    The incredible thing about Andre was, as strong and as big as he was, he had great control. When he played Bigfoot on the Six Million Dollar Man, Lee Majors talked about filming scenes w/him, where he could feel him running towards him from the ground shaking. Then one scene where he's supposed to fall on him and he thought he would be crushed to death and didn't feel a thing!

    I saw Andre do his thing at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati in 1979 or 80. It's always difficult to ascertain exactly how strong he was but I do remember that the guy he wrestled ( I can't remember who his opponent was) was much wider and about as tall as my 6 foot 2 inch brother in law ,who had taken us to the event. So I'd guess the guy was at least 200 - 220 lbs. Andre picked him up by grabbing his ankle with one hand and dangled him over the ropes upside down. He picked him up as easily as someone holding up a largemouth bass to show it off. I remember my brother in law remarking that it was the most incredible feat of strength he'd ever seen. We were a couple of rows behind the barricade next to the ring and I couldn't believe the size of his head and shoulders. He was in good condition in those days so he may have been at the peak of his strength.

    $400,000 in 1973 is an insane amount of money. That's around $2.6 million in today's money. Guaranteed contracts worth millions wasn't a thing until the mid to late 90s. Most Wrestlers, for the majority of the 20th century, were lucky if they made enough money to cover gas money from one show to the next. Steve Austin famously could only afford to eat a can of tuna fish and one potato a day before becoming a major star in the business. Just to put things in perspective how much money promoters saw in Andre early on that they were willing to spend that kind of money on him. It boggles the mind especially when you realize how stingy with money promoters were back in the territory days.
    Edit because of thought of this shortly after I posted this. That part at the end with Jake Roberts saying he was hitting Andre as hard as he could and Andre didn't even know it because he couldn't feel it since he was so big and strong. It implies what would knock you or I down or leave a bruise felt like being hit with a pillow to him. That being said Andre said that the ONLY person he ever feared and didn't want to get on their bad side was Haku/Ming. Imagine being such a scary badass that even Andre The Giant is afraid of you. The Wrestling world has all sorts of crazy human beings in every way imaginable.

He should have retired gracefully when Hulk Hogan defeated him. Maybe he could have still lived or maybe it was the point of no return. Definitely very strong taking on 2 or even 3 wrestlers at the same time and of course in those battle royals where he might win or a few wrestlers would have to put him over the top ropes to throw him out of the ring. Hii mate, an extremely well researched and well presented video. There is no doubt in my mind that Andre would have broken the world records in both raw deadlift and raw squat at that time if he trained for it. The only powerlifting world record he wouldn't have set were in bench press due to the fact that 1. he was so tall with long arms which obviously is a hindrance In bench press. 2. Several wrestlers like Patera, Tony Atlas and his manager Valois and Frenchy bernard have spoken very highly of Andre's off the chart great pulling strength but none of them have spoken about his pushing strength. Frenchy bernard went up to the extent to say that maybe some weightlifter might have been able to pick up more above their heads but as far as picking something off the ground ,the closest thing to him would have to be a forklift. Billy Graham in his interview said clearly that Andre had a very strong pulling strength but didn't have that great pushing strength.
    In addition to that, his large hands and enormous grip meant that he would have been unbeatable in hercules hold or anything related to grip. His tall height meant that he would have been at the top in event like bag over the bar. His huge bodyweight meant he would have been very competitive at vehicle pulling events like truck, bus, plane, train pull etc . In nutshell he would have been very competitive in strongman apart from powerlifting. Even if Andre would have choosen the path of arm wrestling he would have been unbeatable and i think he was the only person at that time who had the potential to beat prime Cleve Dean due to his wrists and forearms size being even bigger than that of Dean. Off course i m talking about his younger and prime years, not of his later years where he was so much in pain that in princess bride he couldn't be able to lift the actress on his back, a rope was used to lift that actress up during one scene of that movie.

      Don't forget that good cardio is necessary for strongman as well and often the guys who win those events can't necessarily move the most amount of weight but are quicker and don't get fatigued so quickly. When I was a kid, Magnus Ver Magnusson dominated a lot of strongmen events and that was partly because he was quick a bit lighter than most of his opponents, although that's not to take away from his impressive strength.
      Andre had a lot more mass to move around than most strongmen and that's before he picked anything up.

      @nbaldwin45 Рік тому +1

      @@abhinavkumar547 He was a nice guy in his youth apparently but as he got older, the pain and constant attention seemed to get on his nerves more. Andre was very jealous of his position as 'The Giant' of wrestling and didn't tolerate any potential competition. He was a real bully to certain people in the ring, most notably Big John Studd. Bruce Prichard's mentioned that several times in his podcast but instead of condemning the Giant, he usually laughs it off and says 'Ah, that was Andre.' The situation with Studd also came up in the Andre documentary with several people laughing at how Andre bullied Studd. Admittedly Big John was partly to blame for constantly calling himself 'The Giant' and stepping over the top rope after Andre warned him not to but otherwise he was by all accounts a really nice guy who didn't deserve to be treated that way and who knew he couldn't hit Andre back without reprisal. It's sickening watching guys like Shane McMahon laugh at how Andre effectively ended Studd's career in the big time.
      King Kong Bundy said that Andre was dangerous not because of what he could do physically but because of his influence - he could end your career in wrestling with a simple phonecall.

In late 60s , he was in the range of 325-350 lbs and within 4-5 years went upto more than 400 lbs as mentioned by Summartino. At that time Andre was doing dropkicks and jumping from the top rope. His wrestling trainer and manager for most part of his initial career and the one who brought Andre into pro wrestling and taught him it's skill, Frank Valois recalls that "
      At that time many men were afraid to go in the ring with him, especially after he reached his twenties, because he was so large and strong. For all his height and weight , he could run and jump and do moves that made seasoned wrestlers fearful. Not so much fearful that he would hurt them with malice but that he might hurt them with exuberance. He was incroyable "

Claims are that he was 6’3” at 12 years old, if thats right do you really think he was only 6’9” in his prime? Perhaps the 7’1” that was on his passport was right, but I really doubt the claims he was under 7’.
