      Waiter: Do you know what you'd like this evening, sir?
      Anton Ego: Yes, I think I do. After reading a lot of overheated puffery about your new cook, you know what I'm craving? A little perspective. That's it. I'd like some fresh, clear, well seasoned perspective. Can you suggest a good wine to go with that?

      I think that's probably because he's an actual cookery enthusiast, had a programme where he investigated his Italian roots and dabbled (experimented) in the kitchen and made some really nice Italian style food. It was shown on CNN, then the BBC (I think) bought the rights to show it in the UK.
      That and the obvious fact that he's a really nice guy who doesn't really take himself too seriously.

    Sausage in father-in-law is easily explainable. Originally it is "sausage in dough", which is the Russian name for a hot-dog. The Russian language, as you may know, is flective unlike English which is analytic. Flective laguages have a thing called inclination. That is, the noun changes its form depending on how it is used (to which case it is inclined). In Russian there are 6 commonly recognized inclination cases: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Instrumental, and Prepositional. Also, Russian language has genders for nouns (just like German or French do). Nouns of different genders incline differently. When a noun like the Russian word "тесто" (neuter gender) is inclined to the Prepositional case (that is, used with a preposition "in"), it becomes "тесте", which is also the Prepositional case form of the word "тесть" (masculine gender) meaning (surprise!) ... "father in law". Thus when you feed a poorly written automatic translator like the old Google Translate with a phrase "сосиска в тесте" without additional context, it just incorrectly assumes the Nominative form of "тесте" to be "тесть" instead of "тесто", hence the poor father in law with a sausage in him.

  • @ramazkhatiashvili5440
    @ramazkhatiashvili5440 Рік тому +2

    I can explain the first one.
    What they mean by 'sausages in father-in-law' are sausage bread rolls, i.e. sausages wrapped in dough and baked in oven.
    Since they didn't know the English name for them, they opted for the direct translation from Russian.
    Now, in Russian they are simply called 'sausages in dough', but the problem is that in Russian the words 'dough' and 'father-in-law' are very alike.
    So, apparently the google translator confused those two words.
    That's basically the case.

    Sausage in the father-in-law...seriously?

    • @EvgeniyVasilyev
      @EvgeniyVasilyev 6 років тому +44

      It must be sausage in dough. In Russian dough sounds like testo and father-in-law - test'. Considering the features of the language in terms of cases and endings of words, it sounds similar to people who absolutely don't know English.

    Some of these aren't bad translations at all. The last one, that's exactly what the original Japanese says.

      @@ChouRaiyuki It looks like a cocktail menu. Long Island Iced Tea is obviously a cocktail, and an Incredible Hulk is a Long Island Iced Tea with something to make it green; sometimes something disgusting like creme de menthe.

    The sexual harassment thing is actually because salted pig feet (which is what the dish is) is slang for men's hands touching inappropriate places of other people

    1:39 “Variety of Opinions”
    Waiter: Do you know what you'd like this evening, sir?
    Anton Ego: Yes, I think I do. After reading a lot of overheated puffery about your new cook, you know what I'm craving? A little perspective. That's it. I'd like some fresh, clear, well seasoned perspective. Can you suggest a good wine to go with that?
    Waiter: What sir?
    Anton Ego: Perspective. Fresh out, I take it?

    3:20 not technically a translation fail because that is the literal translation of it. It is written in katakana, meaning that the characters are written as English words in Japanese, so the way it is said in Japanese is the same as English. That read “sui-to taito pussi”

    Teste in most slavic language's means dough, but tast means father in law so google translate mixed those two up.

    When you look at Stanley Tucci, you picture him as a sophisticated, very well respected, very well put and dignified person in real life... here, he loses it because of juvenile humor. Seeing him enjoy himself like this is just priceless.
