    They make it look so easy - but the skill these people had was incredible, a great piece of history captured here of true railwaymen

    CLASS! I never saw any tower operators here in the US wearing a tie at work! Maybe back in the 1940's...Great video thank you so much for posting it!

    I was a signal box boy at Aldgate in 1957. In those days the diagram was a little different than seen in the video, there was a move from from either platform2 or 3 to a stabling siding for the loco to stand ( Sarah Siddons etc) just west of the Station, How this was done is another story.

    Hi Sean & Steve.
    Good to see you and the guys in this wonderful video from Ted, Thanks Ted. Hope everyone is good and great to see this hands on cabin being worked.
    Sadly replaced by incredibly boring and remote computer generated Control. Well thats progress for you ! Take care guys.

    how does the signalman know what train is what when all that is on the diagram is just white lights

    • @Cookiein7
      @Cookiein7  5 років тому +2

      Where the track circuit indications are extinguished, that indicates the presence of a train. A train may occupy several track circuits at a time. The describer wings on each end of the diagram announce the destination of each train. The train register, which the signaller follows, advises them of the timetabled passage of each train. That may not always be the case, as you can hear, train running orders are passed from one box to another.
