Fisk started 1981 like a House afire! He homered in almost every game for about 9 days .... it was amazing .... this clip is also noteworthy in that this was the start of Harry Caray's final season as White Sox broadcaster .... he was 'signed' by the Cubs in early 1982 (January, I think) ... and, actually, I think it was Jimmy Piersall's last year with the White Sox, also .... ironic that Eddie Einhorn had a lot to do with both mens' ousters ...

I was a huge Harry and Jimmy fan. Loved them as a team. Listening to them in SW Lower Michigan on the radio in the late 70’s was great: Harry was sauced a great deal of the time, and Jimmy always going on about “having his papers”...ie, he was ruled “sane” after a lot of mental issues. Jimmy was axed after criticizing Veeck’s wife publicly, and Harry left in disgust. Jimmy always called it as he saw it, which is why I loved him. Damn fine ballplayer in his day.

@@robertbruce8492 lol there was, famously, a night game, in 1981, during which Harry and Jimmy were hammered and were talking about players wives' .... did not help Jimmy's employment status ...

Not only was it Harry's last season with the Sox, this was the season the Sox moved from Channel 44 to WGN (and then they moved to another channel for 1982). Going into the season, I had wondered if WGN was going to flash "HOLY COW!" on the screen for Sox homers like they flashed "HEY HEY!:" for Cubs homers. Sure enough, they did.

They still are on team broadcasts, but you can't expect that when Fox, ESPN or another national outlet is broadcasting the game. Even when those guys do a good job of playing it down the middle, they're still accused of favoring "the other team". It just seems that way because we're not used to our announcers being neutral.

It *was* a big deal. Not even having a great catcher on your roster can make up for the woeful job the front office did at building a contender. They always came up short on pitching. Key injuries (Tony C, Jim Rice) were HUGE in '67 and '75, and may very well have been the difference in either or both of those World Series. Then there was the total choke job in '86. I don't really believe in curses, but the things that happened to that team were mind boggling.

@@ScottJ794 You misunderstood me. I meant it didn't do much for the White Sox. They never won anything of meaning with him. It was obviously damaging for the Red Sox. But Co-owner Haywood Sullivan had to get his kid in the lineup. His son was a catcher and didn't want Fisk in the way. Very damaging
