- This episode I visit Los Angeles and hit Meltdown Comics to pick up a book by Osamu Tezuka. My friend (and comic book editor) Jason sits in with me and we drink wine while reviewing the famous story The Greatest Robot on Earth.

We go on a LOT of digressions as we drink wine. That's just the way it is.
Jason's work - www.amazon.com...
Astro Boy, Japan's combined answer to both Superman and Mickey Mouse. People tend to call Goku from Dragonball as Japan's Superman because of their somewhat similar origin but considering Astro or Atom as he's called in Japan has more cultural importance in the manga genre and like Superman is a symbol of hope for a better future and that Tezuka was a big Superman fan, Astro fits the role better better in my opinion.
Yeah
Me alegra mucho saber que allá más personas que digan que Astro boy es el verdadero Superman de Japón.
oh my god Osamu Tezuka, the god of Manga, I can't believe he's not as well known in US amongst weebs/manga aficionados
It’s think it’s because of the lack of his series and studio gblili
ComicTropes? More like AlcoholicTropes ^^
Gay tropes?
I adore the impromptu drunk history episode.
JustMeJustMo Thanks. Decided to do that in editing after Jason told his story.
32:14 "Your face is hot, baby" that's how you know, you and yo Bro has been drinking too much😂🤣🤣!!!
I haven't started the episode yet, but I'd just like to speculate on whether Tezuka-sensei (I bet he would have made a great teacher in another life) took any inspiration from Carl Barks' work. He was an avowed fan of Disney, and some of his more fantastical science-fiction tales or excursions to exotic lands remind me of Uncle Scrooge's stories.
he definitely took inspiration from carl barks, his admiration is well documented.

I would guess he took even more (?) inspiration from floyd gottfredson, especially in his early work. In fact, that´s what brought me to tezuka! i am not particularly into manga, but when i got on a huuuge gottfredson kick and the similarities in the art got pointed out for me, i looked into astro boy for the first time. tcj has some nice articles on the subject:

Tezuka was awesome. He was a huge fan of animation as a kid and supposedly watched Bambi up to 80 times. Todays weebs don’t give him enough credit.
This sure is light on Astroboy content and heavy on drinking
Ah man. Rip Meltdown. What a heartbreaker
The sultan might look stereotypical but that’s because early manga/anime is inspired by western animation and comics and this influence has had a downstream effect into even modern manga though less pervasive. Also, the sultan is someone who was banished from his country making him a kind of ethical outlier to his middle eastern nation and not representative of his ethnicity or his nation’s morality.
I’m surprised people responded back to this old video
I'm about eleven minutes into the video, and lemme tell you right now. If they're not kissing by the end of it, I will be very displeased.
Chris we need more getting drunk with pals content. If this was like a monthly podcast where you and a friend get tipsy while joking about comics then I would die a happy man
Watching Chris get tanked is always hilarious lol
Going back and rewatching this since Pluto has just come out on Netflix, it would be cool if you and Jason got together more. This was a lot of fun.
These guys have great chemistry on screen.
Serves that guy right for driving a Prius 😅
Hey kids alcohol and junk food! Gigantor followed Astro Boy. I remember the Gigantor theme one of our local bands rocked Gigantor about '81. Put down the alchol (hic) and pick up a "musical instrument".
Time to visit Jason again!
tezuka was also help shotaro ishinomori(onodera in old days).
Osamu was a great creator.
Love Astro Boy so much I got my kids into it. Will look at some other stuff to.
Alcohol is funny. (Not always in a good way)
Surprised this despite this video being old I’v heard about this
Dat cultured sip.
That's just how we do.
30:20 All Sultan told him was to destroy the seven most powerful robots, not an order, so, if he has to come back later, hey, Pluto is the most powerful robot, who cares? He'll beat Astro Boy...
Boy, this review totally went off the rails....😐
Shit I completely missed this episode
This was hilarious
Parkour. ...mire like CARkour. Amiright?!
Chris, man... u r a funny bastard!
Such a good guy. So much self-discipline. Such a maniac hiding beneath.
But, mix intelligence with creativity and a little booze... u will have this.
Yer cooler than u even know.
Kudos, buddy. Kudos.
手塚治虫先生は日本の宝です!紹介してくれてありがとう!
You mean Kimba the white lion right because damn this video is kinda meh when looking back
Astro,s parents are both robots, not human & yes I agree that panel scene seems really strange. Love Astro Boy & robots ie. Terminators though that scene just exudes weirdness.
Isn,t Astro Boy,s robot family & immediate circle of friends, ie Elefun, they,re westerners living in Japan? Are they white or actually Japanese?
Nice !!! 🎧
"Butter Rebellion"?
In my family, that's what we call our fat cousin Scott.
I heard "Riddick" too.
What a intro!
has J Rod not heard of Ub Iwerks?
❤❤❤❤❤ tropes
I was watching Astro Boy on L.A. tv about 1959 - 1960 - obviously b and w tv. I wanted to be Astro Boy. Can you sing the lyrics to the theme song? Huh? Canya? You are on your way to diabetes, boys, so change your diets or lose the doctors. Go Vegan AstroBoy!
Parkour.
Hearing someone call Atom "Astro Boy" makes me wish I had wine to culturally sip.
Lol 😂
I hope nobody sued you for property damage.
Surely Hayao Miyazaki is the Walt Disney of anime?
swfcocs1 Yes. I’d say Tezuka is basically Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Shuster&Sigel and Bill Finger combined. He was that influential.
It’s osuma tezuka
@@watchforever1724 that's a fair point, it's impossible to choose one of them IMO
Worst. Episode. Ever. 😆
How ? Because not talking about tezuka that much for his other series the video is okay
I’m glad you said outdated instead of racist because whenever you say things like racist sexist you don’t really clarify what you define as racist sexist offensive etc
It frustrates me but it’s one of the reasons why i binge your videos instead of just enjoying them one at a time
Surprised how old this video is 4 years old
