I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this movie since 1987 but embarrassingly and inexplicably I’ve only recently become acutely aware of how powerfully well directed this scene actually is.

It's nice to see that from 1987 to 2008, a great villain is one that says "you got a little fight in you" to someone struggling.

I know, when I was a little older I started to realize he is a little too relaxed and confident knowing that RoboCop's coming to arrest him. I got my wife to watch this with me, and she said he has got to know how to shut him down. And when he started shutting down I told her technically you were right.

The moment when Murphy's faceplate is damaged and it zooms in to his very HUMAN eye, and the music swells and you know at that moment that there's a person under the armor... that's very powerful right there.

The cocky demeanor and dialogue brought by Ronnie Cox is absolutely perfect.

Despite Directive 4, Dick Jones forgot that Robocop can record his memory and his memory is admissible as evidence. I think Robocop suspected something was fishy about Directive 4, researched Dick Jones' psychological behavior, and played into it, hoping he'd spill the beans on himself.

In the scene that starts at 5:15, all those '"unnecessary" multiple layers of Titanium-laden armor they put on Robocop that they thought would never be needed because he would never face that type of firepower really saved his life. Imagine body armor so tough and heavy that it can withstand the firepower of an entire SWAT squadron for minutes on end.

Nowadays, it would be a documentary! Films like Total Recall, Alien, Aliens, they predicted the rise of powerful corporations. Like Amazon, Netflix, lots of games being online only. Back in the 1980s, at least there was some limit of effect on the average person's life. Sure they had a lot of power, but there were limits, laws, and regulations, to stop them being too powerful. Now they control virtually every aspect of your life. They know what you watch, play, read, eat etc. That's why all those classic 1980's sci fi films are so popular right now! Covid showed us the real state of the world!

    • @B-26354

Private corporations already control police departments.
I'm not saying that in an edgy way either but historically this has survived into the modern day.
Rail Road Police in the US have cross state jurisdiction but are employees of the rail company, full arrest powers.
Port Police are similar in that they're employees of the port company.

@@Felamine it's a shame the bible had to educate people anything related to political power; probably wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now. Wait are there stories told that are older tahn the Bible that portray political power or stories of kings "feeling threatened"? because if there are , i'd like to know.

Love the music at the beginning of the scene and as he's going up the elevator especially beginning at 0:46 and love Dick Jones Directive 4 theme at 1:36. So epic! I work at an office and for some reason sometimes when I walk in, I have the theme at 0:46 playing in my head! The soundtrack really is a work of art and elevates the whole movie!

ED-209 is just like a Star Wars Imperial Walker the if they're suppose to be All terrain it means to walk on every surface they step on. His only weakness the legs.

    • @combinecommando001

Walkers have the most obvious weak points which are the legs, but stairs are kind of meant for smaller ones. Anyhow walkers as a vehicle has a huge advantage and it's the fact it has a natural high ground by itself and it's all terrain.

That part when he falls to the floor and Louis approached him with the car and he extended his arm to protect himself is so powerful and it brings me tears because his human side is coming out and that expression of extending his arm to protect himself show how human and vulnerable he is at that point. He is dependant of another human being.

Put as many millions as you wish in CGI and digital effects in a modern movie, but only a very few will result in the same urgency, intensity and drama that both Paul Verhoeven and the mastery of Phil Tippet brought to this film. (kudos also to Craig Hayes for the ED-209)

"Hey wait a second, he's a cop for God's sake, Hitchcock you can't do this, we have orders to destroy it, oh shit, you maniacs, fire at Will!" Typical cops couldn't even follow simple fucking orders they all fired at Robocop aka Alex Murphy when Hitchcock specifically told them to fire at Will. In all fairness though, this was 26 years before After Earth and 29 years prior to the Oscars boycott and Fresh Prince of Bel Air was pretty good so I guess at that point no hard feeling for Will. Got to love Dick Jones, "Come in officer, you know I don't usually see anyone without an appointment but in your case I'll make an exception!" Bad ass!
