it really helps when you give that excellent view of the equipment while it's operating. Being able to see it while it's driving gives a totally enhanced perspective of the effectiveness of all the lights. Thank you I hope you continue doing that whenever you show equipment it's always nice to see it at a distance because it highlights the true capacity of the lighting systems.

They may look out of place but they are effective. I've seen them on many vehicles in the field.

It’s lost on me why an EMS unit needs a push bumper or for what legitimate EMS purpose?

    • @35manning

In Australia we call them "bull bars" and them normally extend all the way to the sides and some even wrap around with side bars that extend past the wheels and tie back in to the chassis under/behind the front wheel guards.
While I understand that many USA police cars have "push bumpers" for use in pursuits or for moving vehicles off highways / dangerous areas to safety, ultimately bull bars are an armoured accessory that protect the vulnerable and fragile vehicle against slow / medium impacts.
Common examples included small trees and brush, fences and gates (sometimes in emergencies it's better to just drive through them and fix the fence / gate later) and animal impacts.
In Australia, kangaroos are a REAL hazard and it's not uncommon for even family sedans to be fitted with bull bars, which are seen as a disposable / replaceable item that whilst not preventing damage to a vehicle will in most cases minimise that damage and prevent the vehicle from becoming a complete write off.
I highly doubt that an EMS vehicle is going to be ramming cars in a pursuit, but the may have airports nearby fitted with "break away" gates.
Gates designed to be rammed with minimal damage.
There may also be some off-road driving or animal risk considerations.
Could be a number of valid reasons, even including being used as a mounting point for lights.

Its more so to protect the bumper and paint of the vehicle itself versus pushing a car out of your way. Way cheaper to damage tubular metal versus the car bumpers.

@@hihfty I’m well aware of what a ‘push bumper’ is for. How does it fit into ‘emergency medical services?’ I have never seen and EMS unit, fire department, or an ambulance push a car out of a roadway. Simply, it’s not their role.

@@jastubler you’re missing the point. They aren’t using them to push cars. They’re using them to protect the vehicle from the bumps and dings that inevitably happen during its life time. Having a ton of people with different driving skills it’s inevitable they hit things by accident. For instance my department also runs 10 ambulances and they have “push bars” that have taken a beating but they have never once used them to move a vehicle.

A lot of fire departments here outfit their ambulances with full replacement brush guards. They’re outfitted with brush guards to protect the front from damage. It’s just a precaution.
