  • Over the weekend, somebody posted an interesting prompt for discussion on Twitter. The question posed is: what might you ask on a first date to determine someone's IQ? I had a suggestion that got a lot of people upset.

That's the problem with feminist women today. They're caricatures of men.

And no reason to stay with someone who does not share your goals because in the long run he/she will evolve in a different direction. As for common interests, I am somewhat hesitant - in some cases it might be helpful (e.g. both being more interested in sports than art), in most cases not - even in a couple everyone has to have HIS own thing. I am married and i was not looking for an intellectual guy, but someone who was wise. There are too many intellectual fools out there. Even if he wasn't smart, I wanted him to have wisdom. I forget what questions I asked him, but i would watch him when he was around his parents, siblings and other women and how he treated people in general. A moral and wise person is what I wanted. Words are words, actions are much more important. My husband ended up being extremely smart (he is a mathematician and a scientist), whereas I am nothing remotely close. But he never ever makes me feel stupid. He is kind, thinks things over very carefully (he didn't know basic things like how to cook, garden, work on house or a car, but I knew those things). He attentively listens and allows me to teach him things and vice versa. He is not easily convinced or swayed by things. He is very wise and such a wonderful tenderhearted husband. He chose me even though i was not smart. Intellect can easily be lost on a fool, but a wise person, though they are currently not smart, will quickly gain intellect once given the information. I choose wisdom, morality and kindness from the heart over intellect and beauty.

People are making dating and marriage WAAAYYYYY more complicated than it actually is. As someone who's been married for 25 years, here's some advice that's honest and true. And free:
    1. When you're seeing someone new, make sure you find out on your FIRST DATE if you both want children and both want to get married. Those two things are NON-NEGOTIABLE. Never ever start a relationship with someone who doesn't want children or wants to get married if you want both of those things and hope that they'll change their minds at some point. I don't care how charming they are or how they seem to be the only one who can understand you. I promise you, they are NOT the right one for you. Why are you wasting your time?? And if you are, that's on you and shows that you're hesitant about making a commitment.
    2. From the time you go on your first date to the day you get married should not be more than two years, unless you're both under 18. Again, what are you waiting for? What can you possibly know more about each other?
    3. Never ever compromise your own values to fit into the other person. You either both accept each other as you are, or move on. Something which may annoy you may not bother someone else. And vice versa.
Date with a purpose. The end goal is marriage and a life together. It's up to you to make it happen.

Despite whatever level of relationship (or lack thereof) the person you're courting claims to have with them, he or she still learned (or didn't learn) what type of spouse to be, expecting how to treat and be treated by you, from the parents. This will be his or her default, be sure it's one you can forever live with if they never improve.

@@pamjones7426 I can agree with dating with a purpose... But that purpose isn't always to run to the altar. Individual people have different goals in life, and success in dating can look like a 60 year marriage, or a wonderful summer, and anything in between. Nothing is a given, and you have to find a partner who you can accept for however long love can last, and appreciate that no matter how it pans out. If not, and it doesn't work out, you're going to feel like a failure. Relationships often play themselves out over time, but that doesn't make it a failure.

I'd have trouble on where to start with that question. I've never had a female ask me this question (except my sister who was a history major). I've had males ask me but not females.
    1) The Sengoku Jidai Era: the rise of Tokagawa Ieyasu (who Tokyo is named after) and the rise of the Shogunate.
    2) The Fall of the Shogunate: this era mixed feudal Japan with more modern technology like ironclads, machineguns, and rifles.
    3) Russia's ridiculous fleet they sent from the Baltic Sea to Port Arthur. This whole voyage reads like a joke. Russia was so incompetent.
    4) The Kush, The Afar, Aksum. Very few people even know these exist.
    5) The Mughal and Maratha Empires. Few know about ancient India.
    6) Catherine the Great, Peter the Great, Frederick the Great, Queen Elizabeth the 1st, Henry the VIII, Queen Mary, Mary Queen of Scotts, Queen Victoria, Loius the 14th (the "Sun King"), etc.
    7) Scipio Africanus' invasion of Africa.
    8) Ceasar's invasion of Gaul. Caesar is taken prisoner by pirates and demanding they request a larger ransom for his life (he then hunted them all down).
    9) Timur the Lame and his invasion of the Middle East out of Afghanistan.
    10) Pyrrhus of Epirus and how winning isn't always that great.
    11) The Three Kingdoms Era.
That's in ten minutes off the top of my head.

These sound like rather ancient events. The more interesting events for me are when feudalism was replaced by democracy/capitalism, this was a rather important step forward from "simple/natural" social order based on warlordism to something more efficient and politically more stable and less violent. Freedom of speech, separation of powers, universal suffrage all were introduced at about this time.

The events of (8) happened at two different periods of time in Caesar's life: he was young-ish when he was taken by Cilician pirates- he had been heading to Greece to further his education in public speaking, if memory serves; the pirates were apparently amused when he considered the ransom they asked for, too low & demanded they increase it to like 50 talents (which was an eye-watering sum)- they also apparently found it hilarious that he promised, when he was freed- he would hunt them down & kill all of them.
He kept his promise, even when the governor of the region proved reluctant to assist him - he put together a force, & true to his word- captured & crucified the pirates (& took back his elevated ransom, to boot) - but as a measure of mercy, had the pirates' throats slit before their crucifixion.
Yet his later colleague, rival, & future son-in-law Pompey gets the credit for ridding the Mediterranean of pirates (except, pirates were still a problem after both men's deaths- their successors were still dealing with them)...
All the docos & movies talk about his Gallic Wars, the civil war, his time in Egypt, & his death {which is roughly a decade or so, at the end of his life}- but little light gets shone on his youth; he came of age in the era of Marius & Sulla, & their civil war - he was actually related to (or would be related to) both men by marriage; Marius was married to his aunt (when still fairly young he delivered a eulogy for her), & later on, one of his wives was related to Sulla - the latter said of the young Caesar that, 'he saw many a Marius in Caesar'.

Matt, you have been saying a lot of dumb things lately, but this one is OK. I would probably phrase it "What are some historical periods you find interesting? And if so, what makes them so interesting to you?" That does tell a lot about the intellect of a person. But I'm a history buff, and I admit most people aren't, so I would not put too much stock in that. Everybody's brain is different. Some men are interested in the interworkings of a car's differential, or the internal combustion engine and have zero interest in history. That does not mean they aren't intelligent. It just means they are interested in something different than you and I. I'm interested in a car's differential and history. But this is one of the problems with the extreme right and extreme left today. You have to think like them in order to be accepted. Just as it is possible to understand the workings of a car's differential and be a horrible driver it is possible to know history and continue to make the mistakes of the past. Which means you can still know stuff and not be intelligent or have common sense.

Same. I'm in Australia and unfortunately the minimum time you have to wait to get married is one month and one day, but if there was a Las Vegas-type place, we would've eloped after our first date. We did get engaged after our first date and married a few months later. Like you, we just knew. We've been married for 25 years and been through a lot together. I see people who've been together for 8 years or more and just stalling getting married and I wonder just what they're waiting for. What other revelations about each other are you waiting to find??
