As someone that toured with multiple chopped hammonds throughout the years (first M3, then C3, then L100) and then moving to a Farfisa and then back to a Hammond esque board (Cruman T1) I'd take a new board any day! At the end of the day, no one in the audience really cares nor can tell the difference. In 25 years, I can count on my hands how many people came up to me asked me about my gear.
Its really for the player what they choose to bring out on the road. We really live in a time now that the technology is identical. Sure, it won't pick up the imperfections of YOUR hammond because each hammond goes through it's life in different ways, sometimes ending up with a character that won't come close to MY hammond. It happens. At the end of the day, these side by side tests are fun but we can totally all agree, the clonewheels have been spot on for years now.

Right on with your post. The audience now days will pay up to $100 to hear a "band" sing someone else's old song to a ton of back up tracks and they accept it. Basically live karaoke.
40 years ago a band I was in returned to a bar 6 months after our first time there and a girl from the audience told me on our band break " I see your bass player bought a new bass". Yup, they use to be into music and performance, not this musical mastrubation that is crammed at us on most radio stations. Hey younger musicians, you cats are very talented but the good times and gigs are gone. We use to perform 5, 6, 7, nights a week at the same packed club. If you did not have a seat by 8:30 on Fri or Sat, you did not get in and at 12:45 a bouncer in a referee shirt yelled " hotel motel time, you gotta leave". Bar still jammed packed. 1960 through 1980 was the best music environment in America and it shall never return, at least not here.

@@abc-yv2jsIf you get to know in which country I can find this kind of music environment again, I'd be happy to know. Consumerism and digital market changed everything. Technical progress says Jacques Ellul. When will the greed fo money stop shaping the political world ?

Thanks for doing this! You can definitely hear the superiority of the Hammond, though I would say both units definitely have their place.

Try running that MOJO thru the new Hammond B3-X organ software and then thru that leslie...Im sure you wont be able to tell much difference if any

Good idea. Use the Mojo 61 as a controller to play the Hammonf B3-X plug in software. Hammond artists themselves say there is no difference and in fact they can record records with the B3X software which they say also has the best Leslie Sim currently available. I agree. So now the hunt is on to find a organ waterfall keyboard ideally dual manual controller and currently the MOjo 61 is the most affordable choice.

I use the Mojo 61 with Yamaha Genos and the midi works just fine. In fact the overdrive of the Mojo is more authentic than my XK5 and blends better with Genos. I liked your review thank you

I'm really torn - I love my Hammond and Leslie 145, but the latest Mojo is just killer for recording and 'straight into a PA'. TBH I find myself playing my Mojo more these days.as it now emulates that valve feedback sound that you get from a C3 close to a 122/147/145 etc. (but at manageable volumes). Hmm pros and cons - if you're a purist then you probably need a Hammond but if you're a rocker like me then the new Mojo is bloody hard to beat.

MrArchie. I feel your pain. I could really use the space, getting rid of hammond and Leslie in a small room here. But hearing a/my hammond on a recording brings me joy. Can’t bring myself to sell it right now.

@@PeteBuchwald Demo the Hammond Xk-5 and compare to your organ. Maybe keep a Leslie still. Or buy the new Leslie more portable. But the new XK-5 from Hammond will cost 6k and tax. Plus stand and pedal. Plus moon switch.

Yeah apples for apples the Hammond sounds better for sure, but the differences are fairly subtle to me. In addition to the Rhodes, I have found the wurlitzer, farfisa and clavinet sounds from the crumar to be quite useful as well. I also have a zoom h5 and would comment that the demo might have utilized a stereo pair of plug-in mics to the third and fourth channel rather than the included microphones for greater audio quality. Also, I would think most people would have more full range speakers than those krk monitors, perhaps a more fair comparison would have been with a line in to the recorder from the crumar vs. a nice stereo pair of condenser mics on the Leslie.

How true. Even jazzers use Neo Vents and B3 clones at times. A decent clone + a Neo vent + a Yamaha Motif single rack is a 2 or 3 space carry on luggage killer set up that can do most anything. Or you could have your hernia and sound worse and pay more for your dual Hammond 61 note organ and wooden leslie. I'd rather be rich than stupid. And Id rather sound great.

No comparison of chorus vibrato...the backbone of the Hammond jazz sound
The biggest difference I is how the Leslie simulation responds to percussion.. It alters it enough to be an issue.

Great work. Surprised how much of a difference there is: The real thing seems to have way more life and richness, probably due to more overtones. In comparison, the clone sounds rather meeky.

I am with you! When I hear my M3 on songs that I produced, it makes me smile. I just love the tone, and the character that comes through. The mojo has been fun to play on my church gig, but I sure wish I had a real hammond.

@@PeteBuchwald I would love to take a Hammond/Leslie on the road like the old days, ‘70s and ‘80s. Now, I don’t have a road crew, an athletic young drummer or my slim-hipped football star body. Thank god for Crumar, Hammond SK and Xk & other portable organs. And for Ventillators or Motion-Sound.
As has been noted, if you drag your Big Ol’ Hammond on the road, it is for you own edification. 99.9% of the audience wouldn’t hear any difference. Not even between the ones in this vid.

On the Mojo, with the slow internal Leslie, it is OK, but when it passes on fast speed , it's less good. The fast speed seems less naturaly than slow speed.. It is a few the same problem that i've notified on "neo ventilator" effect.

Like every other digital modeler, the Crumar got crushed in this head-to-head shootout. I’ve never seen a keyboard, amp modeler, digital effect that sounded as good as the real thing. However, when you put them in the mix with the rest of the band, they’re almost always more than good enough.
