In his book "The man in the white suit" former Stig Ben Collins revealed that he was told every single bit of what the intentions of this race were, had been briefed about which routes they were going to take and what his role should be...
...And that role was "be as unpredictable as possible" don't be afraid to throw a spanner in the works. So everything you see Collins doing here:
- Jumping the gun at the start
- Not answering the phone
- Not using the escalator
- Picking up the newspaper
All of it was genuine, no briefing to the camera crew of "I'm about to do this" he just did it and the camera crew had a tough time keeping up with him but at the same time had a ball filming it.

Hammond deserved to win. The Stig took the most sensible form of transportation. Jeremy's use of the Thames as a sort of motorway was pretty clever. And James simply took the wrong mode of transportation for London. Honestly, you can crawl faster than you can drive in London when the traffic is really thick.
There should be another car driver, one who bypassed London altogether.
When I watched this on TV I was in awe of Hammond. You have to be a pretty damn fast cyclist and have a great deal of stamina to do that. So to all you commuters, buy a boat!

@@MercenaryPen Correct, the widow was sad to lose the sound of her husbands voice so they restored the origional announcements at the station nearest her home so she could come and hear him.

As someone from The Netherlands, I find London cyclists a brave species.
Cycling infrastructure in London has got a hell of a lot better in the past decade.

Being at Embankment and getting to City Airport on a bike before a boat travelling at 70mph in Wandsworth is ridiculously impressive from Hammond
Interestingly, the Honda 225 engine on his boat is the same sort of engine Jeremy uses on his amphibious Toyota pickup truck.

The camera man will always be the fastest
That's something I always wonder about in these episodes - what is the camera crew doing to keep up with them, especially when they're doing something difficult or impossible. What were they filming Jeremy's boat from? Similarly, the episode where they used trucks to rescue Hammond from a snowy mountain, or crossed the salt pan in cars (the first time that had ever been done), or went to the North Pole in a truck (another first), and so on. They emphasize how difficult it is, how specialized their equipment, and so on, yet the camera crew follows along with no difficulty somehow. How in the hell are they doing it?

Definitely my favourite Top Gear episode.
Learned a few words new to me from it: "rozzers", "cranky", and especially the "Chelsea tractor" :) which made it into my collection.
Here in Germany our great humorist "Loriot" had a few cartoons about "Der Familienpanzer Susi II" ("The family tank Susi II"), making fun of oversized, bulky, heavy cars. This was in his book "Loriots großer Ratgeber" ("Loriots great advisor") that was published in 1968 - way before the first SUVs appeared on European streets at all...
"Familienpanzer" might be one of the greatest German words I've ever seen

wow that sums it up for NYC Perfectly! when I lived in NYC for 25 yrs I would always Bicycle or take Public Transport! never drove my own car till I got my drivers License when I Moved to Upstate New York from the City

@@MoonatikYT where I currently you can take Public Transit which is Fare free if you don't have a Car but in truth I Drive rather than take Public Transit or Bike since drivers don't always attend to bikers on the road but that's just me but I should mention my Bicycle is a Specialized Globe Pro which has been discontinued and Specialized doesn't make anymore! Priced when New back in 2008 the Specialized Globe Pro was $1,300 USD and it came with 27 Speeds which was really an 9 Speed Bike which had 3 chain rings on the front and 9 cogs on the back! I still have the Specialized Globe Pro but its sitting in my Parents shed!

Unfortunately, my favorite part was not included in this video. It was the bit where Jeremy requested, and was granted, clearance to pass through the barrier at speed.
With regards to filming Jeremy, there's a separate camera boat, but shots within the boat itself are almost certainly small, fixed remote cameras (as often used in cars to show the driver from multiple angles without the complication of hiding the film crew from various shots).
Also I'm sure they do b roll shots so before of after the actual race they do the same route (or at least a few small bits of it) with a camera man there to get different shots. For instance they show shots looking out from his boat that are not obviously shot by a person holding a camera as they show different angles and movements. That's why there are so many different shots without the crew slowing everything down.
Jared Connell I also wonder if the camera crews are sent ahead beforehand, ie given a huge head start.
The stig talked aboubt this they sent a camera car with it and then afterwards depending either him or someone else would take the car and get B roll shots, this let them get all the good shots without messing too much with the whole race(though at least the first race the did was nowhere near as close as they which is part of why Jeremy was a bit drunk since he was waiting a while but that was more them learning what actual average speed of the road was like vs looking through the route and planing it, second was actually close, sure they have an ideal of the car will win if it can manage this average speed since this is the route and timetables of team public transport are taking
So yeah Ben aka the stig got to drive the veryon back the way they came so they could get the bigger camera shots is if you can’t tell if they are in the car or boat they literally might not have been near it when the shot was taken

Roman Guerin trust me london has even smaller and more congested streets than amsterdam. In amsterdam a car still has a chance, but public transport would win everything because of the tram services within amsterdam.

I knew Hammond would win as that speed limit at the beginning really slowed Jeremy down and I knew May and Stig would never beat Hammond because...well..May was in a car and Stig in public transportation in London. Anyone whose been to London knows just how much of a nightmare the congestion is there. I will never understand why anyone buys a car who lives in London, it takes forever to get through the constant congestion there.
And the city isn't all that large, so a bike makes a helluva lot more sense

I love how one of Hammond's guesses as to what vehicle Jeremy would be driving was a Harrier Jump Jet. It's a pretty neat jet capable of hovering and doing VTOL, it would be funny seeing Clarkson trying to get clearance to land at the airport, and knowing how these guys can drive most vehicles, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them could actually fly a Harrier ;v;

The best scene in that programme (which is cut from this clip) is when Jeremy does a drive by at speed past the barrage. That, combined with Preliator makes it look like something out of James Bond.

Depends on what train car you are on at some stops. There can be quite a gap in a few spots.

The Stig should be in more races and challenges! He's so funny.
I'm a student at a London university and used to regularly make a 13 mile trip across London. It took roughly the same time whether I used the underground, a bus or my car. All around 90 minutes.
Not to take it away from Hammond, but the other 3 had disadvantages.
• The airport is at the royal docks, not the river itself, so Clarkson had to drive past the airport for a few miles before going back into a lock to get into the docks and the airport
• The Stig would have been quicker if he got off the District line train at Westminster to get on a Jubilee line train to Canning Town, where he could have taken the DLR to the airport
• May was slowed down by the police stop, and by driving through Central London when it would have been quicker to just use the North Circular Road

Hammonds life was in danger many times during that trip. Overtaking betweeen vehicles is a recipe for disaster.
