    Thanks. Apart from the expected noise, it's very difficult to judge, just because you decided to record the DX7 louder :(

    Aside from the disparities in low-end and high-end, DX7 has that warm feeling you won't get from the Reface, but the Reface definitely has some pretty crunchy pads that the DX7 sort of smooths over. If I had the disposable income I'd totally invest in both and overdub them.

    Not a DX7 but a DX7mkII. Big difference. The DX7 can play 16 notes at the same time, and so can the DX7mkII, but it can also can layer two tones and play 8 notes at a time for a thicker, warmer sound. I wonder if that's what's going on here?
    I love the DX7mkII. One of my favorite synths ever.

      DX7 sound more "clicky" and dynamic than the DX7 MKII or the DX7 S. Also, the refaceDX looks to sound closer with the DX7 (?)

    The Reface clearly has less bottom end in this video. But more highs. Also the DX7 seems to be recorded louder. And there seems to be a small distortion on the louder dynamic sounds? I dont know if this happened in the recording process or is DX7 inherent. I think it would be good for objectivity to be careful about different levels. louder is always percieved better.

      hmm...yes the gain is lower on the reface, however, there are distinct differences in the harmonics. it's more evident in the sy the lead patches as opposed to the acoustic modeled ones. Also, the filter seems to be different between these lead patches...I didn't read the description., but I'm assuming this is factory preset comparisons. if so, the difference is quite pronounced.

  • @yamahamusicians

    I think many of you are missing the point. This is not supposed to be a replacement for a DX7 but an "accessible" FM synth in it's own right. For a start it's a 4 OP FM synth so a fairer comparison if you were to make one would be against a DX100 or DX11. It's incredibly easy to program sounds on the reface dx, unlike most FM synths and of course once Soundmondo goes live on Sept 1st there will be a whole world of sounds to share amongst users. Also don't knock those built in speakers. I was doubtful myself but they are actually very good. I have tried the dx with batteries also and it's a lot of fun to be able to go mobile with one of these things.
    As for the pricing, well yes that may be an issue. I have all four reface keyboards here at the moment and the dx is definitely the best value out of the four. It's the most versatile but is it worth the asking price? Not sure yet. It's certainly well built and has quite a weighty feel to it. I'm not a fan of mini keys but the keybeds in the reface series are at least good quality and don't feel in any way "toy like". Street price when they hit the stores here in the UK is £289. I'm thinking were that more like £189 I might be tempted.
    If you need any more info on any of the reface models just ask. I should have them here for another couple of weeks before they go back to Yamaha.

    • @Goth108
      @Goth108 8 років тому +1

      +yamahaforums the reason the Reface DX sounds worse than the DX7 isn't because of differently programmed sounds. It's simply because of lacking characteristics in every way. The DX7 has a character and soul of his own, while the Reface DX sounds as exciting as any other ever so average software synth. Very underwhelming. If I wanted the sound the Reface offers I'd just go back to using random plugins instead and get more exciting results from them.

    • @yamahamusicians
      @yamahamusicians 8 років тому +7

      +Goth108 Again you missed the point. The reface dx is an instrument in it's own right. It was never intended to compare with the DX7 so why keep making comparisons with it. The reface dx sounds exactly as it was meant to sound. All instruments are what you make of them. It's the musician that counts and if you can't make decent music on a reface then your not a musician.

    • @Goth108
      @Goth108 8 років тому +3

      yamahaforums so you're trying to say that the DX7 sounds more charming because it was meant to sound more charming? And the Reface DX sounds like a software plugin because it was meant to be without character? I don't think either is true, but whatever.

    DX7 has a warmer frequency almost rich analog sound, the Reface has cleaner more EQ'd tone. I love the DX7 because of the richness, but in modern music and production the Reface might be easier to record and produce sounds with minimal EQing. also I didn't really see him move the octaves on the Reface so I don't think it was given a fair chance to hear every sound side by side, although in some instances I did find that some sounds were better. personally I'm a fan on the DX7 for the rich 80's nostalgic sound.

    Nice comparison.
    I programmed the 4 operator TX81Z and the V50 extensively, and the Reface has two major advantages: a dual effects section, and selectable pitch envelope for the 4 operators. There's also a little MIDI phrase sequencer too. It lacks memory (32 patches, including the factory sounds), and it is expensive, but it is fun to program, and the sounds are extraordinary.

  • @shoesmoothie3533
    @shoesmoothie3533 7 років тому +8

    Both of these synths sound amazing and have a unique flavor that'll suite different people.
    What I didn't like about this comparison is the volume differences (The brain normally perceives louder as better). The dx7 was definitely a lot louder than the reface.

    • @umrasangus
      @umrasangus 6 років тому

      Shoe Smoothie you can change that by connecting the Reface to a Midi interface and using and amplifier plugin on a Daw program. In that way you can make it sound louder and even better you can use more plug-ins to adapt the sound of the Reface to what you want. The Reface never meant to be what the DX7 was, rather a more accesible FM Synth. For example, I like more small synths because I don't play live. If I want an FM Synth I wouldn't go for the "legendary and way better" DX7, I would go for a more accesible instrument. Also, I've found a great trick for those weird touch faders. You can use a Korg Nano Control (or something similar) and connect it with the Reface so you can use the faders of the Nano Control. There's a video about that. Anyways, I hope I could help you

    I bought one of the firsts DX7 when it came out and at these times a lot of people said it was a bad instrument compared to analog ones (well... I think a bit the same today!). Anyway, it became a "good old vintage" synth, I think it has its own interesting sound, and I still have one (first issue). You can say new technology can't be compared to ancient one, but talking about "copies" you can see some differences, and most of the time it's desapointing even if the recent technology is easier to use (but you can also edit an old DX with a computer). In this demo some sounds are not programmed (made) the same way on the Reface as on the original DX7, so it's hard to really compare.

    If the Reface DX were priced at $249 instead of $500, it would be totally worth it -- especially if you don't have any other FM synths in your rig. But at its current price, no way. I mean, for Yamaha to ask that much for each of the Reface models is almost preposterous.

    • @schepler2
      @schepler2 9 років тому +3

      Markus Arike How do I figure? I figure because Yamaha has had this technology available to it since the early '80s. The DX is a 4-operator FM synthesizer with minikeys and built-in speakers. It's essentially a Yamaha PSS-470 from 1987.

    Am I the only one who likes the reface DX? I think it sounds great. It does the aggressive thing better than the DX7 for sure, since you get 4 feedbacks instead of 1, but it does the mellow thing really very good indeed, and with only 4 ops instead of 6. The pitch stick is one of the best I've ever used and you've got to remember the DX7 cost $2 000 back in 1983. Adjusing for inflation that would be $4 800 in todays money. The DX7 has no effects unlike the reface with 2x7 effects. Built-in speakers and a smaller footprint means that you can take it literally anywhere and program sounds and come up with ideas on the fly. Take it to the picnic or the office, play during lunch breaks... And the Soundmondo web-midi means you get a nearly endless supply of new sounds, and you can share your own if you like. Need the mallet sound for Toto's africa? No prob. Michael Jackson bass? No prob. It doesn't have a mod wheel or expression pedal input, sure. But it DOES recieve modulation wheel and expression data over MIDI (CC# 1, 7, 11). The on-the-fly timbre change with feedback on ALL 4 operators (only 1 on the DX7) is UNIQUE to this instrument. Add to that the ability to change the level and frequency of the operators using the same method and you get some great controls over the sound for live performances. Try to see some of its STRENGTHS, not just the drawbacks. I really urge you all to try one out yourselves for at least an hour. It sounds really fresh, new and modern. The DX7 is a bit dark and stuck in the 80's, whereas the Reface does both eras good. But everybody is of course entitled to their own opinion. Also, have you ever heard the factory presets on the DX7? This is leagues upon leagues better, I think the reface is capable of a much wider sonic pallette than the dark/super-bright nasal quality of a lot of DX7 sounds. Also the instrument in this video is a DX7-IID which is Bi-Timbral. Not a fair comparison at all... That piano sound probably uses 12 operators.

    There is definitely some discrepancies in the recordingwith what @saftpackerl was saying, but I think the ease of programming on the Reface vs programming on the DX7 is also a big thing not being addressed here. This wasn't designed to "replace" the DX7 it's a totally different synth. Being able to sit and control the individual operators on the fly the Reface is really appealing. Granted there are ways of altering DX7 patches with an iPad and a bunch of crazy 3rd party software, but that adds a cost of an iPad to the mix. There is just a lot more tactility to the reface that makes it more "fun" and a lot less of an everest to climb in order to get your own sounds.

      There's definitely a learning curve with learning to program the DX7. But most of that is learning FM Synthesis itself. You don't need software to program the DX7, once you get the hang of it, the front panel is easier than any software out there.

    I'm also a fan of these mini-keyboards in general because I'm more interested in a number of MIDI controllers which provide more options for range, key-weight and features vs being locked-in to one style by the manufacturer - while still having something that's playable on the go vs a boutique module with no keys. Plus the DX and CS provide a nice range of digital and analog sounds for a nice low price-point, with massive space savings.

I'm a great fan of DX7, but I think the Reface DX is a good synth in its own right, having feedback on all operators and additional waveforms. It is much more modern, cleaner sounding and this is useful, too. It doesn't have the weight and as much acoustic, 3D character as DX7 does, though. Very helpful, thank you! The Reface is truly amazing being that it is 4 operator. The DX7's 6 operators do make a difference but I don't remember the 80s 4 op synths being like the Reface, particularly the Electric Piano!!!

    • @tonmaster189
      @tonmaster189 2 роки тому

      The thing is that 2 additional operator worked in layer way. This means that 4 operator could sound like 6 operator in similar algorithm with bit of resonance. Synths or OPN from 80s doesn't have resonance feature.

    • @RubyInferno
      @RubyInferno 2 роки тому

      The 4 operators on the Reface DX are all capable of feed-backing to themselves. Out of the 6 operators only one operator can feed-back to itself in the DX7, which means that the Reface is capable of a much more complex sound design. People only look at the specs and take them at face value, missing this critical detail.

    Unfair comparison, they’re both DXs but not the same. I love my Reface and concede to the gorgeous sounds of the DX7. But I love my user friendly and very mobile Reface. For the price I got it for it was very worth it.

    DX should be compared to dx100, not dx7. It is a fun keyboard in its own right, I messed with it in store and wouldn't mind having one, but at $500 it's too much for what you get.

  • @Irapotato
    @Irapotato 8 років тому +1

    Here's my solution, as someone who loves the DX-7. Buy an original one on craigslist, but torrent / buy FM8 and run a bunch of DX-7 Patches with your computer first. I have an MS-20 mini, which i like because it's 1) cheaper than an old ms-20 and 2) it sounds very similar if not idential to the original. I love the form and idea of the reface keyboards, and the looping / effects are great for musicians without a ton of gear / software, but you can get an original DX-7 with 2 more modulation points and a full size synth keyboard for about $300 easily on CL/ebay.

    What's the use of the lower body, the soul is not the same ? The components not evolved to the point of doing the same and with the same sound quality that was done before? Evolve to regress? The old Dx7 is the awesome yet, after 30 years!

    Tried it today and liked it vääääääry much, wonderfull to edit! Sounds cleaner than the dx100, less like a toy also. Even though i like the crunchy sound of dx100.. Have to buy this one. Anyone know if it's a lot of work installing a modwheel? Hehe : D feels like it would be...

    I think the sound of the DX7 is much more powerful for both Dynamics for the Sounds . Even the nuance of the sound is richer and more expressive , and I do not think it is due to the overall volume incision but just the quality of the sound generation as well as to the internal components of the audio outputs of the same .

    The sound of the reface is really fantastic. In the recording it has less volume and has a little less harmonics, I imagine by the lack of those two operators, I do not know, but with the effects it is much improved. With the reface dx you can edit the sound more easy even at real time with the dx7 is not possible. -The reface has include effects, dx7 no-. Are diferents keyboards style; portability and fun vs more voices and complete keyboard. I think that in this video the audio capture of the reface is not at the same level as the dx7. To be more exacts, It should have been compared to a four-operator fm synth not with the dx7.

  • @dennisristow2102
    @dennisristow2102 6 років тому +2

    I wouldn't compare it to a DX 7 as the 6 operators have more combos different capabilities. Compare it to a DX 9,21,27 or 100 with 4 operators and I think the Reface exceeds their sound palette by having feedback on each operator. Reface sounds like an FM synth and capable of some incredible sounds on it's own.
    The Reface only has 8 voice polyphony, and I wish it had at 16, but compared to the original Roland Boutiques with only 4 voices, it's better for full chords at least.

    The EP sounds better on the DX7, but the reface I’d much easier and fun to program. So, unless you’re into Whitney Houston covers, the reface is a better option. It can sound warm and analog if you program it to do so. As for the older DXs, my favorite is the 11.

    Lol sounds like most comments are hating for the sake of hating the new overpriced product. The comparison shows that the reface sounds clearer, punchier, more detailed and pronounced. The dx7 sounds looser, darker and lo-fi. I'd hesitate that one sounds better than the other objectively, just different.

    Argh why didnt I see this before! Just bought the Reface, couldn't resist(Katsunori from musictrack really sold me on it!), don't really regret it though the DX7 does have that thick rubbery sounding low end and the Reface attempts at the Classic sounds sound like attempts, perhaps the lack of operators ofcourse.
    I still think it's a cool little synth though with advantages of it's own in other ways, like being highly portable and possible keytar expansion? Price is a bit steep yeah but I just imagine to myself I lost 280 quidlol

    If you're not satisfied with the editability of the reface, maybe you should try the new Dtronics controller, DT-RDX. And if you're not satisfied with the sound of the reface, then head over to eBay and get an original DX or TX. I've got the DX200 and it sounds like a blast. And my TG77 is an ambient and tines beast for real.
