  • As dancers, we spend so much of our time focusing on the technique of the dance that we often miss out on one of the most powerful tool in our dance belts - EMOTION.
Maybe you've witnessed this before. You see a performance and the dancer has technique coming out of their pores, but there is something missing from their dance and it fails to connect with you on a deeper level.
Or how about this? You watch a dancer who keeps the movement simple but is just so full of joy or passion that you could watch them forever!
    Sound familiar?
Emotion is a universal way to connect within the dance, be it to the music or to our audience and there are so many ways we can infuse our dancing with emotion and theatricality.
In this video we will explore one of my favorite ways to fill your dance with deeper emotional content using a part of the body too often ignored in our dance practice - THE EYES.
They say the eyes are the windows to our soul.
So let's open those windows and dance through them!

There is no dance that "connects" to the audience more than bellydancing,
    So many pictures to paint,
So many ways to paint a picture,
The most memorable dances are the ones who move like a poet thinks,
(if that makes sense, its content, not just art but finesse, the more i try to describe it the more pretentious its going to sound lol, but its depth, more behind the dance than just learning the moves,
Sure you can't do that every time, you'd burn out, but for those times you want to leave a mark...)
I'm glad eyes are getting some attention, its easily the best way to connect with the audience,
And my fav part, I'm a sucker for eyes,

This is so beautifully stated! Yes! I totally see what you are saying and agree that there is so much more to this dance then just the movements... and the eyes are so very powerful!! Thank you for sharing.

9:15. Looking at your movements and expressions make me happy. And even before this video I’ve tried to use your style of engaging an audience with expressions. Thank you for being phenomenal.

Thank you so much for covering this, I wish it was addressed more in class. When I was performing my fellow dancers used to always tell me I looked "mad" when I danced, but it was because I was so focused on the choreography and execution of moves like you said. Even my teacher used to tease me about it, but we never worked on it in class. Honestly it made me alittle self conscious when I danced, but your video will help my dance tremendously. I'm very sensitive & emotional, empathic even, so I love the way a dancer can convey different emotions, & the face and eyes are so important. I'm using dance to work through some of my past traumas & letting things out in my choreography. 💗

oh thank you so much for making this video. I know for myself that recording while practicing this is a big part of making it more and more natural! The way you use your facial expression was what drew me in to your channel!! :D thanks so much for sharing. Funny enough I was about to ask for a video on facial expression, because you do it so well - we'd all benefit so much from learning your techniques for this subtle part of dancing - so keen on learning about eyebrows and smiles in the future! Love your work.

This was such a good class, Sahira! This is a subject not a lot of teachers talk about, at least in video classes I haven't heard it much (actually, not really ever!). I am so excited that you are going to have more videos on emotionality and theatricality in bellydancing coming up!

Glad it was helpful! I agree that it is too often glossed over or not even talked about in traditional classes. I'm excited to share more and will be uploading several longer videos to my Teachable studio soon!! (SahiraBellyDances.Teachable.com)
