Jimmy Dewar was one of the greatest voices and strongest bass lines ever. My Love, Lil Bit of Sympathy Robin is still alive and touring. Is the last collaboration was pretty damn amazing
Mr. Robin Trower is a true "Master of the Stratocaster", and he gives the best "Guitar Face" of anyone. And the music is amazing. Maybe do "Too Rolling Stoned" next.
I'm glad someone else knows this. My husband told me that fact 43 yrs ago, but I could never confirm it. THANKS for doing so. He passed away in '86. So glad you posted this 🙏👍🏻💥 This was his FAVORITE song 💘
Thats so cool...I'd heard it was the bridge from the Tower of London, where they'd hold prisoners for years then march them without warning straight to the gallows. Shows how a story can get twisted...I got the gist of it, just missed out on a few details. Thanks man...
This is one of those songs where I remember where I was and how it made me feel the minute I heard it. Robin’s guitar playing made you feel so much emotion 🔥🔥🔥
Great guitar player who flew under the radar like Alvin Lee, Rory Gallagher, Kim Simmonds, etc . There were many like this who were underappreciated while others got all the attention and accolades.
@@danconroy8293 Good pick...also, to me, one of the most talented (over a four decade career), yet unappreciated guitar virtuoso is BOC's Buck Dharma (Don Roeser), who is still kicking ass today.
I absolutely LOVE that you guys react to Trower. This whole album is KILLER, especially, on the funky "Day of the Eagle." I promise you won't regret it!
Robin Trower was the guitar player in Procol Harum. A couple really excellent songs by Robin Trower are "Too Rolling Stoned" and "Confessin' Midnight".
I was 17, it was Christmas time 74, had just been to my local Record store and bought this LP Went to the College bar wearing a full length Afghan Coat (I know you you guys don't know how they looked) inside out so the fur is on the outside and a Top hat with this Lp tucked under my arm! And this Stunning Blonde girl says Hi, Oh you like 'Robin Trower" Happy Christmas people!!!... Oh to be young again!!!...
I was so priveleged to have seen them do this live about 1977. Robin Trower was unequaled at the time, and James Dewar was the perfect vocalist and bassist to accompany Robin Trower. Such soulful blues and such great vocals and bass lines. Few power trios have performed to their level since.
Saw him play in 2014 at House of Blues, Chicago. Like fine wine, his guitar skills have aged very well into his 70's. In certain circles, and particularly so with those who've ever played rock guitar (garage to pro) back in that day, he was very much on-par with Hendrix, Feliciano, Roy Clark, et.al. I've listened to him for 50 years, starting when I was in jr high though a tube hi-fi in a friend's basement. His trademark watery, warble-y tone comes via a univibe pedal and fairly soft overdrive pedal thru a vacuum tube Marshall amp. Also, one of the truly nice guys in the business.
I’ve been going through a lot of these young guys reviewing “ old music” channels , and you guys have quickly become my favorite. As a 58 year old re exploring these great songs, you guys really seem to get it! Keep up the great work! As for Robin Trower, he was lead guitarist for Procol Harum for their first 5 albums. By far their most famous tune is Whiter Shade of Pale, which I believe is the most played radio song in UK history. They were a great British rock band, overshadowed by one hit song. They’re worth a deep dive!
Robin Trower is still playing today at 76. His bluesy space guitar still ringing ! The vocalist is the fantastic underrated James Dewar. You need to check out Long Misty Days and the Hendrix like Same Rain Falls
I saw RT many times. I took my son to see him at Cains ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I had 2 extra tickets with us on the 4th row front center. I sold the tickets to 2 kids bout 18yrs old. They had never heard of him. It was priceless watching their jaws drop the whole show. Robin is such a nice and humble man. My favorite guitarist. I recommend the ENTIRE Live album from 76. It changed my life.
Comment below this album needs to be listened in its entirety. Robin is the ex guitarist for Procul Harem and went solo in early 70's I started going to concerts in 74 and this was my 2nd concert ever and I was hooked. Saw him 5 times at Cobo Hall Detroit and he sold out every time Listen to the album bridge of sighs James Dewar shows what he's got and more a perfect voice for Robin. Wish he would do a Casino tour RIP James Dewar!!!
We care blessed to still have Robin with us. In his mid-70's he still tours and shares his mastery in song writing and playing. He was called the ''white Hendrix'' in his early solo beginnings and acknowledges Jimi's influence. However, as there is only one Jimi, there is only one Robin. Robert Fripp rates Robin as the greatest guitarist because ''with Robin, every note matters.'' My young son, now nearly 30, asked me one day whilst in Dad's car listening to his music ''how does he make the guitar cry Dad?'' His first three solo albums are classics; Twice Removed from Yesterday, Bridge Of Sighs and For Earth Below. From beautiful ballads like About To Begin and For Earth Below, raging rock anthems like Day Of The Eagle, Shame The Devil and soul/blues classics like Too Rolling Stoned, it don't get any better. Especially with one of the greatest rock voices EVER in James Dewar (RIP). Jimmy could sing anything and everything superbly. The rhythm section was fabulous too, James on bass and Reg Isidore and Billy Lordan on drums.
Another great selection guys! Trower is one of my all time favs! I celebrate his entire collection even the albums he’s released in the 2000s. He has consistently put out great music throughout his career! He’s one of the few artists who has been able to continually produce! I like his last 5 albums almost as much as his first 5 albums. He was in Procal Haram as well. Stick with guys - he’s really good!
I had pleasure of seeing R.T. twice; small club and smaller theatre. The song that really moved me was Daydream. For many days later I kept remembering how hearing/seeing that performed live made me feel.
You shouldn't listen to a live version until after the studio version. Very rare for a live version to be better than the studio version musically. And often it is different and subtle nuances are forsaken for the experience and the limitations of stage performance.
You are so right, studio takes are usually better than any live version. There are always exceptions but in this case, they should have listened to the album first.
I saw him at a bar in Minneapolis. The stage was about 6 feet from the corner of the bar where I was sitting. I've never seen anything like it before. He just kind of melted into his guitar. It was amazing.
Trower is a great one, underappreciated as time has passed. Has played with some of the hgreats and a big Hendrix devotee as can be heard here. His guitar tone is all about Jimi right here. He composed a song to Jimi called Song for a Dreamer while still with Procol Harum. Bridge of sighs is an album to go through entirely as it's one of those perfect blends! A classic.
Top 20 rock LP all time. Top 20 rock song all time. Yes, I’m including the Beatles, Stones, zeppelin, Cream, the Who, Van Morrison, Traffic, Neil Young, Springsteen . . . This LP and song are THAT good. There have been days where I rank these top 5 all time.
Robin Trower one of the great guitarist and my favourite track by him. I have loads of his albums. Jim Dewar's voice is perfect for the song. Tremendous band. Try doing 'Daydream ' next.
Robin Trower, saw him 3 different times, once in the 70's then in the 80's and last in the 90's and he sounded the same each time. The last time l saw him it was in a small place called "The Strand" at Hermosa Beach, it's a great place for a concert 👍
What a blues composition and an amazing performance. Bridge of Sighs is in Venice and connects the palace with the 'interrogation rooms' across the canal. So you can feel why it is the blues.
Robin Trower (from England) was on the guitar. James Dewar (from Scotland) was singing and playing bass. The Bridge of Sighs is a real place, in Venice Italy, where long ago prisoners crossed the bridge to a prison or execution.
Thanks for this reaction. Robin Trower is a fantastic guitarist but often overlooked. After Hendrix's death he carried on the sound only a stratocaster can make. Listen to any of the songs on the Robin Trower Live album. Some are more fast paced with even more virtuosity.
Trower's all about mood and emotion, wrings such beautiful sounds from his guitar. James Dewar was the singer, and he was really a great one, one of the great blues rock vocalists of the 70's. You should hear some of the studio recordings. Too Rolling Stoned is good starter. Rock Me Baby is best version of this old blues song I've ever heard. Little Bit of Sympathy is great song, Trower still closes his shows with it, 45ish years on.
Definitely one of the lesser known / underrated talents in rock & blues (James Dewar is amazing as well). He did a couple of albums with Cream bassist / vocalist Jack Bruce in the 80s that were Masterpieces.
Wow, we were doing mushrooms when we got this album, could not have been a better way to start the mellow mushroom buzz. That whole album is right there with this song, his very best album for sure, you should react to the whole album and Jimmie Dewar on bass and vocals is also a legend. Do the studio , way better sound and Too Rolling Stoned and enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶
I'm 62 and have had this album in one form or another since junior high school. An all time favorite. Not a weak song on it. Quite a rabbit hole with these guys.
"The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge in Venice, Italy. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment."- Wikipedia. When you realize the context, the slow mournful vocal and pace of the song along with the wind howling, it shakes you to your core. It's said the guards would let the prisoner linger at the barred window for a short time, this was the last time you would ever is the sky and city again. I had the pleasure of seeing Robin Trower twice, once with Procol Harum (he was a founding member as was Gary Brooker) in the Fillmore East, then his solo career in the Academy Of Music, both in NYC. His meeting and jamming with Hendrix changed his world. Critics often derided him as sounding like Jimi, his reply was you tell me I sound like the greatest guitarist, I'll take that as a complement, thank you very much (this is not verbatim but is the gist of the story as was either in The Melody Maker or Rolling Stone). They played this song that night. Though I saw many concerts in NYC in the late 60s/70s/80s, this was a standout in my memory. By the way Robin has many very upbeat songs, please continue checking him out. I suggest "The Day Of The Eagle".
Robin used to be the guitar player for Procol Harum. He was so impressed by Jimi Hendrix and so upset by his passing, he broke out on his own. But he has that Hendrix quality to his playing. And his bass player had a great voice.
This was the first song I heard of Trowers way back when. Great band very underrated and an acquired taste I think? But man I saw him at the Paramount Theatre on LI NY before I moved that’s about 7 years ago and Robin still rocking the place! He was great at 72! Great reaction!
In case no one else put this in a comment, Robin is the name of the band as well as the name of the amazing guitarist. James Dewar was the vocalist & bassist. Reg Isidore was the original drummer. He was replaced by Bill Lordan after two studio albums. Lordan had been with Sly & The Family Stone before that. Great band.
Robin Trower is amazing, and the Bridge of Sighs is still to this day one of the greatest rock albums ever. You need to do a deeper dive into this trio, you dismissed them way too easily. And Bill Dewars vocals are one of the things that made this Trio one of the Greatest. I appreciate seeing young people, especially young black men expand their musical horizons, but you missed it on this one. Get the album, put on your headphones and take the ride., you will see. I have had the pleasure of seeing all the great bands back in the day. I still listen to Robin Trowers works on the regular to this day.
Man yall play some killer tunes. All my faves. Yall should try Pat Travers singing Boom Boom Out Go the Lights. And Snortin Whiskey. Born under a bad sign. They play some hella good blues.
Bridge of sighs is the short path to the gallows in England where Trower is from. Many bands tried to rip off his music and style in the 80's (like Kingdomcome band) who were told cease & desist. that is how I found Robin Trower the only band I never got to see live tho he still tours; just not in Canada
I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Trower at a bar gig in Charlotte NC around 1990. PB Scotts I believe. He was in his late fifties, I guess, and he flat out jammed for about two hours. It was f'g incredible!😢
Ribin is the guitarist. He was in Procal Harem, but between their two best known songs. He joined after Whiter Shade of Pale and was solo before the live with orchestra version of Conquistador from 1972. He didn't play like this with them. Very Hendrix heavy sound here.
You need to listen to the whole album….it’s 🔥 ✌️
Truth! This album has cost me a small fortune in speeding tickets. Day of the eagle starts and I’m on a racing chariot with a spear lol !
DEFINITELY!!!! It's a JOURNEY from the first song to the last! I find it almost impossible to play only ONE song. LOVE Bridge of Sighs ALBUM❤❤🔥🔥🔥

BTW, the real Bridge of Sighs is in Venice, Italy, and was given that name because it was part of the path prisoners took before they were executed.

Robin Trower was lead guitarist in Procol Harum .
I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Trower at a bar gig in Charlotte NC around 1990. PB Scotts I believe. He was in his late fifties, I guess, and he flat out jammed for about two hours. It was f'g incredible!😢
Such a cool voice
This is still awesome! On my playlist!
Oh yes!!!
Goin deep. Trower was fire back in day
Procol Harum is a band from the 1960s, best known for the song "Whiter Shade of Pale". They are British.
Holy shit, been some serious minutes since I heard this. THANKS.
RT is THE man. 1st few albums are fire. And the rest are just as good. Man can play.
If you like his playing check out Pat Travers, Frank Marino or Unfair Malmstein
I had no idea it wasn't Robin Trower singing.
Ribin is the guitarist. He was in Procal Harem, but between their two best known songs. He joined after Whiter Shade of Pale and was solo before the live with orchestra version of Conquistador from 1972. He didn't play like this with them. Very Hendrix heavy sound here.
My first official concert - Rusty Allen from Sly & the Family Stone had just joined on bass allowing Dewar to concentrate on his vocals.
