My gosh, this video did not pan out the way I had originally planned. I was planning on getting way more shots of cool wildlife and I wanted to take more photo's as well, but mother nature had other plans! I'm still happy with the way this turned out. I had a lot of fun with putting this together and being creative and pivoting when the rain washed out my original plans. I also hope that this video gives you some support if you are also gearing up for a big life change such as quitting your job. I appreciate you watching and feel free to leave a comment. I read and reply to all the comments!

I always just suggest dropping down to part time work: it frees up much of your schedule while still bringing in _some_ income, avoids the resume gap and questions that come with, and if you’re miserable in a particular pt job, there’s time enough built into your schedule already to easily interview for other jobs without needing to take time off and I think many find that even the worst jobs are “doable” if you only have to do them part (of the) time. Having half of your work time given back to you in the form of free time to pursue other life interests is often enough of a change to take the burn out of _burn out._

Completely agree with this video. I took a life break in 2013. Quit a 6 figure job to move to Alaska. I wanted to explore that state more after visiting there to visit an old friend. I found a job there that I had done early in my career and paid my bills while living up there. I spent 3 years living my vacation surrounded by wonderful people and beautiful scenery. It changed my perspective on life. However life circumstances led me back home to a similar career as before but with a much better company. While making slightly less I'm in a better place mentally. People said I was nuts and doubted me for doing what I was doing at that time and moving north but i trusted my heart and mind. Sorry for the long story to add to your point. If you can simplify your life do it. Enjoy every day that you are given. They are finite. Keep posting my friend. You're doing good and I was happy to see you out with your film camera. It was the video with your dad and that camera that started me watching you. Cheers!

Hey Kevin, thank you for sharing your story! No need to apologize at all. I really enjoyed reading about your experience and I'm sure it's helpful to others to read as well. Even though I post these videos, at times I still find myself wondering if I'm making a mistake or not. And then stories like yours are really reassuring. Where in Alaska did you live? I've been to Anchorage a handful of times when i was working but it didn't really count as a visit I'd say, just overnight. If I were to visit Alaska for a longer period of time where would you recommend going?
I'm so glad you're here because of the camera! I'm a little nervous to see if this time the photo's will come out right. Also, because I haven't used this 135mm lens before. Took way too many photos of the ducks and then some geese as well. I'm finding myself gravitating towards photographing the "urban wildlife" we have in our neighborhood and in the park. Like in this video, that deer was not scared of me at all. Kinda cool, but also proof of how incredibly used these animals are to seeing us. I have about 10 exposures left that I'm planning to take on Friday (if it doesn't rain again hahaha) Planning to have a video on the new batch of photos next Thursday!

    • @kevinholton731

@LucindaLives I'd recommend visiting anywhere in Alaska just not on a cruise ship. You only see what they want you to see. Drive the road system at least. Homer. Valdez. Take the ferry from Whittier to Valdez to see the coast line. I could go on. The scenery is spectacular and the people incredible. I lived in South Anchorage. Close to the ocean and the mountains. For city living, the best place I could be.
Keep doing what you're doing. You have great content and are great at with these videos (cinematography etc) Its scary but life often is. Keep making content and pushing forward.
Oh and I've started shooting film this year with a Nikon FM. 35mm I picked up. 50mm lens. It's my way of simplifying from digital and getting back to basics with my photography.
Keep making content. We'll all keep watching and hopefully help grow your channel.

Thank you for the recommendations and the kind words! It's funny how you mention the cruise thing, since that's what I was initially thinking. But driving around seems definitely a better plan since like you said you get to pick where to go.

I would caution anyone against quitting a job in this market. Especially if you are the age category for ageism. I took a career break for 1.5 years due to poor health and mental health mostly due to my profession. I’m in my late forties and I have been looking for another job since late last year and it has been hard. Even temporary and contract work is harder to get now. The myth is that if you need to, you can just pivot to a job as a barista, retail, customer service easily and that is not true for most. Especially after they see your resume unless you are of retirement age. I don’t regret my time off but it cost me my savings and other things that I had to give up as a single woman. I don’t want to push fear either, but I just say unless you are in a situation where you have another income understand you may face difficulty getting back in. And unless its literally killing you like it was for me, keep your job at least for now. Forgive the length and lack of punctuation.😊

I’m only 28 and I’ve been burnt out from my good paying tech job after only 6 years since graduating. I’m in the process of relocating out of my home town to explore new things. I guess this will be my “adult gap year.” I saved up 6-months worth of living expenses so far and plan to take a break and figure out what I really want to do that is meaningful in my life (I’m a creative and artist at heart).
I’ve worked in restaurants as a cashier/hostess/server during my college days so I’m glad I have that experience in my resume if ever I need extra income and work a part-time job, but honestly, after working an exhausting, brain fogging 9-5 tech job, working part-time in a restaurant or even a coffee shop sounds more appealing. I want to be able to clock out and not think about work.

Even most of my family ditched me. The reality that older women have almost no monetary value in society has been difficult to accept. I spend my time hiking alone in the forest, praying and searching for a new way in life. Still nothing yet. This video was recommended so I thought I would give it a watch. Kudos to you for YOUR decision. The U.S. (I'm assuming you're in America), has a tendency to make its citizens feel bad if we are not multi-tasking with at least two jobs working 10 hours a day/6 days a week. I retired this past January (2024) at the age of 57 after giving 35 years to one company. Some people still say I retired to young. WHAT? WHY? What they don't know, is that I've invested 17% of my salary since I was 25 years old. LOL! I'm out here living my life. I don't listen to naysayers. All the best to you 🙂

I totally relate to this video! It’s wild what shows up on your feed sometimes. I quit my job about six months ago after building my career for over a decade. It was scary for sure. In my personal boat I’m not sure what is next for me, but that part of taking these adult gap years! And like you said, returning to the career one day or starting a new job/career one day is possible, if desired.
I ended up taking a part-time retail job to help make ends meet just recently, which was not part of the plan when I started but in the strangest ways it’s been one of the best parts of this time in my life. Yeah, the pay is so much lower and yeah I have no benefits but I actually enjoy it versus dreading my job everyday, burning out, or trying to climb a ladder I don’t have an interest in climbing.
While I’m still figuring this whole thing out, it’s comforting to know that other adults are doing the same.

I totally understand and admire your decision to walk away from your career. While I do get not everyone has the means to be able to quit a job to take a step back, if you do and you can why not do it?
Having all the money in the world means nothing when you are older if you can’t enjoy it due to health
issues caused by the job that got
you to all the money or God forbid you are not around any longer to enjoy it.
I had to leave the work force due to health reasons not caused by my job, but it certainly does bring a whole new perspective to the direction of my future. My husband and I worked towards a whole new goal of what we want for our future as individuals and as a married couple. It’s been eye opening, scary, depressing at times, but in a way sometimes a bit of push in a more positive attitude towards making time for things that make us happy. Happy now as individuals and as a couple and making goals that will continue to allow us to keep achieving those slower pace wins.
Life is just too much and if you can take a step back and be a superhero for yourself then go for it! There is no one more worthy of your support than yourself!!! Plus, if you hadn’t done what you do, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate your videos! 😊 Keep on being the superhero.

I've accomplished so much, so many unforgettable experiences. And the same for you! If you decided it's better to maybe pause or stop flying now, nobody can take away the times that you did fly. The effort that you did put in and that's what's important. Whatever you decided to do, you are not a loser!

At the end of 2023 I sold as much of my expensive items I had, threw some stuff in the bin, and gave the rest to charity and moved into my car. I worked as many hours as I could in my job each week and saved as much as possible, although I did eat takeout a fair bit and couldve done better budgeting my food expenses (I don't keep a fridge in my car cus it seems like too much money to buy one and have power to run it all the time. I bought a smaller powerbank and that keeps the essentials charged for a week, like phone headphones speaker). Overall, I saved more money in the past few months than I have in an entire year since moving out of home (Im 25) and paying rent which takes up about half to two thirds of your paycheck and throws it down the drain imo, when all you need it a secure place for your minimal amount of stuff like clothes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc, a place to sleep that's comfortable, and a way to get around which is exactly what a car does. I live in a small car and even that works for me. It's a 2002 rav 4 2 door with the back seats taken out and the passenger seat folded back and my bed on top of that. I stopped working recently to take some time to figure out what I want to do with my life, and to slow down and just breathe with no responsibilities (or atleast less of the burdening ones) and now I can afford to do that. Eventually I will get a job again just working a couple days a week so I can pay for my expenses without chewing through my savings. A quote I thought up is "I'm not living to work, I'm working to live".
I would say the lessons I learnt associated with car life is, prioritise having a decent bed (very important), finding private enough places or inconspicuous locations to sleep for the night only arriving late and leaving early to not draw any attention to yourself, and try not to stay in one place for more than a night or two in a row. Work as much as you're able to begin with to put away a safety net of cash for emergencies, and then slow down and work as much as you need to survive and if you can save a little as well on the side that's a blessing, and the big one, BUDGET your FOOD EXPENSES! That's where most of my money went because I can't cook big meals and store them, and don't be lazy when it comes to cooking if you can, make healthy meals as much as possible (cheat days aren't a reason to punish yourself though haha). Find some places to shower and use the bathroom, perhaps a gym membership.. I mean hey, you'll have the money to afford that once you eventually move into your car right. And try save a little, or make some money from selling expensive items you already have before moving into your car to get you off your feet.
It will be a big change, and kinda strange experience to begin with, probably more so depending on where you live, but for me it only took like the third night for it to just seem normal.
Bless your journey in life, and I have faith in you and trust that everything is working itself out for you in your favour, even if it doesn't appear that way rn, it always works itself out for the best. Life is good and things just keep getting better.
Ps thank you for listening to my long ass Ted talk, lol😂❤ much love🙏🏻

      @bobbylee3863 13 днів тому

I'm gonna reply to my own comment cus I thought of a couple extra things, lol.
So in regard to finding a place to sleep, if you have a friend or family member that will let you park in front of their place, that can a good thing, they might even be able to let you use their bathroom or store some food in their fridge as well, but try to be as self sufficient where possible.
In my own experience, I've worked long hours and many days a week for years and haven't felt like I've gotten anywhere with it, so for me taking the chance to not work for a little while is personal, and you don't need to do that, or even work less hours a week and only make enough to survive if you don't want. I mean, you could save quite a decent amount of money pretty quickly if you worked enough hours, if you're okay with that, and just living in your car gives you the opportunity to save more of it. Imo, there are only two ways to make more money. That's, find ways to make more money, or find ways to save more of the money that you're already making. So car life is for the latter.
I think that I'll probably find a job working a couple days a week and just earn enough to not go broke, and do that for a little while, and then perhaps at some point, I'll treat work like a roster throughout my year, so for example, part of the year I'll work more often and as much as possible to try to save as much as I can, and then for the rest of the year only work enough to get by, and put a little aside where I can. That way I am still saving more money in a year than I would have paying rent, but also having the time to do things I enjoy and live my life. At this point in my journey, I'm still figuring out what those things even are, and that's okay❤ I really enjoy walking in nature, and writing. (Side note, I found two amazing authors, Julia Cameron and her book, The Artists Way, and Jack Grapes, and his two books Method Writing, and Advanced Method Writing the art of tonal dynamics. If youre also interested in writing like I am😊)
Anyway, I'm more prioritising living my life, and focusing on where my time is going. I don't want to work so much, and if I slow down and take the time to think about what I want to do, and allow myself to not put pressure or a time limit on finding answers to these questions, I have faith that I will come across what I'm looking for. It will all work itself out.
I might even start my own small business on the side? Or perhaps I'll study something and get a certification in a career that sounds intriguing?
      I don't know yet, and that's okay❤
I'm just living each day as it comes.
Two quotes from my favourite movie of all time, The Shawshank Redemption ring true for me rn.
Which is when Andy is talking to Red after having spent 2 months in the hole, and he wants to live his dream that he has in his mind, of owning a small boat, and taking his guests out charter fishing, he says I don't think that's too much to ask for. Red is telling him that that life is down there, and we're in here, stuck in this prison. Then Andy says, right, that's just the way it is, I guess it comes down to a simple decision:
"Get busy living, or get busy dying"
and then later, Andy leaves behind a note for Red, which reads:
"Remember Red, HOPE, is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. I'll be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well. I'll be waiting for you, and I'll have the chessboard ready"
It's a beautiful story, and I love it so much, it's why its my favourite movie. The character Andy really resonates with me, and the relationships between the characters are beautiful.
I hold hope for myself, and to whoever reading this that may find it inspiring or helpful in anyway that everything is really going to be alright. I have faith in that. I hope you have a wonderful day, and that you find what it is that you're looking for. You're not alone.🍻❤️🙏🏻

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. While living out of a car isn't for everyone it's intriguing to hear how you did it. And for those that are wanting to try it this is a great explanation! I totally agree with prioritizing living life and spending time on the things that are important to you. It gets worrisome when your “break” affects your financial situation/life aged 60s, 70s 80s and up. If you don’t have a pension, savings, social security, 401k and more ….after full retirement age it won’t be fun. Your body and mind may not be capable of work 65+ 😢 And the $$$$$ you do have may not be enough for survival.

I've been on the verge of quitting for probably the last year or so but I keep finding excuses to put it off, the latest one being that I need to stay a couple more months to qualify for a bonus. I think(!) I will take the plunge after that, and it's not because I have any particular ambitions to do with traveling or side hustles. I just need a damn break, and I feel like a year off work (which is what I'll start with) is a better investment than, say, a car or a deposit for a house or whatever.

I have been thinking about going back to school and doing a masters part time while still having time to pursue some other options. She's ALIVE!!! Are You ok for me to Call You Your real name, or should I just call You "LUCINDA"...(sounds pretty weird to me to call You "LUCINDA" ...as I was used to call You "N.....")....seeing Your face today made me realise that I really like You! Are there particular reasons that are holding you back from making an income? What are the things that are in your control that you can change? Not that I expect you to answer these questions here. But you may be able to think about these things to yourself, write them down and figure out a game plan to at least start moving towards that change that you need.
