i found the tip about the party members to be kinda wonky... I got majorly sidetracked, only picking up enough for a full active party.. When i picked up a new one (finally), I just did what i do in pokemon games... Have it as a "cheerleader" with your strongest, and go high-ish level areas.. Caugth up in no time.

There's also a skill hakari can learn fonr a duel early on it let's him see 2 weaknesses and the hp
