This Microbe Accelerates Faster Than a Cheetah

  • One of the fastest animals in the world is actually a ciliate, a unicellular microbe. This little worm-like creature looks quite clumsy and chubby. And yet it is able to accelerate faster than most fast animals, including Cheetahs. Please meet Spirostomum ambiguum. This giant of the microcosmos uses its speed to communicate and to avoid predators in unexpected ways.
