Christmas Eve dinner?
Lastly the idea that there were 7 men at Tsalal and that Danvers hadn’t slept with any of them is truly paranormal!
Yes I love Steve so much but he is way too good to review such schlock. Omg the Reddit for this show is a nightmare.
You're out of your mind. This is the best season of this show.
