The "sorry" comment is a problem of translation. When you are saying "Sorry for you loss", for example, you are not apologizing. We have a word for apologies and another for the sorrow over something. So we say "Sinto muito pela sua perda", when you want to be sensitive for a loss, but we say "Desculpa" when we are apologizing for a mistake.

LOL the part about saying we are going, but don't. I am a living proof that we just hate saying no or just disappointing someone. About the main meal, yeeesss, lunch :) Whatever job you get in Brazil, the company gives you one hour for lunch (it's the law). So most companies usually have their own cafeteria or you get a monthly ticket to eat a good lunch and still have half an hour to rest before getting back to work. So when you refuse a kiss from a Brazilian do it with a smile and just tell him that you feel uncomfortable that we will understand. Because if you do that with a serious face it might gives us the impression that you didn't like us and don't want to be friends with us or that you are just a rude person.

In brazil we use sorry only if we actually have blame on what happened, for empaty we have another word wich is "pesames" (condolence).
