I’ve always loved that Lockhart’s greatest ambitions are to rid the world of evil and start his own line of haircare potions and Harry defeats Voldemort and part of his family’s wealth comes from a relative inventing the Sleakeasy’s Haircare Potion. So ironic 😂
Maybe that's why he is so dismissive of Harry's fame, he secretly knows if Harry stays on the path he's on he's going to get there way before Lockhart could ever dream of!!
The fact that Ron can see past Lockharts performance is even more proof that he is/should be the strategist of the trio. Please make a video about what if Ron is the strategist of the trio. It should be pretty obvious 😂❤
As for the Neville howler, he said "I ignored it, it was horrible". So I'm assuming that he got the letter in the great hall (probably first year for the 50 points), recongnized what it was, and was too scared to open it so he just hid it or something. Then later it exploded on him when he wasnt around many people.
"Harry, why do you always choose the blandest food??" I have two options for this: either Harry can't handle food that it's too rich after being starved, or the Dursleys are so bland that he's used to it. I remember a fanfiction that said "The most adventurous the dursley's got was meat and three veg" and I was like "yeah that makes sense" lol And about the mandrake leaf, also from a fanfic, I read that the marauders used a temporary sticking charm to keep the leaf stuck to their mouth as they ate. There's so many interesting theories you can find in fanfiction lol
I’m reminded of Dudley’s diet in the fourth book and how the second chapter opens with Harry going downstairs to a quarter of grapefruit for breakfast which he gladly eats of course because he’s not actually sticking to said diet
Porridge dosn't have to be bland. It depends on how you make it. If you add nuts, syrup/honey, cream, raisins, dryed fruits and such it can be really good. Also breakfest habits/preferences differe a lot between countrys.
Remember cleaning the black home and they came across the pikies in the wild? Indvidual pikies are pretty easy to catch. Just have the Cage of a trap do that eas to slip them in individually with letting the ones in out and lickheat could have done it
1:02:00 I always assumed that the spell Ron used to turn Scabbers yellow was indeed a real spell. But the fact that it didn’t work was foreshadowing to later when we find out he’s not really a real rat.
I’m not kidding when I say I have this podcast on repeat playing at all times when i’m home. I put it on when I’m cooking or playing games or whatnot and have listened to every episode so many times 😅
Same. When I don't have an audio book, this is like comfort food for the ears. I often go to sleep to these guys. "Get Sleepy" stories narrated by Thomas is my other one.
I never thought about that scene with Collin Creevy asking for an autograph in this context before, but I think you hit the nail on the head without realizing it. Yes, Harry is a nice enough individual that had it happened in the common room, he likely would have said "sure, no problem." That is exactly what Lockhart is there to prevent being normalized. You mentioned that Malfoy and Lockhart happening to overhear it is the worst possible timing, but that's what Dumbledore wanted. Even if fame wasn't going to Harry's head at that time, he would have done these things out of niceness, and then they would have become typical and more frequent, and Lockhart is there to put a stop to that before it even starts.
I thought it’s just the kids lack of awareness of the greater wizarding world because of their age. As they grow older their awareness of the larger world naturally grows
Speaking of Colin, I feel like films by not having him come back made his death in the books unintentionally more painful as in my mind he is forever the 11 year old Colin from the second film and that’s how in my mind he looks when he dies
@@cubedmelons876 his arc was mostly replaced by the character of Nigel, however the scene you’re referring to is with another character named Michael and twins are comforting after he had a detention with Umbridge as he says his hand is hurting (due to her quill)
I really like the delivery of "twelve years!" by Sirius because you can really see his level of exasperation, being like "you're telling me you can't see how this all fits??" It really speaks to Sirius' intelligence in a way that doesn't happen too often over the course of the books. Like, the main qualities Sirius is known for are his bravery and loyalty to the point that it's easy to forget he and James were also extremely talented, capable and intelligent men, and among the best wizards of their generation. I guess my point is that Sirius is such a good man that it often overshadows how much of a powerful, shrewd, and effective man he is.
Yes Eton (along with Harrow if you ever hear that name) is a VERY VERY prestigious famous boys boarding school in UK. Many Famous people went to Eton such as : Eddy Redmayne, Bear Grylls, Prince William & Harry, Ian Fleming, Hugh Laurie, UK prime ministers Boris Johnson & David Cameron.
Or Peter learned a long time ago to be nocturnal. It doesn’t make sense to me that he’d want to spend his waking hours with no freedom. They call him a lazy rat but he could just be sleepy from being up most of the night.
Love this podcast. In Neville's defense: Neville was using his father's wand for the first five years. It is not going to work as well for him. The Order of Merlin First Class: Awarded for 'acts of Outstanding bravery of distinction in magic'. The Order of Merlin Second Class: Awarded for 'achievement or endeavor beyond the ordinary'. The Order of Merlin Third class given to those who have 'made a contribution to our store of knowledge or entertainment.' Lockhart is entertaining. |
I dislike Neville fainting in Herbology so to make it make sense and not have him be a joke I tell myself he faints because the mandrake cries might sound a bit like someone being tortured so he doesn’t faint because of their magic but because he is reminded of his parents
My headcanon for the Pesky Pixie ‘spell’ is Lockhart heard someone say that while fending off pixies once but the person was using non-verbal magic to actually get rid of the pixies. Lockhart, since he’s not too bright, just assumed ‘Pesky Pixie Pester Not Me’ WAS the spell
Dumbledore: 10 points to Neville for standing up to your friends! Neville's Gran, via howler: NEVILLE HOW DARE YOU EVEN THREATEN TO FIGHT SOMEONE? DON'T YOU KNOW YOU'RE ALL I HAVE LEFT?!
The Howler possibly came because of loosing the Rememberal, he states in OTP that he losses it, it's never stated when nor do we get any confirmation that Neville actually gets it back after Harry catches it, it's implied yet never specifically stated. Plus Nevilles preceived lack of magical ability and insecurities I reckon stems from his Grans excessive emotional belittlement of him and comparing him to his Dad which would cause an issue and then he's in the same year as Harry so even more comparing likely occurrs.
I don't think Neville's gran would even get mad at him for fighting, though. She'd probably just join him. The howler was probably from the dragon incident.
In my head, thing with Hermione and Lockhart is that it started as a fan due to the books, then turn into a schoolgirl crush cause of looks. Which blinded her to everything bad about Lockhart. Add the fact that Hermione cant really admit to being wrong about anything, which Ron points out in book three I believe, also makes her continue to make excuses for Lockhart throughout the book.
Guys I have no idea how you actually waited a week for a chapter as kids.. I would have stolen into my fathers room and got the book to read ahead! 😂❤ love the pod yall
Just an FYI I think I may have accidentally “disliked” this comment while scrolling. Just in case you got a notification and were confused :) I undisliked when I noticed it. For the record I 100% agree! That would have been painful! Especially when we didn’t know the end at that point
I love hearing the American perspective as I pick up references and don't think twice about them. Eton is an all boy boarding school for the elite. It's where royalty and prime ministers tend to go. It's basically telling you that Justin is from a posh, upper class, wealthy family. I think it's an interesting contrast to Colin a few pages later whose father is a milkman, a very working class job. We have (or had) a more clear cut class system and JK is showing everyone at least from a muggle background is equal at Hogwarts.
1:08:17 except in book three, snape explicitly says that he saw lupin running towards the tree on the accidentally left open map after he went into the office to give him his potion. So your theory of the muraders not appearing on the map for non-muraders could work, but perhaps they are visible to others only if the map is OPENED by one of the four.
Yes of course the map is not all knowing. So how would it know that the person looking at it is not Lupin anymore but Snape. I'm sure Lupin was so exidet to see Peter he forgot to close the map.
I think your video idea of movie changes that had to confuse movie only fans is a great one! May I nominate how they portrayed Snape and Lily's relationship? That scene of Snape sobbing over Lily's body in the nursery had my step dad 100% CONVINCED that Snape was actually Harry's dad. When I thought about it I realized that they never really showed James and Lily together or Lily and Sev's falling out!
Lockhart's talk with Harry really demonstrates the extent to which he does indeed believe his own lies. The whole reason he posed with Harry at Flourish and Blotts was to make use of Harry's fame to get on the front page. Then by the time they meet again Gildoroy has convinced himself he was doing a favor to Harry and has mentally appointed himself as fame mentor and Harry as his apprentice celebrity. Aa role he naturally assumes Harry will be happy to take on.
Neville may have gotten a howler in the 1st year when he had detention for being out of bed with Harry and Hermione and ended up having to go do his punishment in the Forbidden Forest. The others were pretty preoccupied at the time, Ron stuck in the hospital with a dragon bite and everything, so they may well have missed his howler. Hell, its Neville, he may have gotten it and known what it was so grabbed it and tried to run as far away from people as he could and had it blow up on him when he was by himself. The thing about Eton, it is like the secondary school equivalent of getting into Harvard (or Tokyo U in Japan as portrayed in anime)... it is like the elite of elite finishing schools, with people like Prince William and Prince Harry and former Prime Ministers David Cameron and Boris Johnson having attended. So Justin Finch-Fletchley getting accepted means he is incredibly posh and likely rather intelligent. Also the thing with Colin Creevey made me think about how you always complain that Fred and George didn't know Dean Thomas... throughout the books Harry knows all of the boys in his year and only 3 of the girls in his year, but he knows very few people in other years, even amongst the Gyiffindors. In his first year Harry knows Percy, Fred, and George because they are Ron's brothers, Lee Jordan because he is the twins' best friend, Angelina Johnson, Alicia Spinnet, Katie Bell, and Oliver Wood from Quidditch, and nobody at all in the 6th or 7th years despite them all sharing the same house common room. Cormac McLaggen is apparently the same year as Katie, but they seem to be oblivious to him until he tries out for Keeper. In the 2nd year he knows Ginny because she is Ron's sister and meets Colin Creevey, the only other student from that year he ever talks about is Luna and he doesn't meet her for several more years. So it seems like it may be normal to only know the kids from your year, particularly those you share a dorm with or have classes with, and very little interaction with other years or other houses. Budgies (budgerigar) are what we in America refer to as parakeets. Which is technically a small parrot, since parrot is a large and diverse order of birds.
I think your greatest achievement, or at least the one that I like - despite all the success you've had as youtubers, not only have you stayed in roanoke (many creators just move out to LA) but you've used your platform to help elevate local roanoke businesses, like the coffee shop, or participating in local roanoke festival/event things. I think that's super amazing. I think you also source locally for some carlin bro mercantile items as well?
Uh no. Almost no creators move to LA. MOST move FROM LA to the midwest because when you can work anywhere, you have no reason to live in one of the most expensive places on earth. If they were moving to LA then they wouldn't be in those giant bedrooms they are in. They would be paying 10x as much to live in a tiny studio apartment. Where do you people get this stuff? I mean I get it. California is better than your states in every way so you're jealous. But even tho losers always fixate on winners, we don't even think about you and how sad your state is until you start trashing us. So the less you talk about it, the better it is for you.
"percy had a rat that peter then.... replaced" is such a dark thought lol like from the originals rats perspective it just makes me think of like a horror film where he starts seeing rat peter everywhere. one day rat peter has crawled into his cage and is sleeping there. the next day percy mistakes rat peter for the og rat. and then rat peter eventually gets the og rat and murders it. i think we've got a real short story on our hands and i think we should commission JKR to write it. i mean realistically i think if peter did replace the rat he probably just stole it and left it somewhere else, but like......
@LoaniReaWilliams the only in universe explanation I think of is that at that point the only other person that knew about him having the Elder Wand was Grindelwald (maybe Snape) and he wanted to keep it that way. An astute student (like Hermione) would have immediate bells going off, though it could still be written off as another way in which Dumbledore is that brilliant of a wizard.
Pretty sure they say in the movie that it wasn’t the mandrakes that made Neville faint - they imply that was just his reaction to seeing the mandrake, just out of shock or disgust or something. “Longbottom’s forgotten his earmuffs.” “No, mam. He’s just fainted.” Which honestly is even more insulting to Neville. And yeah, I always assumed second years start with baby mandrakes - before they’re potentially fatal - and then later in the year when they’re more complicated/dangerous maybe Sprout would normally have her NEWT class working with them or something.
Nevile didn’t faint due to the mandrakes, he just fainted at the sight of them. It had nothing to do with the mandrakes voices. Sprout says “longbottoms been neglecting his earmuffs” and then seamus says “No ma’am, he’s just fainted”
Was thinking the same thing. For getting caught out of bed with Harry and Hermione resulting in dentition in the forest and Gryffindor losing 150 points. It’s what makes the most sense.
hey! just noticed that up to this point in the story, we get to find the mandrakes that are DEADLY to HEAR, later we'll find the basilisk, something that's deadly to look at. Are there any others in this story that are fatally linked to the other senses? thanks for the videos!
A budgie, short for budgerigar, is usually known in the US as parakeets. Although parakeet is a misnomer, as parakeet means small parrot; so yes a budgie is a parakeet but so is any number of other small parrots
46:05 Hmm Ive never thought about this before but older cameras required longer exposure times. People were told to stand still otherwise the picture would be blurry. Maybe wizards can move around during the exposure time and the development potion helps it be moving images instead of blurry streaks.
In all the ways that lockhart is a fake, you guys are the real deal. He’s a fraudulent legend, but you guys are actual legends. This and the main channel is the greatest and most legendary channel in the entirety of youtube and THAT is your greatest achievement to date. You guys are the kings of youtube.
I'll give them royalty status but one Lockhart is too many. These guys seem humble so I'm joking, but I say we leave room for growth and they'll continue amazing us for decades to come... hopefully.
With a hyphenated name, being down for Eton, and knowing how to engage with people, I think the idea was that Justin Finch-Fletchley was part of the English aristocracy-- maybe even in line for a title-- in the muggle world.
In Britain double barreled names are quite common, hyphanated or not. It's typically when both families have a level of notoriety (or out of wedlock) but you don't need to be deserving of a title for it. The 11 year old voldemort actors name is fiennes tiffin, one side his father family (tiffin) and the other his mother (fiennes) but he's just an actor with no right to a title.
Neville probably got the howler after losing the points, after getting it he ignored it then it blew up somewhere else and we didn't hear about it. And probably would have blown up before the night that they went down to fluffy.
It makes perfect sense to me that Hermione wouldn't see through Lockhart's BS. As someone who values learning, she trusts and admires her professors (maybe not Snape/Trelawny) above everyone else. Not only that, but Lockhart is famous and lauded among wizard society as a whole AND he was personally vetted by Dumbledore, the greatest wizard to have ever lived in Hermione's mind (and also maybe actually..?). Hermione is really smart, but she's book smart and not necessarily streetwise and even being as smart as she is, she's still a 12 year old girl. Even if she was Lockhart doing some questionable things or making seemingly dumb mistakes, she might just assume that she just doesn't know or understand enough about the topic to see why Lockhart is doing whatever it is he's doing and just give him the benefit of the doubt. Literally everyone in her life is telling her to trust and believe this guy lol.
Sideways John here. Love the new show. Its like a crisp glass of ice tea. Of all of thr professors, do you think that sprout knows the secret of the whoming willow, ie the knot that immobilizes it. You would think that she wouldnt have as many injuries.
Good point. It's possible that not all whomping willow trees work the same way. And if Gilderoy flexes about finding multiple willows in "his" adventures then it's probably super rare and possibly the only WW that Sprout had worked with is this one. And the knot would've been kept a secret by Dumbledore to keep students out of the shrieking shack. But it's weird that he wouldn't have confidence in the Herbology professor.
I think she would have to know about it since she’s described as taking Lupin down the tunnel to transform when he and Sirius are talking to the trio in the third book. Perhaps she had already immobilized it and was in the process of bandaging it up when Lockhart showed up and decided to “help”
@@Boundwithflame23 your not dumb, I actually thought it myself when they talked about it but then remembered Pomfrey. But I have been up for a few hours 😂
My theory regarding the twins not seeing peter sleeping next to ron is that peter is out and about the castle just like the night harry saw Peter on the map. It must be pretty boring to stay in one place all the time. I'm sure he knows how to use the room of requirements as well since the maurders were pretty prolific in their exploration of the castle. The room might just be unplottable as well. Also, the twin wouldn't have reason to stare at ron's name every time they open the map. Final point, how does multiple stories work, does the name appear stacked on top of one another, or is each floor on a separate fold of the map? I was thinking maybe the tower of all the students sleeping was bunched together? you'd also have multiple people within one room, couldn't they have just mistaken peter as a classmate of ron's sleeping in the same dorm as him? It's not like they have a reason to ask or talk about their dorm mates.
This is one of my favorite chapters. In my free time, as a hobby, for past few years I have been trying to write my own fantasy book. One of the things this chapter does so well is making lockhart an entertaining real character. It sounds simple but trying to actually make a believable clown character is extremely difficult, at least for me. I think JK Rowling did a fantastic job with this chapter and this character.
In a school that can supply “school brooms,” it seems to me that, even if “the wand chooses the wizard,” the school ought to have some sort of back-up for a situation like Ron’s. I mean, wands ARE made of wood…and these ARE kids…and not all of them are rich…and stuff happens!
Wanting more from Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff is definitely something that inspired the rewrite project I've been working on. Been really loving the idea of Dumbledore having a helping hand in sending the howler
To answer why Ron didn't ask for a new wand, Rowling clearly has spent time very poor and J and Ben haven't. When you're a kid and you know your parents are poor you don't ask your parents for anything, especially if it's a replacement for something you broke.
Good point. I figured he wouldn't dare ask his poor parents for anything. I didn't consider it was because I share the perspective. I never asked for stuff cause the answer was either no, or a yelled no.
@@LoaniReaWilliams exactly, a perfect example is I took AP classes in high school not knowing the tests cost $75 each. So I never even told my parents... basically wasted my time in those classes because they didn't tell you when signing up.
Theory about ravenclaw not appearing in classes: they are picked for being more intelligent than the others so they have like “honors” or “AP” equivalent versions of classes
In the beginning of the video at 6:56 you discussing Lockart, and aptitude. My question is have you ever considered that he is so narcissistic that he honestly and truly believed that he was so wonderful and amazing that he was believing the lie he was telling Professor sprout just a thought I wanted to put out there to see, what you think and one other theory I would love to explore is the idea that Lockhart should have been a squib in this book we are introduced to Squibbs. It was the perfect set up for the reveal that Lockhart is. I think that head cannon definitely needs to be explored. Long message. I apologize I love all of your theories. Love your videos. Keep up the awesome work.
56:26 Not only did his grandfather create Sleekeazy's Hair Potion, but his ancestor Linfred of Stinchcombe invented Skele-go, which might also add onto Harry's fortune. 1:08:18 I don't think that's the case because Snape saw Lupin on the Map in Prisoner of Azkaban.
@@fionarodgers4806 but my point, that was a little unclear, was that Lupin opened the map and the map thought that Lupin was looking at it and that's why Snape saw them
we get further confirmation in later books that mandrakes are constantly grown. (or at least they constantly grow mandrakes after the chamber of secrets incident) because we see professor sprout in deathly hallows getting mandrakes to throw at death eaters during the battle of hogwarts
I am one of the people that first watched the movies without the intention to ever read books and I'm here to answer the question about the mirror from the end of this episode (from my perspective). Like everything else that's very important for the story but left out of the movies, it just left me confused. I like to think about the movies in depth (which is why I looove your channel and this podcast), and I was left confused by so much in the HP movies. I would compare it to how you might now feel about the FB movies with all the 'wtf, how did he do that, what even is that, why is this not explained,' and I wanted a better explanation than 'it's magic'. So basically, if you don't read the books, you are either left super confused or you just go with 'it's just magic' and move on with your life. In my personal experience, I couldn't appreciate the Wizarding World at all until I read the books and saw how many details that actually give the story its depth were left out of the movies.
My aunt is experiencing the books for the first time via the audiobooks. I think she’s still on book 1 but I got to tell her about stuff they left out of Goblet and HBP. One of the first questions she asked me was about the pronunciation of Voldemort’s name and I explained that it’s French and the t is meant to be silent. Incidentally I saw some of the audible reviews of Book 4’s audiobook saying that Jim Dale pronounces it wrong and I’m over here like “no…no that’s how it’s supposed to be pronounced. The movies got it wrong”
@@Boundwithflame23 I hope she rereads the books again, too! Because I made a pause: I watched the movies, then started looking up answers to all the questions I was left with, then I figured out most of those answers start with "well, in the books" so I decided to read the books, then while reading the books I thought they did well with the movies, but I thought that because I had already forgotten most of the confusion movies created for me (the movies only got the events shown but not the explanations), then when I finished reading the books and watched the movies again, that's when I actually saw how much the movies play down the entire story, there's just so much more to it. I understand that the movies couldn't fit all of it in, but I don't think people would mind 6-hour long movies. And rereading the books over and over just pushes you to think more. I hope you talk to your aunt about it like J and Ben do, it's one of the best things about immersing yourself in the HP world.
@@wkawksms_dd ye she’s only ever seen the movies because she doesn’t really read. So I’m excited for her to get to the later books. Winky; S.P.E.W; Ludo Bagman; Rita having more screen time than in the movie; more backstory memories of Riddle than just the orphanage and Slughorn’s; Kreacher’s Tale. There’s so much.
The one thing I think has to be true about Lockhart - he's got to actually be a great writer. Like, just beautiful prose. I think that explains both Hermione's infatuation despite the obvious AND his Order of Merlin, third class (which can be for those who've made a contribution to entertainment.) He's good at two things and two things only, memory charms and writing. That's my take 🤣
I really tried to read a chapter a week and follow you guys but I accidently finished the book then consequently finished prisoner. By accident of course
Oh please make a video about how the movies vs the books make no sense. I would love to see a compilation of things you should know but if you only watch the movies you would never know.
Ben: "I've wanted to make video of details that the movies leave out and how they impact those who haven't read the books-." Me: *Do it.* O_O I would watch that. O_O I would thoroughly enjoy something like that. Maybe it's a new series for the podcast or even just a new longer video series where you guys go through and compare the things per book and take your time exploring it! Another fun long term project maybe? I love watching the podcast and these longer videos give me time to relax and enjoy them at a slower pace compared to your incredible theory videos that are more fast paced and quicker! Love all your content but especially loving the podcast content!
In the movie doesn't professor sprout say something like "longbottom has neglected his earmuffs." So he isn't necessarily bad at the class, just took too long to put on the earmuffs
No, he says it in the fifth book when Hagrid shows the thestrals to the class. Though he doesn't say when his grandfather died, although if it's his father's father (so Augusta Longbottom's husband), it seems to have happened before he came to Hogwarts because he always only mentions his grandma he is living with, never his grandpa.
I have literally always figured that second years work with mandrakes and this wasn't some grand coincidence (other than the fact that our main focal characters are studying it right now). Like, just kinda seems like a standard thing they'd learn
I met a couple at a Halloween party once who were both dressed up in Harry Potter costumes and they had brought their baby and dressed it up as a mandrake. True fans. ❤
The Dumbledore’ Big Plan theory opens up the possibility for the best interpretations, like 18:35. So much extra juicy motivation and scheming behind the scenes can be extrapolated from one innocuous additional detail in the howler. Amazing.
The most hilarious thing about the fatal mandrakes is that Sprout & Neville are tossing them over the castle walls during the Battle of Hogwarts - so presumably, they are just mass killing death eaters, Hogwarts students, and Order members left and right. Talk about the nuclear option!!! Neville even says "Mandrakes! They're not going to like this!" or something to that effect.
Love the podcasts. A nice way to relax at the end of every week. Really helps me close of each week and have a goodnight rest for the week to come. Question: When will the "What if neville was the chosen one" storyline be completed? I truly am in love with it and can't wait to see how neville defeats Numble No Nose.
Love the podcast!! I have one question that burns me for a really long time. How, in a book 7, have Ron found where Bill and Fleur lives? And how could he navigate there Dobby, Harry and others when he wasnt the secret keeper? Is it that he can tell them the beach but only when Bill himself find them around, they can see the house? Or how it works? Also... since in book 7 we found out that Bill have made himself a keeper... It does make James looks like a fool, doesnt it?
I've listened to the entire first book or season and I have read the books ALOT but there were still things you guys pointed out that I never noticed and they make so much sense. I don't always agree with your comments but I love the podcast so far. On the subject of Harry always picking the blandest food on the table there might be a reason for that. Given how the dursleys have mistreated him and gone as far as to practically starve him at times, it's possible that those really rich foods are too much for him to handle sometimes or maybe he takes comfort out of the familiarity of something as simple as porridge over the more savory options like bacon and eggs.
The thieves downfall "washes away all enchantments" Not just disguises right? I've always assumed it was some goblins specific magic which is why wizards can't get past it
I don't think Molly asking about the platform number had anything to do with Harry. More likely she was just making sure the kids knew where to go. Like, a parent teaching their kid. A "Ok, what do we do before crossing the street? That's right we look both ways." type of deal.
Maybe it's a mom thing? I thought she might've done exactly that for little Jenny. The rest of the kids had already been, or were leaving for Hogworts. That could've been a way to include her.
My husband hasn't read the books, so there has been many times he will ask me questions because the movies have glossed over stuff. My explanations usually end with "... read the books"
Same. I read to my daughter & her dad went to the movies with us. He really enjoyed it, but couldn't understand when we walked out disappointed. Our daughter read the books to him & says he felt cheated 😅
I never read the books and only watched the movies of Harry Potter and loved them. I’ve been listening to the books for a few years now , the other day I tried to watch the movies and could not stand the movies. They cut so much out it feels like you’re jumping around in time while watching them
I get so excited to see the cover art pop up on my UA-cam timeline now lol. I haven’t seen the mandrakes since I was eight years old lol the last time I read the book.
As someone who watched the later movies (past Prisoner) before reading the books, yes Ben. The mirror confused the hell out of me! Until my mom, who had read all of the books, explained it to me.
I will say...

Then later it exploded on him when he wasnt around many people.
I thought the same thing! Especially considering that he cried himself to sleep later that night if I’m not mistaken.
@@sash_keys yeah! Poor Neville 🥲
Lol
That also explains why he doesn't ignore the Howler he gets for leaving behind the passwords in Prisoner. He learned from his mistake.
@coolnerdlll6053 oh yeah 😭 that poor boy I just wanna give him a hug
"Harry, why do you always choose the blandest food??"
I have two options for this: either Harry can't handle food that it's too rich after being starved, or the Dursleys are so bland that he's used to it. I remember a fanfiction that said "The most adventurous the dursley's got was meat and three veg" and I was like "yeah that makes sense" lol
And about the mandrake leaf, also from a fanfic, I read that the marauders used a temporary sticking charm to keep the leaf stuck to their mouth as they ate. There's so many interesting theories you can find in fanfiction lol
I’m reminded of Dudley’s diet in the fourth book and how the second chapter opens with Harry going downstairs to a quarter of grapefruit for breakfast which he gladly eats of course because he’s not actually sticking to said diet
The richness of food isn't dictated by the flavor, though. Anything can be made not bland if you season it properly.
Porridge dosn't have to be bland. It depends on how you make it. If you add nuts, syrup/honey, cream, raisins, dryed fruits and such it can be really good. Also breakfest habits/preferences differe a lot between countrys.
It's my head canon that the Gryffindors have Astronomy with the Ravenclaws, because that is the only class we literally never get to see.
I think we saw it in book 5, but I don't remember which house there was with them.
@mienfu9824 I know we got to see the Astronomy OWL but I assume the whole year was there for that.

Agreed, for that, I like your comment too!😊
What do you see through the griffin door😂
Here's the ultimate question for this chapter... who "freshly caught" the Cornish pixies? It certainly wasn't lockhart!
I love that Lockhart has to be the best at everything, even being a nobody.
Good one! 😂😂😂😂😂
Thoroughly enjoying this series. One of my favourite games you play is "is it British? Or is it magic?" 😂
Mine TOO! 😂
I’m not kidding when I say I have this podcast on repeat playing at all times when i’m home. I put it on when I’m cooking or playing games or whatnot and have listened to every episode so many times 😅
I listen several times a week too. I have read/listened to the book countless times…they are my GoTo listen to go to sleep 😊
This makes so much sense
But does Dumbledore wanting it to happen make it any less of a convenient convenience? (tautology, I know)
I thought it’s just the kids lack of awareness of the greater wizarding world because of their age. As they grow older their awareness of the larger world naturally grows
Speaking of Colin, I feel like films by not having him come back made his death in the books unintentionally more painful as in my mind he is forever the 11 year old Colin from the second film and that’s how in my mind he looks when he dies
Same😓
Didn't he appear in later movies? I remember one scene of him getting bullied in the OOTP movie and the Weasley twins comforting him.
@@cubedmelons876 He was replaced by Nigel, another Gryffindor student
@@cubedmelons876 his arc was mostly replaced by the character of Nigel, however the scene you’re referring to is with another character named Michael and twins are comforting after he had a detention with Umbridge as he says his hand is hurting (due to her quill)
Ah, ok. Been a while since I've seen the movies, so I must be getting everything mixed up. I didn't even remember a character named Nigel.
In defense of Hermione, to quote BoJack Horseman, “When you look at someone with rose-colored glasses, all the red flags look just like flags.”

Absolute shout out to kenneth branagh for his perfect portrayal. He might be my favourite casting in the whole film franchise.
Logical thought process right here.
Oh I so agree. I would get the books at midnight and have them read in a day, two at the most. Then I would sleep so I could reread them.
I actually really like that. It can't tell who's eyes are looking at it but it can tell who's voice is talking to it or something like that?
Yes of course the map is not all knowing. So how would it know that the person looking at it is not Lupin anymore but Snape. I'm sure Lupin was so exidet to see Peter he forgot to close the map.
I cannot even imagine how happy these two men were recording this one
All throughout book 1 I was excited to get to book 2 so that we could hear them gush about Lockhart 😂
Hearing the mention of a bell for the end of class just makes me think of snape saying “the bell doesn’t dismiss you I dismiss you”
I think your video idea of movie changes that had to confuse movie only fans is a great one!
Thanks for this. Me as a none native speaker wasn't sure whether they are the same or two different typs of small parrots.
"percy had a rat that peter then.... replaced"
is such a dark thought lol
like from the originals rats perspective it just makes me think of like a horror film where he starts seeing rat peter everywhere. one day rat peter has crawled into his cage and is sleeping there. the next day percy mistakes rat peter for the og rat. and then rat peter eventually gets the og rat and murders it. i think we've got a real short story on our hands and i think we should commission JKR to write it.
i mean realistically i think if peter did replace the rat he probably just stole it and left it somewhere else, but like......
That awkward moment when you realize Dumbledore had a wand that could have fixed Ron's wand, but didn't think to help the kid out.
Good one! He knew he could do it too because he probably fixed Hagrid's.
@@Tophadoodledoo I came to the same conclusion and commented similarly on someone else's inquiry.
Pretty sure they say in the movie that it wasn’t the mandrakes that made Neville faint - they imply that was just his reaction to seeing the mandrake, just out of shock or disgust or something. “Longbottom’s forgotten his earmuffs.” “No, mam. He’s just fainted.”
Which honestly is even more insulting to Neville.
Greatest accomplishment of the brothers... making a lilac sented candle... truly surprising.
Neville for sure gets his howler for detention in forbidden forest or for melting all his cauldrons)
NICE! I gotta check this one out 🤔
A budgie, short for budgerigar, is usually known in the US as parakeets.
Hmmm... 🤔
It took me a long time to realize this, but Nevell just fainted from nervous at seeing the Mandrakes.
@@Boundwithflame23wasn't it Madame Pomfrey that walked Lupin down there

I thought Neville got the howler for being caught out of bed in book one.
In a school that can supply “school brooms,” it seems to me that, even if “the wand chooses the wizard,” the school ought to have some sort of back-up for a situation like Ron’s. I mean, wands ARE made of wood…and these ARE kids…and not all of them are rich…and stuff happens!
And Dumbledore has a wand that can fix broken wands! 😂
But maybe he didn't because him having the elder wand was supposed to stay quiet. Fixing all sorts of wands could've gave it away.
BEN FOR PRESIDENT!! Also, your greatest achievement to date: brightening our lives✨
Wanting more from Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff is definitely something that inspired the rewrite project I've been working on.
Been really loving the idea of Dumbledore having a helping hand in sending the howler
I’ve been waiting for this chapter since the start of this channel. It’s pretty obviously the best intro to any character in potter world 😂
The reason he took so long to open the howler because he had to wait til he was alone to open it.
My idea of why Harry can see Peter on the map if only marauders can see marauders is that he has Marauder blood in him
Theory about ravenclaw not appearing in classes: they are picked for being more intelligent than the others so they have like “honors” or “AP” equivalent versions of classes
Hmmm... that's not a bad idea but wouldn't it defeat the purpose of everyone being equal; like muggle borns are with purebloods?
But Snape saw Lupin, after Lupin (a marauder) opened the map and left it open?
@@IdaSantti My point exactly.
@@fionarodgers4806 but my point, that was a little unclear, was that Lupin opened the map and the map thought that Lupin was looking at it and that's why Snape saw them
I probably watched PoA on ABCFamily a good 10 times before I understood the Shrieking Shack scene and realized who the Marauders were
we get further confirmation in later books that mandrakes are constantly grown.

In the movie doesn't professor sprout say something like "longbottom has neglected his earmuffs." So he isn't necessarily bad at the class, just took too long to put on the earmuffs
Neville witnessed his grandfather's death, he said it in the 5th book.

I just realized that Dumbledore can totally fix Ron's wand
He could. But he doesn't want this ability to be known.
Lockhart is half blood. Witch mother muggle father. He has 2 sisters and he was the only magical child which made him his mothers favourite
Really?! 🤔
@@LoaniReaWilliams yeah
Love the podcast!!
I have one question that burns me for a really long time.
How, in a book 7, have Ron found where Bill and Fleur lives? And how could he navigate there Dobby, Harry and others when he wasnt the secret keeper?
Is it that he can tell them the beach but only when Bill himself find them around, they can see the house?
Or how it works?
Also... since in book 7 we found out that Bill have made himself a keeper... It does make James looks like a fool, doesnt it?
Happy sunday guys! Thanks For this as always 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Sundays are my new favorite day of the week 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
I've listened to the entire first book or season and I have read the books ALOT but there were still things you guys pointed out that I never noticed and they make so much sense. I don't always agree with your comments but I love the podcast so far.
On the subject of Harry always picking the blandest food on the table there might be a reason for that. Given how the dursleys have mistreated him and gone as far as to practically starve him at times, it's possible that those really rich foods are too much for him to handle sometimes or maybe he takes comfort out of the familiarity of something as simple as porridge over the more savory options like bacon and eggs.
I think when they got the detention and lost points, a letter was also sent to Neville’s grandmother as part of the punishment.
This series is you're greatest accomplishment
The thieves downfall "washes away all enchantments" Not just disguises right? I've always assumed it was some goblins specific magic which is why wizards can't get past it
Seems like that would be the whole point of having non-wizards Run 100% of the banks
I'm looking forward to _everything_ you produce, Brett
I don't think Molly asking about the platform number had anything to do with Harry. More likely she was just making sure the kids knew where to go. Like, a parent teaching their kid. A "Ok, what do we do before crossing the street? That's right we look both ways." type of deal.
Maybe it's a mom thing? I thought she might've done exactly that for little Jenny. The rest of the kids had already been, or were leaving for Hogworts. That could've been a way to include her.
Love your videos!!! Great job. I just wanted to say that Eaton is where Prince William went. I guess our equivalent would be something like Choate.
1 or 2 Cornish Pixies would be no problem...
50 or 60 of them is a different matter.
I never read the books and only watched the movies of Harry Potter and loved them. I’ve been listening to the books for a few years now , the other day I tried to watch the movies and could not stand the movies. They cut so much out it feels like you’re jumping around in time while watching them
I was worried I’d fall behind on the series and not catch up, but… I’ve already read the books lol. Can just jump in whenever
Thank you for another video of this!
It IS a Mandrake leaf! You were so spot-on!
