I think the rock would be the worst person to play Doc Savage. Dwayne Johnson only ever plays himself in his movies. He has a huge ego which is totally at odds with the character. Plus he's 52 now and getting a little old for the part. Having said that, it would be cool to see a Doc Savage movie come out.
Great topic. He was always a favorite of mine. I for sure thought Ron Ely was going to make a few more. That would have made a great weekly show. The Doc Savage Hour.
Doc Savage as far as Pulp Heroes go is 100% the G.O.A.T., The Shadow is a very strong 2nd.. As a major Pulp Heroes fan myself, I have many favorites, but Savage is for sure top dog. He's the Superman of Pulps, even has his own Fortress of Solitude! His personality totally gives me vibes of Clark Kent & Steve Rogers combined. I'm actually shocked the video narrator spoke about Doc Savage being part of a team without having also mentioned Doc's later Dynamite Comics run he together with The Avenger & The Shadow he formed Justice Inc. which was a 3 member pulp hero team. oh well, great video overall anyways!
I think Doc Savage novels were some of the first books I read as a kid, that and the Hardy Boys and later James Bond. The books were great I remember there was one about a Werewolf, The lost Oasis, Mountain Monster, Fortress of Solitude and the original Man of Bronze. I liked the character of "Monk" mostly because I have an odd build with short legs and a long torso with long "ape like" arms, much like Monk in the novels. A resurgence of Doc Savage's world would be great on the big screen, I remember the film and Ron Ely as the Man of Bronze and although I wish for a better version of the original story I don't know how I would handle Dwayne Johnson with Hair,...and I remember him as a young buck playing for the Calgary Stampeders before he went full on into wrestling.
Wasn't it established that Doc Savage had the strength of five men? Natural or not, that certainly feels superhuman. The gold flecks in his eyes also allowed him to hypnotize people quite easily. Again, pretty superhuman-sounding.
I read as many of the paperbacks as I could in the early 70's and still own a few The 1975 movie was terrible and if there is ever another movie is made I hope they treat the character's better than the first did Something's left out of the video concerning his gadgets were a telephone answering machine, live and recorded video surveillance of his headquarters and clothing with chemical heating coils in the lining
They didn't seem to know whether they were playing it straight or doing a parody, which is death for a movie. I think of the celebrated old pulp characters only Conan has gotten a movie that is respected. I guess if you count Sam Spade as one you have _The Maltese Falcon_ of course! One problem is that movie Conan, as great as he was, didn't seem to put as much focus on the "sophisticated intellectual" aspect of the character (and it was so iconic that it became definitive on film so unfortunately had the effect of probably killing it as a film character forever). I like that aspect that the old pulp heroes tended to have, and you can obviously see the influence of a character like Doc Savage on all sorts of subsequent characters. I like the idea of giving Savage a more muscular physique this time but I don't think Rock will bring the right energy.
Ely was OK, but someone far better would have been his co-star in 'Night of the Grizzly' - Clint Walker. Some of the pulp drawings looks as if they were modeled from Walker (even though he would have only been a child when they were done). The '75 movie almost ended any commercial value the character possessed; if Johnson is shoehorned into the role, it'll finish the job for good.
I agree Clint would have been great. He had the physicality and from everything I've heard about him he had the moral code. And apparently made some good wine
Both Marvel and DC Comics had licenced Doc Savage, I don't remember if Doc ever had crossovers with DC characters unlike Marvel where Doc interacted with their superheroes.
There was a time that Dwayne Johnson would have been a shoe-in for the role, he does have the look to a large degree (save the hair, of course), but his issues and ego have pretty much side-lined him to a large degree. A good example of this is Black Adam.
I played a Doc Savage character in a hero-based role playing game, years ago. My friends hated me; my character had no super-weaknesses because he had no superpowers. If Dwayne Johnson plays Doc, I desperately want to see the Fab Five they'd cast. Just take my ticket money, now. :)
Doc and the five are the original Super group . Without powers they're better than Batman and the Man of Bronze is far a better character than the Man of Steel.
Great video! Always loved this character.
I remember seeing the Ron Ely movie at the cinemas. Forget if I was still living in Owensboro, KY or Bettendorf, IA
Alan Ritchson, the guy that plays Reacher on the series, I think would make a good Doc Savage

James Bama drew the book cover shown at 1:38. He gifted me the #1 of 50 poster. Doc Savage was the man in my youth.
Finally! The Man of Bronze! Lester Dent Lives!
Great topic. He was always a favorite of mine.

I didn't forget. I have the movie. I never understood why there weren't more.
...And now I have the themesong from the film stuck in my head for the rest of the night.
Strange that I've always been aware of 'Doc Savage', but (until now) known nothing about him.
Doc Savage is not superhuman put peak human being. The pinnacle of what a human can become and continue to be and evolve.
Chris Hemsworth would be great for this.

Olympic diver / swimmer from Florida.

So basically the first batman.

Read a lot of the paperbacks in the 1960's.
He created the Venture Brohers as well.
Sounds like Buckaroo Bonsai barrowed a bit from the Doc.
Have no fear...
So, he is enhanced naturally but not entirely superhuman?
he's basicly captain america and batman rolled into one.
Both Marvel and DC Comics had licenced Doc Savage, I don't remember if Doc ever had crossovers with DC characters unlike Marvel where Doc interacted with their superheroes.
DC tried to launch a pulp-style line of comics with Doc Savage, the Avenger, the Spirit, Rima the Jungle Girl and Batman. Alas, it was not successful.
There was a time that Dwayne Johnson would have been a shoe-in for the role, he does have the look to a large degree (save the hair, of course), but his issues and ego have pretty much side-lined him to a large degree. A good example of this is Black Adam.
Thanks so much for this comprehensive video. I've always been intrigued by this character since seeing the film as a kid in the 70's.
Art and covers of a comic is more interesting than charecter itself.
Wasn't there talk that The Rock to play this character?
Man dont let him ruin the SAVAGE DOC
He would turn it into a ego masturbation fest...
Oh, please don't.
Arnold as well. Back in 90s.
Killan Lutz can play him.

Dwayne Johnson was also supposed to be in Johnny Quest but it never happened. Still waiting.

John carter inspired superman, i never heard of savage, it is my first time knowing about him
Please dont let JJ Abrams anywhere near Doc Savage. JJ SUCKS and is a hack.
Wait! WHAT?! THERE WAS A 1950s FLASH GORDON TV SERIES??!! 😮
Perhaps an enhanced human like Batman.
Dwayne Johnson as Doc Savage is a Good Ideal.
No not the rock
@@billymciver3101 Why Not?
Says no one
Dwayne Johnson is an overrated and overused goof!
The character didn’t inspire Superman
