Stories of Regeneration: A New (Re)Generation - Ft. Carrie Richards

  • When Carrie Richards was growing up, she always had a feeling she'd end up taking over the ranch that her family had owned and operated since 1941. What she didn't expect was to do so in her 30s, with a husband and two kids in tow, and to radically change the way her family had managed their land for generations. Through research, trial and error, and a tireless multi-generational effort, Carrie has been able to implement regenerative farming methods that build back soil and revitalize the land. By stewarding the land regeneratively - focused on the full spectrum of health from soil to cattle to community - Carrie is bringing new life to the family ranch and illustrating the wonderful possibilities of regeneration.

Just a city-dwelling beef consumer here trying to learn about why I should support organic, grass-fed cattle and regenerative farming. I absolutely loved watching this video and am totally inspired to do my part by spending the extra $$ and voting with my pocket book to encourage this movement back to the way God intended us to care for the land. You go girl!!

The main reason is that the meat processors will sell you 0:00 Pink Slime instead of wholesome ground beef. Do an internet search on Pink Slime.

I've long believed that the best stockmen are women. I could be wrong about that but Carrie Richards helps persuade me that I'm not. Nice addition to the series.

Having been on the ranch a number of times, I can say it's absolutely thrilling to see the progress Richards Ranch has made (re)discovering a balanced approach that is allowing the land to heal itself from the inside out. The commitment the Carrie and Dan and extended family have made is an inspiration to all. I see three generations of family who's love and hard work pays dividends well beyond any paycheck. You are very fortunate to have such a special place to call home!

I love meat and I also want to see that the cows are treated well, and that the land is used in a sustainable way (where possible). Carrie Richards, thank you for the work you and your family are doing. This is the kind of thing we need in this world.

What a great story, thanks for sharing. It is always hard to have a difficult conversation with our elders who we grow up thinking they know every thing. Well done to your Dad who had the wisdom to let go of generations of farming and give you the reins. The Re-gen movement is exciting and soon will hit a tipping point. All thanks, to the early adopters and people with balls to buck a couple hundred years of new world farming . Great work (as hard as it is) Carrie and family.

I wouldn't say old farmers are set in there ways, they've spent years learning what works for their farm and what doesn't at least here in NZ, all the ones I know are very open to new ideas and tech but only adopt them if they work. I learnt the hard way when I took over the farm, coming out of agricultural college armed with all the latest ideas set about adopting the latest high producing grasses only to have them fail in the first drought , so no Dad wasn't set in his ways he'd just learnt what the farm could handle. All young people have to learn by their mistakes ( I made enough of them). I think it's better to evolve your farming systems as you go rather than jump to something completely new and unproven.

How exciting to see regenerative agriculture being practiced in California, just up the road a piece from me! More and more it's happening, and really this is the only real solution to the drought when you can improve the soil so much the carbon and water stay in it and nourish the life growing in it and on it. That's how I felt about our farms in Iowa that have been in our family for six generations. My mother, who is not a blood relation to the farms, has said I can't live on the property because it's a "working" farm. Well i'm in Idaho on a homestead now and will never live in Iowa. My Father is surely rolling in his grave. Bitter, you bet!

What a beautiful family and ranch, and two absolutely adorable children!
Congratulations on your decision to get into regenerative agriculture. Smart move! It’s really the way to go.
    Subscribed.
You may have seen this, but a very good series I watched, by Gabe Brown, on UA-cam, it’s titled: Treating the Farm as an Ecosystem with Gabe Brown, Part 1, The Five Tenets of Soil Health.
Gabe gets into the details of regenerative agriculture and also throws in some really really good humor! His story is amazing! I’ve watched his series twice and I’m not even a rancher or a farmer! 😂
For those ranchers AND farmers, who don’t think regenerative agriculture can be successful where they’re at, if Gabe Brown can do it in North Dakota, the state that has the record number of days below freezing, every year, it can be done in your ranch or farm. The key is to maximize profits, not yield. Gabe discusses this. Take notes.
