  • This time we head out to Stillwater Reservoir in western ADK. We wanted to redo our ill-ish fated trip from two years ago and stamp a better trip on top. I think we accomplished that. Come check out our windy trip and see one of the most spectacular island camping sites i've ever seen.

    Aaahhh Stillwater. Bin thar many times. Always windy, always in your face - either way... Go up to Trout pond on the north shore and portage up to Salmon then to the top, and either pull over some beaver dams or take the trail to Whitchhopple. There is a rock outcrop on the east end - nice place to tent camp, breeze keeps the biggzzz blowt back into the woods. From there either bushwack up to Beaver Dam Pond or take the stream (over several beaver dams). There is the remains of an olde adirondack camp there, the fireplace was still standing (mostly) the last time I was there. If you are lucky, you might find some very olde bail top pop bottles. The date of mfr is molded into the bottle bottoms, late 1800's. Leave them there for others to find. Found your channel from Craig who dwellas.

      Hey thanks man! My first time to stillwater i ended up staying up in big burnt lake/trout lake area. I think it was site 15 up there. I didn't yet know about the old "red horse" trail there. That's a big one on my list in the future. Just like you said- up through salmon and witchopple, but I was thinking about finishing up in clear lake instead of beaver dam. All good options for the future trip though, eh?

      @@broadsidebarnes My friend I was with's father had a hunting cabin on Clear before it became a wilderness area. He was born near there and had canoed every adk puddle big enough to float a canoe on. Guido the Guide! I met him thru work. I had been an adk'er before that, too, but never deep in. Many more deep's since, too.
      There yoosta be a lean to near the bottom of Salmon, built there by Ranger Terry Perkins to stay in while he worked his trap lines, but some SOB burned it down. We stayed there several times before... There was also a lean to just above Trout on the trail, but we never stayed there. That paddle back OUT was always Brutal!
      Another Brutal paddle Out is Long Lake. We stayed at the Deep Hole lean to where the Cold comes into the Racquette, and also at the Calkins Brook one up the Cold. There is a trail on the south side you can get to by canoe that goes up to the Shadduck Clearing Ranger station on the Northville - Placid trail. I have a pix of me standing by the Pine Point sign on that trail. Sadly, all Kodak... It would cost a fortune to have them all digitized...

      @@iamnobody9542 get those pics scanned a make a video, man lol. You're also calling out all the other trips i want to do too- I've had my eye on a long lake to axton landing, or tupper, for awhile too. Little kids keep me at about a 2 night max for the time being though. i cannot wait until I have the time to get out for several nights.

      @@broadsidebarnes Yes. Go thru to Axton. Coming back down Long lake is LONG and BRUTAL!! Mt Kempshall and the one opposite it make Long Lake like a wind tunnel! The SW prevailing winds shoot right down it to the NE.

      …also you said 34, but isn’t that site 14? Closed for bears last time I was there.

      @broadsidebarnes  Рік тому +1

      Nope it was def 34. It's an island site about a mile-ish from the launch

      Ha! Paul it is funny you said that... I thought it was site 14 also, I remember camping there and then it was closed for bears, but thank you broadside barnes for the video. it looks like a twin site of 14. Now I want to check out site 34. PauliG and I had a rough trip back one time in a 14 foot motor boat. You guys are great in the canoe ! Please keep sharing your vids.

    Nice video. Thanks for posting. I've been thinking about a trip on Stillwater so this was right up my alley. Seems like it's always windy - what time were you paddling going in and out? Did you get over to the other shore at all? How about power boats; did you see many? Thanks again.

      only saw maybe one or two party barges coming back in from the eastern edge. We hit the water this time at about 8 or so, and got back to the launch around 9 or 10 too. We ended up hugging the south shore and we eventually stopped at site 34 on the island bc it was just too brutal continuing into the wind. I have another video from two years prior though, where we went up the north shore and ended up weedling back into site 15. That was in September and the lake was glass from like 7AM to noon or so. My buddy and I kept wondering if there was ever a rhyme or reason to the wind there, but now we know to just account for it no matter what if we go here.
      Thanks dude! Much appreciated.

    I was gonna ask if they registered at camp site 34. Pisses me off when I register a certain site and then someone is already there. Then we have to go back to the ranger station and reregister at another site. Frustrating!

    You do Know you have to sign in at the Ranger Station and claim your spot before you head out. It would be a Bummer to paddle out and set up camp just to be told to leave.

    • @Xerkies

      That's good to know since I'll be going there. I'll go over there for questions.

      Just FYI- all primitive sites are first come first served. A ranger is never going to tell you to move your camp bc someone else "reserved" it. It's written plainly all over the DEC website. Signing in is a good thing to do, but no one is going to spank you for not. Also- people often have plans change and change sites. Don't sweat it.
