      @tedberd - I learned about just some of the complexities of Ethiopia's many ethnic groups and the ethnic hatreds of certain ethnic groups from a fellow Registered Nurse (Orthodox Christian) & it reminded me of the Balkans. I see Abiy going to war with Eritrea to at least get the southern port because they pay though the nose to get goods in through Djibouti. It's survival. I'd like to see Ethiopia develop more but Eritrea is kneecapping any chance of that. I don't favor starting wars but Eritrea is in the way (3.8 million persons) vs 145 million. I think by sometime this coming year. Eritrea is holding it's own people down and hindering Ethiopia. Prosperity could help alleviate ethnic tensions to a safer level I would hope.

      @willjapheth8033 they had intervened initially. They were supporting TPLF advance to the capital. Not only that, when they overthrew the communist government of Mengistu Hailemariam, the US had supported the local militias as well. Otherwise there was no way that war would've been won. There’s no ethnic hatred in Ethiopia. To see this you have to backtrack the history of Ethiopia. Ethiopians target always was the regime. Mostly recently the regime created ethnic federalism to divide peoples unity against the regime. The new ethnic federalism give false hope that if a lead comes from such tribe it will empower that tribe but in reality that tribes life no different than any others. Prosperity party plays the same old tactics to stay in power, it has zero police’s or plan to change ethnic federalism. All it did was change former party names 4 or 5 times.

    Dear journalist,
    Abiy is widely regarded as one of the best leaders in Africa. It is important to acknowledge that many of the problems we see today have deep roots that extend back to previous administrations. Abiy has taken on the immense responsibility of addressing these long-standing issues and working towards their resolution. While it is unrealistic to expect him to solve all problems immediately, he is committed to shouldering the burden and making significant strides towards positive change.

    I’m from Ethiopia. And I’m one of the millions of my countrymen and women who strongly believe that, despite Ethiopia’s long existing inter-ethnic rivalries, the so-called peace laureate Abiy Ahmed is most to blame for the sorry state of affairs in which we are. Upon assuming office, Abiy made all sorts of promises to end the current ethnic-based polarizing federalism and usher in a new era of peace, equality and prosperity, raising everyone’s hopes. But he ended up being the most reckless and murderous ruler the nation has ever seen. Among the reasons why he turned out to be so are utter unfitness for the job and narrow political self-interests.

      Thats why politics should be a slow conservative process where you keep the things that work, and slowly fix the things that dont issue by issue. People who promise huge societal reform, like Joe Biden, tend to resort to forcing it if they dont get their way. Hence his reliance on a corrupt DOJ and media, and his fascist union with big tech, pharma, and the military industrial complex. Slow incremental reform allowing for adjustmments are what i look for in politicians. Things that work for a long time work for a reason.

    The biggest mistake was the US allowing the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to take power in Ethiopia in 1991 and establish an ethnic based apartheid constitution so they could divide and rule the country. As an ethnic minority, it worked perfectly for them for 27 years and made them an anchor of stability in the Horn of Africa and a great ally of the US government. What neither the TPLF nor the US expected was the chickens to come home to roost and for the whole thing to come crashing down. And here we are, with the most predictable outcome of ethnic based politics; state collapse.

    • @drewwendell
      @drewwendell 6 місяців тому +2

      It's worth pointing out that in 1991, ethnic tensions were driving multiple, bloody conflicts across Africa generally and the consensus was that colonial borders simply weren't going to work. It's understandable that the international opinion landed on "give everyone their own thing" - when the idea of "a nation" has failed to unify, the next step down is "a people." The multi-ethnic state was still somewhat novel when the post-WWII world order came to be, and, with the collapse of the USSR, much of the West saw the world through the lens of distinct peoples yearning for autonomy. This is not to say the US was acting entirely in good faith, only that there were non-cynical reasons to take the approach they did.

    The myth that the Amharas had been the domineering group leading Ethiopia/Abyssinia is clearly untrue because most of the leaders/kings/queens were either non-Amharas or of mixed background. There are, of course, reasons for making such a claim, one of the main ones being the need to have a target to blame i.e. the Amharas, as a pretext for creating 'ethnic apartheid', masqueraded by the phrase 'ethnically based federalism'. For instance, Emperor Haile Selassie is of Gurage, Amhara and Oromo heritage. Lij Iyassu, the King preceding Haile Selassie before he was overthrown by the same, was of Oromo and Amhara heritage. Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam was of Oromo and Amhara heritage, etc. All of them have had a cabinet consisting of various ethnic groups in the country. The current PM, Abiy, is of Oromo (on his father's side) and of Amhara (on his mother's side) heritage. Therefore, the myth is nothing but a myth.

      What's your point ? I keep reading your comment over and over hopping I might have missed something useful in your post, how is what you wrote conducive to the issues or the reality of the Ethiopian people that is being discussed ? How is a foreign diplomatic effort part of this conversation at all ?!!! Have you seen what's happening to the everyday people in the country?! Have you been following who is causing all this mess in the country between the people and the regions ?!!! How is your comment about foreign diplomatic effort going to save the children, old people, pregnant women, farmers, innocent students, those that are not even with any political agenda, being delited, eliminated, hacked, in-personed, ... ?!!! Please tell me ? Why would you write something like that ?! What are you trying to educate people that do not have any idea about the Ethiopian reality on the ground ? How can you not feel the pain and agony of these people ?

    Eritrea has always been an independent sovereign country for centuries. The Turkey Egypt Italy and the British have consequentially colonised Eritrea while Ethiopia was a free country that has not been colonised. Yet the UN decided on a federation agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia. But after a few years that treaty was obliterated by the Ethiopian emperor at that time and annexed Eritrea as an Ethiopian state. Ethiopia then started to colonise Eritrea by force.

      Eritrea is a artificial creation of Italian colonialism. Italy established colonial Eritrea in 1890 and this entity has never existed as a sovereign state before 1993. The highlands was part of Ethiopia's realm since Zagwe period.

    Those who oppose Ethiopia would view him as a threat, and therefore attempt to tarnish his character. However, he is a blessing to Ethiopia and has a strong passion for helping the underprivileged. It is impossible for someone like him, who works tirelessly day and night to make positive changes in the lives of the poor, to pose any form of danger.

      I disagree, he is always wrong when it comes to Eritrea. He called our land occupied territory. the Border Comission clearly said that Badme is part of Eritrea and that Ethiopia should leave. Abiy accepted this in 2018.
      Moreover he keeps spreading the narrative that Eritrea was just a normal part of Ethiopia, when Eritrea was occupied and colonized by Ethiopia. Ethiopia was always landlocked until they colonized us.
