Classic Game Room reviews the SEGA GENESIS VECTREX CONTROLLER, a Sega Genesis controller modified to play on the GCE Vectrex arcade system! This hardware review features a modded Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) controller that fits into the Vectrex controller ports. Not an "official" product, this recycled controller has a bit shaved off the plug which allows it to fit the Vectrex, and the buttons have been configured to play Vectrex games. The start button on the Genesis controller has been made to work as a Vectrex button. This review of the Vectrex Sega Genesis controller shows this controller being used to play several Vectrex games including Berzerk, Scramble, Web Wars, Solar Quest and Hyper Chase. The d-pad does not have analog controls so gameplay with games like Hyperchase that require Vectrex analog control don't work well.
Well 10 years after Mark introduced me to the Vectrex, I finally have one and I'm looking this up for alternative controllers!

There's a new adapter box on eBay that allows you to use genesis controllers that are not modified.

My Genesis came with the red and black controller. The letters were red on black buttons, start button is grey D-pad had the red arrows.
That's the original from 1989. Later the all black buttons version happened for some reason.

I thought that Berzerk on Vectrex was the most awesome thing I'd ever seen. Now that I've seen a Mega Drive controller play Berzerk on Vectrex, my mind has officially been blown.

It always seems to find another name for the vectrex!
Has anyone adapted the newer controllers like the 6 button? You would have a couple unused buttons but if you had an adapter to change the pin order you wouldn't need to use start.
Ahhhhh, the memories of being 5 years old and slugging it out on MineStorm for hours on end! Lots of wasted time :)

That's what I love about the vector-based graphics - very smooth and crisp.
I saw a Vectrex in a retro gaming store a couple of weeks back. I didn't look at it too closely so I don't know how many controllers it had, or what the asking price was.

It still puzzles me why the Vectrex and Atari 5200 controllers were analogue? The arcade games of that time were digital as far as I know...however, I see why their driving game would be analogue.

if anyone's interested: there is a nice little shop on talbot street in dublin near talbot place that sells books and old games, there i foud a massive library of sega games for all or most of the sega consoles, loads of ps1 and ps2 games, a lot of retro nintendo games, an used gamecube, and even the Sega Genesis CD addon! all for reasonable prices! Note: all of the games (and books) are used, so if you live in dublin and are interested in these old games the store is a great place to check out!
True. But, at least those consoles were actually different from each other. They too had comparable graphics, but completely different games instead of the same games for each console (ex. COD on both PS3 and the 360). Well, I guess that kids my age will like what they want. Looks like there's no changing their minds. More Vectrex for us!
I've made quite a few of these. From sega arcade sticks to the standard 6 button joypad! They are much better (for certain games) than the original. But, if you want to play asteroids or star castle, the original with it's 4 button LRTF layout is the best.
you should try it with a 6 button controller. That might fix the start button issue. it might mat to one of the other buttons.
Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Colicovision, Vetrex, the Genesis controller does it all.

and then their is a lot of homebrew games too!
I'm no electrical expert but it seems to me that it should be possible to cobble together a very nice arcade stick for the Vectrex with analog stick included. I'm pretty sure that it's possible to buy analog arcade sticks anyway...

Exactly. I mean, there's nothing like inviting your friends over to play some super Mario bros. and duck hunt. Something, I wasn't able to do since i was born shortly before the ps2 (which I by the way love) came out. But, to slightly modify Genesis' slogan "Ya can't do this on an XBOX!"
There's something else that you should review. I found that a company called "retrousb" makes an Vectrex controller USB adapter, as well as all sorts of old-console-controller-to-USB adapters. Imagine playing your PC or PS3 with a Vectrex controller? :D
The enemies in Solar Quest look a lot like the ship you use in Asteroids.
I would say Solar Quest and Hyper Chase definitely need the Analog Joystick
@pspman2000 well... to be honest I don't quite remember but it's very easy to spot it has an ad hanging over the door covering about a foot of the door from the top... it's in the area between where lower gardiner street and talbot street cross and where talbot street and talbot place cross, try to look on google maps for some help... although there is no streetview of the area so you'll have to live with that.

@OrdoMallius Considering these are third party unofficial controllers that were made to cash in on the popularity of Sega Genesis back when it was new, there could be tons.
Now I'm just waiting for a MegaTrex (or for the US, GenTrex). I bet if Mark walked into a videogame store and saw that he'd mess his pants.

What could possibly be cooler than a Vectrex combined with a Sega Genesis? How about a Vectrex combined with a Sega Genesis combined with an Atari 7800? Now that's power.

HAHA! No problem. Yeah. I have a 360 but I play my other game consoles (SNES, NES, Genesis, etc.) more. It's sad to see that consoles today are being compared by marginally better graphics. I think we'll look back at this era of gaming and just shake our heads. lol

Port? I'm pretty sure it was originally made on the 2600 and ported to the other systems, which is why the 2600 version is so superior.

I just preordered my copy of Halo Reach for the Intellivision. At 894.886 kHz processor speed, 512 × 8-bit Graphics RAM, an impressive 16 colors!!! How can I go wrong with that version over the 360 version? lol.
I'm not going to flame you, because I understand. I wanted a Wii at some point too, and I did buy a 3DS, but old games are cheaper, and have more value. New games come out all the time, but we spend less money if we play what we've got. Plus, if you have a Wii, you should go and download a whole bunch of NES-N64 games and just play them with the gamer controller. It'll be fun, trust me.

I'm the maker of the modded Sega controller that CGR is reviewing. Just to be clear, it is not enough to simply trim the plug. A stock Genny controller will NOT work with the Vectrex. The entire board inside the modified controller is replaced with a custom board. Check out my channel for a video on how this works. You can use a regular Genesis controller on a 2600.

But can you use the vertex screen, as a peripheral to the psp, so it can connect to the gameboy color, which allows wireless access to an xbox, so you can use the Tony hawk skateboard, while playing counterstrike with a guitar hero guitar?

I used to play atari all the time with a genesis controller.
Now if this was the back code set up for modern games, they would have even more graphix....

Yeah geometric games do need to have a controller with a D-pad to be played, not an analogue stick, also why are there many 3d consoles wich dit come standard with a D-pad controller like the atari jaguar,sega saturn or sony playstation? That's pretty average.
Also some n64 games brutaly don 't support the d-pad like yoshi story,even the nds lacked a circle pad.
i saw a vectrex modified for use with the 3D glasses from the sega master system but im not sure if it would work

I know, it's so painful to see that at school. I've decided to stay outside the console war by not owning a Wii, Xbox360, or a PS3. Mind you I do play my friend's Nintendo Wii. I just never saw any use in the Xbox of PS3. Nothing to play on them in my favourite genre. :P

he didn't show all three plugs at once so we could compare them and see exactly what they changed with the plug so we could do it ourselves
