  • I've been waiting to find this roll and get it out of storage to record. The song that's played at the end of The Shining! I want to say in the version from the movie, Al Bowlly sings "were you" instead of "with you" as is printed on the roll box. I've never seen another copy and this roll is perfect. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

    Sad how we all just threw these treasures away, history and all. If we keep doing this, then we will never see how we got by, had fun, worked or played, how we made romance and made families back in the bygone years.
    Erasing history is the perfect recipe to feeling fake and empty inside, so the next time you find something old, save it. Treasure it. Because these memories don’t last our entire lives, let alone forever

      That museum was the Antique Car & Treasure Museum in Stone Mountain, run by the late Bobby & Tommy Protsman. They also had numerous art glass hanging lamps, petroliana, arcade games, CocaCola memorabilia, as well as cars and pianos and organs etc. neat place but I never got to visit before it closed and was auctioned off by I *think* Randy Inman Auctions of Iowa in a massive two or three day auction in 2009. You can still see the individual lots and remaining instruments that were there at the end in the archived version of this auction on LiveAuctioneers.

      Might need to be a custom one so they can get the roll but still leave the OPs legs free to pump the piano (that’s how you put in dynamics in a regular player piano; electrified players just bang out the tune flatly unless they’re original “expression pianos” or “reproducing pianos” which have systems to automatically add dynamics from coding in the margins of special rolls they play .

    • @andrewbarrett1537
      @andrewbarrett1537 Рік тому

      I can recommend a setup like I use for recording live broadcasts of my piano playing. I bought a heavy duty photography lighting stand with heavy duty friction lock adjustments from a local camera shop (I think Samy’s Camera). This stand has a long boom arm which extends out 4’ or so and can also be height adjusted fairly tall (like close to 7’ I think, which is more than needed for this purpose). The boom arm has another heavy duty friction rotation lock joint on it which can work as a counterweight. I have a special plastic smartphone holder which is designed to clamp onto a pipe, I think maybe a 1/2” or 3/8” pipe, and it clamps onto the free end of the boom arm. This is after I have the stand adjusted up high above my head. Thus the stand can hold my smartphone in place aimed down at the entire keyboard to watch my hands while I play which is good for live broadcasts and also tutorials. For here, the boom arm could be adjusted to hold the camera or phone in place between the person pedaling the piano and the roll, to get a good steady hands free view of it, plus allow their legs and hands to be free to “interpret” the roll and put in dynamics. Finally, a high quality microphone could be put on a short stand behind the piano soundboard (like a studio setup) and wired into a computer running good audio software (like Audacity to name one program), in order to capture the best piano sound including all dynamics 😃

When I opened up the package, the roll looked terrible. The box was completely destroyed, and the flanges were both just as bad. But the paper roll was perfect. It's quite amazing that pretty much nobody ever sang the verse included here, not even singers from the era AFAIK.
    Even more confusing to this is the fact that the notes played during the verse sound more like chords, instead of the melody? It's hard to discern.
    Would love to hear or even sing myself a full version of the song.

      It was quite normal, during the dance band era, to miss out the verse. The music and the dancing were the thing.
      Commercial records often name the band, the dance step, and then say 'with vocal refrain'.
      The 'vocal refrain' could easily be Al Bowlly!

    • @LudiusQuassas
      @LudiusQuassas Рік тому

      @@tooleyheadbang4239
      I'm well aware of this, but it's still quite sweet nonetheless to have the full song. The original music sheet seems lost to time, as most music sheets available online of this song only include the chorus.
      So this video and another upload are pretty much the only instances where we can hear the verse in any form. Because even the faster versions of "Midnight", like the Roy Fox one, miss the verse in the instrumental, and the Fred Hartley one, which is fully instrumental, is instead a bit more improvisational.
