Farage maintained his Brexit candidates in Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green constituencies, again reckoning that the pro-Brexit vote would switch from those parties to his own party or to the Conservative Party. Sure enough, in all those places we saw Labour's vote drop, usually by the same amount as the Conservative / Brexit vote had risen. In some constituencies it was enough to deprive the Labour candidates of a majority and the Conservative candidates won. However, because so many people are tribally loyal to political parties, there were always a lot of votes for Labour candidates in Labour held areas; those voters may have been holding their noses but couldn't vote for anyone else. Consequently, the best that the Brexit Party could hope for was third place in most areas that they stood. The goal was not so much to win seats but to squeeze the overall vote in such a way as to push the Conservatives to the fore and push Labour further back.
