- Chill season 2023 is here, and with it comes two brand new maps! But how do they compare relative to the other maps?
In this video essay, I give my comprehensive ranking of all the maps in Splatoon 3 (as of Chill Season 2023-2024) and explain my reasoning behind it!
(Remember these are just my opinions lol!)

Nicely done video, although I think this probably has the most hot takes in a single Splatoon video I've ever seen. The biggest thing I would critique is that spawn camping isn't as much of a problem as you say it is. Most of the specials/good main weapons are strong enough to get out of spawn and knockouts remove steamrolls from being too long. Since turf war isn't a competitive mode (except in Koshien mostly), getting locked in spawn isn't as big of an issue that's important to the map design imo.
I would say that there are many issues for why most of the maps are poorly designed-the ability to easily spawncamp, and lockout and stall objectives, being only a small portion of that. It’s been a major problem in all 3 games, but this game it’s been horrible lol. Spawncamping discouragement of various types would play a role in making many of these maps on certain modes at least a little more tolerable.
I would agree to a certain extent it's great if you are the ones doing the spawn camping but not if you are on the recieving end.
I really REALLY don't agree with most of this list but I really like your method of ranking them, good video!
Even if I don’t agree with some of your opinions, this is extremely well edited! I hope someday I can grow to make a video as entertaining as this one was :)
I appreciate that, thank you!
I thought I was alone in thinking barnacle and dime was the worst
i have no idea how competitive players play barnacle in zones and clams, that stage is the most barebones garbage to ever come out. if it was removed from the game absolutely nothing of value would be lost
B&D is the textbook comp map. Its playable but not fun aka FLC's wet dream
Manta Maria in 1st actually based
Even though I despise barnacle and dime, mincemeat has to be the worst in my opinion
He put some of my favourite maps at the lower places on the list for example mincemeat is my 3rd fav
I've always had a burning hatred for B&D, I get such a visceral reaction to seeing it. In an alternative universe, I would've tolerated B&D, but during the Weekend fest, I lost my first 10× in that fest (I won every other 10× prior to that loss) and it's forever cemented as my least favorite map!
I hate spawn camping, splat zones, and tower control… on some maps
Bit late to the video, but i really enjoyed it! I do agree with a lot of the choices, like manta is a great stage- however i just find that the points system you used was maybe a bit too limiting at times. I feel that a few of the maps got brought down a few too many spots because of one particular mode (for example ramens tower layout bringing it down so much). I completely understand the system, but it would probably be even better if each mode was rated out of 10 instead of 5 maybe. This is all just my opinion though, sorry its a long comment but again loved the video and got a sub from me!!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I tried to come up with a way to rank them that would take everything I personally care about in a map into account. If I ever decided to go back and rank Splatoon 2 maps I might redo the system-mainly cuz most of them are so much better than 3’s maps lol!
Undertow spillway is special to me. It was my introduction to rainmaker, which is now my favourite ranked mode. Scorch and eeltail are way too high and B&D is finally getting the hate it desperately deserves
bro gave 5 stars to inkblot rainmaker, a mode where you can only push from route☠☠☠
I feel like you complaining about “Tetris block shapes” is pretty unfounded. Like it’s just a shape, why are you so annoyed by it? A z-shaped stage is no less valid than any other stage shape. Sure it might be a bit overused but that’s just cause that’s the shape that you get when designing a multiplayer map that needs to be mirrored on both sides.
Yes it’s overused, but it’s a bad overused shape. It doesn’t allow for any additional routes or flanks as evidenced by all the “Tetris block” shaped maps in the game. Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 1 most certainly did not have this problem-they had a couple small cramped maps, but they were the exception, not the rule-so I find it bizarre that they had such a hard time making good maps for the first year of Splatoon 3’s life.
You see Museum is technically "tetris shaped" from that perspective, but it has a completely unique layout with branching routes and gimmicks besides that. Brinewater, old mahi, umami, and barnacle are literally just basic boring Tetris shapes with nothing special about their layouts.
Yes I actually ranked museum in my top 10
@@thebipedalsquid I don’t know, I feel like that abstracts the word from what it literally means. Like if you are gonna look at a map that is quite literally shaped like a Tetris block and say “oh it’s not a Tetris block map so it doesn’t count” then I feel like we need to make a different word for it.
I would appreciate this terms to mean what it says, and not just be a vague gesture towards “boring map design”.
