    I am really quite surprised that nobody has even noticed the theme music change. This was done by a local musician that gave me a bunch of his old studio gear and low and behold the DAT recorder had this tape in it with a bunch of theme music he was working on recorded.

      I noticed the theme change.. I'm always a little sad to see a change, since the theme sets the mood and you sort of fall into the same groove. But change can be good after a while.. we'll see how it wears with time. Perhaps tag the old theme onto the Outro of the video with credits.

    Thank you very much! One V.C.R. that I have that seems to take your worldly advice is my Sharp VC-6846U. I replaced the idler in it back in February and the deck works very well. However, if I leave it idle for a week or so and power it on, it will wind unevenly and would chew a tape. I found that doing a full wind of a cassette before playing it fixes the issue. If I use the Sharp for hours on end, no problems occur. Yep, sitting idle does my 1986 Sharp no good.

    Nice work Mr. Dave! I've come across those Sharp regulators myself in the past and they do act kind of odd in circuit, with having the "enable out" pin and all. Not the easiest circuitry to troubleshoot, particularly without a schematic, for sure. You persisted however, and got it back running without the schematic, just by using your T/S skills. Very nicely done sir... Nicely done!!! Fred

    Bought a model similar to this one today, no power most of the VCR side, the rest is fine though. Tapes will start to go in but get ejected before going in fully. The guides don't move and the drum doesn't either. I will have to try to clean the switch, as you did in the video. Not something I'm looking forward to though, as I don't do well with getting the ribbon cables back in sometimes. (I'll do it another time; as I'm not in a rush. Much appreciate the video showing how to do it though). The model I got is a TOSHIBA D-VR18DTKB. Have found a manual for it online too, so will have that help too.👍

    I have one of these and I was having some comet tails in the picture occasionally. I would run a dry cleaning tape through and it would work fine for a while and then the comet tails would come back again. I really didn't want to open it and mess with it so I risked one of those cheap wet cleaning tapes (I had one on hand still new sealed). Of course is exploded the unit... Jammed up. I found your videos and decided to open it. Similar issue. I was able to get the tape free by breaking it (cheap plastic). So the Unit powers on and rewinds for a bit and shuts down. I discovered that the unit will not fully power on if the DVD drive is disconnected. So anyway.. I can manipulate the belt drive and the tape guides move up.. but nothing else. The mechanism won't rise up and eject. Still jammed. I'm guessing it's the mode switch but I'm not a VCR guy.. more of a computer guy. Could there be another issue as to why it is still jammed up?
    Update.. doesn't seem like the mode switch.. the gears are just jammed up hard. Gonna give up on this one and salvage the DVD recorder and power supply. Lesson learned.. never use those stupid Wet cleaning tapes.

    While I agree that it's not just a crappy Funai as many say, the VCR side of these machines certainly leave alot to be desired. • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому +4

      The vcr deck is almost perfect. The name of the game in VCRs is the fewer the number of moving parts the better and this one has one of the lowest number of moving parts i have seen. Not just moving parts but parts in general. Fewer to fail. Like the central ir led. It is used for tape end sensors and tape reel rotation for take up and supply depending on motor direction. Ingenious. 3 led and 4 photo transistors replaces by 1 led and 3 photo transistors. Highest motor count on any consumer VCR went to Panasonic pv1730 which had six, drum capstan, supply reel, take up real, loading motor, and front loader motor. This one has three drum motor, capstan motor, and loading motor which threads the tape and operates the front loading mechanism and only two belts one for the reels and one for the loading motor. The most problematic VCR mechanisms were the ones that had the pinch roller that lifted out of the way and the extra threading arms that pulled the tape in behind the pinch roller. You wonder why this was done well in the early days it was thought that you could not fast forward or rewind a tape fully loaded due to the sharp bends the tape made as it went over the guides and by pulling more tape out and moving the capstan back this would allow for gentler tape handling. There may have been validity to this but it sure did nothing for reliability and those mechanisms (think Samsung sv3000, Panasonic g mech, Sony slv555, r1000 ect) were very good money makers for service people. Funai pretty much perfected the original layout as this one has allowing for FF and rew fully loaded. Think about it for a minute. Which were the most trouble prone VHS decks and which were the most reliable.

    Thank you for making this video. Its helping me decide if I should try to repair my machine or take it to a shop. I have one without the tuner that has been sitting unused for several years. I recently tried playing a cassette and discovered it would load, would not play and then immediately ejected with tape still stuck in the machine. I removed the cover and poked around inside to see if I discovered something obvious. Made it cycle through load and eject without a cassette. Now it will take a cassette without eating it but it powers down after taking up the tape against the head. After powering back up it releases the tape and ejects the cassette with no problem.
