  • Since 2018, Maya has earned five different titles in the sport of Rally including her Master (RM) title and Rally Advanced Excellent title (RAE). Now, we have our sights set on her Rally Championship, but along the way, I want to help other people learn and grow within the sport!
Here are the top five tips I have for training the spins for AKC Rally Master class which are found in signs 312, 313, 319, and 320. Big thanks to LL Corgis for suggesting this topic! Hope you enjoy!

About Maya: A nine year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Maya loves carrots, broccoli, pasta, and turkey treats the most. She’s also particularly enjoys the beach (but not swimming), playing tug of war, learning new things, competing in Rally and Obedience, and taking up the entire bed at night.
About Kayla: I began training dogs in 2008, starting with raising puppies to be future service dogs and fell in love with the human-canine connection. Over the last several years, I’m thankful to have had the chance to help train service dogs, therapy dogs, compete in Obedience and Rally, and introduce people to the dog sports I love.
Thank you for watching this video! It would mean a lot to me if you subscribed and joined Forest, Maya, and me on all of our future canine-related adventures!

I love watching you with your Corgis! I’m getting ready to start rally classes. I have “heel” down. But I’ve accidentally trained my girl to automatically sit when I stop walking when I’m a heel position. How can I train this out of her?

I love your ideas and presentation. I have a border collie, and she’s focused and quick when I have a treat with me. But when we go to competition , you would think it’s the most boring thing in the world to her. We just got her Excellent title, and are ready to start working on the RACH. Any suggestions for making this more exciting and engaging for her. I am kind of stiff in the ring. I know I need to loosen up. I think it’s nerves 😊. Thanks for any advice you can think of.

I just use signals for the spins since you start out teaching with the signal anyway.

Do you have a suggestion for stay stand then downs at a distance? My dog tends to inch forward. I have platforms that I have been training with. That or other ideas would be nice.😊

Hi Mel! It's a very common problem! I've trained a dog with this issue and did a couple things:
First, I trained a "back down" behavior, meaning they fold down with their momentum going backward rather than stretching their front legs out into a forward-moving down.
Second, I practice with a broad jump board in front of them to discourage the forward momentum and create muscle memory for that folding down motion.
Third, I set up treats behind them in training when I leave and then once they do the down on cue, I release them to their reinforcement.
Maybe I'll make a video about this! I think it would be easier to understand visually. Thanks for watching!
