I love how they hold onto there members, some bands just ditch a guy for being troubled or suffering through difficulty, that's real brotherhood: when you change everything for your friend, for the people you've spent years making it with
This is kind of what I thought the reason was as to why they changed their sound, the screaming disappeared. I honestly respect them so much, screaming can be really destructive for your voice, especially if you're doing it for several years. I will always love their music no matter WHAT, they will always be my favorite band of all time.
Screaming "improperly" can be destructive. Logically, as an instrument, the voice will be affected if you overuse it (even if you sing correctly). As they mentioned, they were touring a lot and having so many shows, that is really tiring to the vocalist's voice. Not forgetting to mention that Matt wasn't screaming properly. His vocals folds handled it for a quite long time, to be honest. Now, years after your comment, here we are again with the screaming.
Honestly almost everyone does, but it's completely useless if Matt can't pull it off. If he can't pull it off and proceeds to do it, there's more bad shit that's coming in this band's way. It's like cancer. It's better to go through the shitty chemotherapy than delaying it until you die at stage 69. It's either you go through the 'bad' stuff from Trivium than witnessing the fall of the band (due to Matt forcing himself to scream while being in a bad state of himself). So in that case I'm fine with Trivium with cleans.
DamageIncM Man,selling something out, and selling yourself out is different right ? They stay true to the music they feel like playing, thats not selling out.
At first it shocked me that there wasn't any screaming but honestly I really liked SITS. Although shogun is still my fave, SITS is still a beast of an album. When I was younger I uset to think if a band no longer had screaming it in, they sold out but it could be a million and one things as to why they didn't include screaming, maybe the song didn't call for it, maybe the front man is having trouble or maybe just don't want the continue to do that. Enjoy all kinds of music but limit yourself
saw them last year at graspop and last week in amsterdam, and at both they played more ascendacy and shogun. and it sounds great. pull harder sounds great live!
I think the reasons for silence in the snow was one Matt was having trouble with his screaming, two Matt is older than he was on ascendancy and his voice changed giving him a better singing quality, three they wanted to try something new and explore their musical talent, and finally for most of the bands life it's been Matt and Corey being the main vocal presence in the band and they wanted to give Paolo a shot at showing his end of their vocal spectrum so he can have the chance to be in the spotlight cause think about it his bass playing is much more prominent in silence in the snow and he really helps Matt a lot with the sing in this album so maybe the silence in the snow is Paolo trying to come out of the shadows made by Corey and Matt's guitar playing and screaming
I love you guys, you are my favorite band (just below Metallica) and I hope Matt will get better and heal his voice. I dunno, I'm just a fan, but maybe taking a rest from the tour or something? Comeback next year, take your time guys, but PLEASE, DON'T BREAK UP! TRIVIUM IS THE SHIT!!! And we need you guys, for metal, for heavy music. I wish you guys the best! Cheers from Brazil.
You can see that Corey is just so happy he doesn’t have to be primary screamer anymore. It’s taken time but Matt’s healthy screams are getting even better still. Even now Matt’s injury and recovery has inspired countless people, including me, to learn healthy techniques before all else.
I actually prefer clean vocals but I can understand their issues trying to play the popular older songs. That being said, when you create any song there should not be a rule about screams or no screams. The vocals style should just serve the song.
it's all good I enjoyed SITS but you gotta do what you gotta do keep the band going and I want them to be around for a long time, it does seem like screaming and playing can be exhausting. when I saw them in January they were so good, definitely one of the best live bands. Trivium for life
Oh my god I was not aware of any of this and I'm a diehard trivium fan since ember to inferno, every single album. Didn't know this was happening. I actually learned how to scream due to this one little take they have of matt screaming for the recording from "forsake not the dream", it took me two years until i felt comfortable with screaming, then my vocal teacher heard it and told me to put a punch in the stomach on the bottom of it otherwise i would hurt myself, even then matt was a great reference of screaming. Really wish for the best, I mean, a vacation would not be bad for you guys, have you seen how many albums you've released? Even if you disbanded you're one of the most professional metal bands out there able to pull off a perfect hiatus recovery...
trivium are notorious for not being completely honest to their fans. after recording SITS, they kept saying how the record didn't call for screams, which is why it didn't have any. however, in this interview, it is so clear they didn't include any screams, because matt simply couldn't do it. just be honest from the get-go guys.
maybe the songs sounded like shit because someone who doesnt sound like matt poorly edited poorly recorded screams into a song without proper recording equipment? SITS didn't need screams because the rest of the album besides matt's voice was so painfully boring screaming wouldn't have added the same dynamic it used too.
***** If they can take these new epic cleans, get back to playing guitar like I know they can and sprinkle in some of matt's new screams, we will have a great trivium record.
I actually like when he just sounds "aggressive" and doesn't totally SCREAM. First they did Metallica, then with Vengeance Falls they sounded like Disturbed..so not sure what's next. Not that it's bad, but they're still youngens. lol
Its True, since vengeance falls trivium doesn't seems like they are the band who realease albums like Ascendancy or even Shogun that has like 50% celan voices and 50% screams. Matt always said that he always want to be a good singer, cause in the early trivium he couldn't sing, maybe he's frustrated, but anyway. I remember in the making of, of silience in the snow paolo said that the band put their eyes, or their ears, in bandas like arch enemy and soilwork and also hear their old albums to make a good album, I think that now Matt want to do what he want and that's why the band doesn't work like before. Honestly I am a fan of the band, even I can catalogated like my favorite band but qhen in an album of your favorite METAL band just 1 or 2 songs touch your inner metalhead, there's something wierd there.
Corey should become lead vocals an rythym, and matt on lead an backing. heavy trivium rebirth. bassist should be endorsed by pledge polish? keep that bonce shiny!!!!
The new record is weird for first time i listen... And play them a couple time. Shit it's awesome.. this is the other "shogun".. don't judge quickly.. play again and again and you can feel the vocal, liric, instrument bring the power
All the complaints people are throwing out. Trivium is my favorite band. Sell out or not. Who would really know if someone sells out? Maybe a band would like to take a different direction. That wouldn't make one a sell out. As long as these guys keep doing their thing I'm happy. On another note, a lot of complaining seems to mostly come from people that most likely couldn't even pick up an instrument, and think they have room to whine about how something sounds. Coming from a musician. It's not as easy as big bands make it seem. Whatever the case may be, either like it or don't. Crying about something cause it's not going your way? It's a bit ridiculous.
in other words... upon realising theyve lost a lot of fans and attention with this radio friendly smug shit new snow album, they're going to go back to what made them successful in the first place, for which i'm glad. PLEASE bring out a heavy album, pop rock shit doesn't suit Trivium
Corey uses false chord?! No wonder he hates having to do lead screams. That's what I use and it uses a ton of air, making it a pain in the ass to do verses sentences without pauses
they kick him out because of that, corey said this, that guy was 90% of the time fucking around with his hair and 10% practicing. in my opinion matt madiro was the youngest so i think he has maturity problems with responsability
I couldnt care less if there were screaming vocals in metal, but it seems like you just can't sing clean over really heavy instrumentals, so you either A. leave them as just instrumental parts, B. scream over them, C. leave them out entirely. What sucks to me is Trivium went with C for SITS, and the music just bored the hell out of me, regardless of the vocals. Hopefully we get more fun musically from Trivium in the future if Heafy can scream again.
It's funny how people acknowledge that Matt was wrecking his voice with the screaming bullshit, but willfully ignore the fact that screamy vocals like that WILL trash your voice over time, permanently. Why? Because your vocal chords aren't meant to do that do much. As much as I love Shogun, in all blunt honesty, it would have sounded even better WITHOUT all the screaming. I was actually pretty disappointed when they went back on their previous word, saying their sound in Crusade was going to be their sound going forward, and fell back into the screaming for the next three albums. I also wasn't a huge fans of the SITS sound when I first heard it, but it grew on me, and it helps that the album itself has really strong songs. I would really like for them to settle on a sound that is something of a mix of Crusade and Silence. Yet last I recall, I heard they were "going back to screaming" on the next record. It really just doesn't make sense.
Call me weird.. I'd take it as an honour if my foot slipped at least once over matt's spit on stage haha.. the guy pretty much spits every 10 seconds :))
i love how Corey says like 5 words a interview :)
first time the bassist of a metal band talks that much
Cause he writes quite a bit of the songs.
dudes badass
He really is a chatterbox
He isn't your typical bassist who takes a back seat in the band's affairs. He himself is one of their driving force
Remember when you could go to shows? Man. I miss this.
I love how they hold onto there members, some bands just ditch a guy for being troubled or suffering through difficulty, that's real brotherhood: when you change everything for your friend, for the people you've spent years making it with
tell that to travis or nick or mat or paul
New drummer every other album after Travis left
This is kind of what I thought the reason was as to why they changed their sound, the screaming disappeared. I honestly respect them so much, screaming can be really destructive for your voice, especially if you're doing it for several years. 5 years later: IN THE COURT OF THE DRAAAAGOOOON
2:22 Corey's "THANK GOD!"
Says it all, he misses the heavier Trivium... we all do! :(

So in that case I'm fine with Trivium with cleans.
Trivium hasn't dipped in quality for me at least. I've seen them 14 times. Hope to see them another 14.
or matt could sing and the others scream while they have heavy/badass riffs of ember to inferno/ascendancy?
I think it came back
And people think Trivium sold out ! pfft.
DamageIncM Man,selling something out, and selling yourself out is different right ?
They stay true to the music they feel like playing, thats not selling out.
Only elitest bellends say that unless they stop being metal they haven't sold out...
Good to hear Matt's vocal problems are under control. Silence in the snow definitively suffered with the lack of screaming, among other things.
it's still a great record. heavy music doesn't need screams necessarily.
+Vincentdrummer16 Ya Tremonti is a great example :)
It isn't even heavy
Does it have to be?
no it didnt. its a great album. pure and simple heavy metal
where the hell is "part 2"?
FANTASTIC INTERVIEW....i almost cried!!
At first it shocked me that there wasn't any screaming but honestly I really liked SITS. Although shogun is still my fave, SITS is still a beast of an album. Enjoy all kinds of music but limit yourself
You could have 2 or 3 regular guys screaming or 1 Phil Anselmo.
Phil's voice is going downhill sadly. His voice was absolutely amazing on the first 3 Pantera records IMO
I saw them in March this year and they played Requiem and I literally lost my shit
saw them last year at graspop and last week in amsterdam, and at both they played more ascendacy and shogun. and it sounds great. pull harder sounds great live!
Drinking game: take a shot every time they say "scream/ing"
Mandarin or, take a shot every time the word 'like' is said
0:15 DAT BASS SHRED THO
If only it were audible

Matt is by far my favourite growl singer, I hope he will find a way to preserve his voice
I'm still waiting for part 2. When is it going to be up?
4:48 feels like she's about start screaming too :)
I actually prefer clean vocals but I can understand their issues trying to play the popular older songs. That being said, when you create any song there should not be a rule about screams or no screams. The vocals style should just serve the song.
I was glad when the screaming wasn't there I like the older more melodic stuff
Perfect example of Corey doing majority of vocals is Trivium - Live Motocultor Festival 2015 on the song Pull Harder...
Amazing musicians
it's all good I enjoyed SITS but you gotta do what you gotta do keep the band going and I want them to be around for a long time, it does seem like screaming and playing can be exhausting. when I saw them in January they were so good, definitely one of the best live bands. Trivium for life
Matt's fuckin awesome, always my hero! Love trivium!
Why not just let Corey cover the screams on the albums like he does live?
At the end of the interview he says it's to tiring for him. He puts a lot of power into his screaming.
+L Galicki And even Corey has his limits
+L Galicki And even Corey has his limits
+L Galicki And even Corey has his limits
because they sound like shit

Excellent. Matt can scream again. Please no more records like yellow in the snow. It's fucking depressing.
starscream623 lmfao
SINTS wasn't Bad at all...
Saw them yesterday and Matt was screaming like a fucking boss!
.....where's Part 2?
trivium are notorious for not being completely honest to their fans. after recording SITS, they kept saying how the record didn't call for screams, which is why it didn't have any. however, in this interview, it is so clear they didn't include any screams, because matt simply couldn't do it. just be honest from the get-go guys.
This really changed my view of the band. It was obvious this was the case, but with this and that they admitted it I feel I can live with SITS
Probably didn't want to scare fans and start rumors if he killed his voice for good or not.
It's not like SITS needed any screams, anyway.
maybe the songs sounded like shit because someone who doesnt sound like matt poorly edited poorly recorded screams into a song without proper recording equipment? Corey rocking that King Diamond shirt!
Is interview from IHOP?

He will sing for you guy's
Queensryche and king diamond!!!! Yeah

They wouldn't have done that if Matt's voice didn't break. I personally liked it, but I do agree. Doesn't seem like a Trivium release.
I thought it was nice having a single album without screaming, but the screaming is great!
Exactly. It was a breath of fresh air. And I like that The Sin And The Sentence had vibes of their older stuff and Silence In The Snow.
Vietnam memories of download 2006
Corey uses false chord?! No wonder he hates having to do lead screams. That's what I use and it uses a ton of air, making it a pain in the ass to do verses sentences without pauses
So the previous drummer couldn't play all of their catalog? What the hell happened to practicing?
they kick him out because of that, corey said this, that guy was 90% of the time fucking around with his hair and 10% practicing. in my opinion matt madiro was the youngest so i think he has maturity problems with responsability
+Renato Briones where did Corey say this?
i think in a interview from the first festival of this year i dont remember actually but just search corey interview 2016
Anyone know why Paolo shaved his head?
I couldnt care less if there were screaming vocals in metal, but it seems like you just can't sing clean over really heavy instrumentals, so you either A. leave them as just instrumental parts, B. scream over them, C. leave them out entirely. what's the first song in the video?
"a gunshot to the head of trepidation" off of their Ascendancy album, great album if you haven't heard it
CUT MY BOY COREY OFF LIKE THAT AGAIN,,, I DARE YA!!!
🤘🤓
YOU DONT NEED SCREAMING. THIS IS A MESSAGE TO TRIVIUM AND ALL METAL MUSIC
Metal without screams is like a drummer without his sticks...
*list of singers who don't scream*
Not trying to be snide bro, but c'mon. C'mon.
STFU punk bitch.
King looks like he's operating on very little sleep.

Corey looks so uncomfortable the entire time
Paulo talking about in ears saving his voice when it could be dropped from the mix entirely and no one would notice or care.
whatausername ok boomer
does the guitar player even talk, shoukdnt have even showed up,damn bass player talks
He can only screams, that's why he doesn't talk at all
Just joking, don't hate me.
Corey isn't the type of guy that talks a lot in interviews anyways
Part 2, conspiracy...
Call me weird.. I'd take it as an honour if my foot slipped at least once over matt's spit on stage haha.. the guy pretty much spits every 10 seconds :))
GoneDeathMode facts 😂
huge neck?
All of that windmilling gave Corey that huge neck haha
i believe you look at george fisher.....
COREY-psegrinder
The Matt Heafy situation is that he's a cocky control freak who can't keep a drummer.
I was expecting just that when I clicked.
so is this why everything after in waves sucked?
Lol "after in waves"
funny how everyone has their most fav and most hated album with trivium.
i like them all for their own reasons tho.
xavier flores silence in the snow is one of my all time favourite trivium albums. people should give it a chance.
you mean sucked at sucking. they make great music regardless of their style
This comment sure aged poorly
